Automobile Section PLAIN LEADING N VOL. XXVI—NO. 42 STATE ROAD IS NEARLY FINISHED Irvine Section May Open Sunday; West Street to Be Gravelled In preparation for the gravelling of Northern Orange County's roads, a new gravel pit shortly will be opened by County Engineer and Surveyor J. L. McBride at Stern's Station just east of Yorba Linda, where lease on 20 acres has been obtained. The Pacific Electric Railway company has started to put in a siding. The pit will be used when the Olive pit is exhausted, which will be within about six months, it is estimated. The long stretch of San Diego State highway between Tuatin and Irvine is scheduled to be finished tomorrow and the detour abolished. Ranchers who use West-st will be glad to learn that it will be gravelled, following the failure of grading, soaking and oiling to give a firm surface. This road has been one of the most obstinate that McBride's men have had to contend with. The work should start about Wednesday. The shoulders on the Anaheim-road are being gravelled as far as the Olive bridge over the Santa NO NEED USUALLY TO REPLACE LENSES Not one lens in a score has to be replaced, according to George Ennis of the Automotive Electric Company, which like the other shops has been rushed with adjustments and repairs to headlights. Most of the work is in adapting the candlepower to the lens. The most frequent defect in lenses is that of a clear instead of dimmed glass says Ennis. NEW MOTOR BOOSTS SALES OF FRANKLIN The increase of 260 per cent since spring in the business of the Franklin company is reflected in Anaheim as elsewhere, says Bob White of the Bob White Company, distributors of the Franklin and Nash. Bob has received orders for several new Franklins with the new air-cooled motor in Anaheim alone, and further orders are expected at Santa Ana during the Orange County Fair. A record-breaking spring was succeeded by a record-breaking summer, and the new motor now is boosting sales again. Visitors at the Fair were deeply interested in the new motor the smooth and quiet mechanism of which was a revelation to many. Vibration is reduced to the minimum by the use of Duralamin for the connecting rods, which cuts the weight of corresponding steel parts, 50 per cent. Vibration further is encountered by the double flywheel effect, the Sirocco fan being mounted at the front of the crankshaft. The crankshaft itself is much shorter and of larger diameter than before and mounted on seven bearings. PAIR OF GOOD Add up the seper fenders, lamps, windshield, and bumper with its particular price. The work was found necessary to prepare for the river's possible overflow. One 55-foot span of the Talbert road bridge has been raised five feet and another two and one half feet so far. Beginning Wednesday Orange-thorpe-ave cast of Placentia-ave will be oiled for three quarters of a mile. The work will require only two or three days. Two months will be required to finish East Chapman-ave, Orange, the improvement on which was started Monday. There is three quarters of a mile of it, all the way to the city limits. Starting Monday, Tustin-ave from Fourth to Seventh-st in the fifth road district will be improved. Wells & Bressler were awarded the contract. Goodrum Prop ANAHEIM FULLERTON Buick Distributors for Northern Orange County MAIN DEAL LEADING NEWSPAPER OF NORTHERN ORANGE COUNTY Anaheim, California, Saturday, Sept. 30, 1922 PAIR OF BUMPERS GOOD INSURANCE Add up the separate values of your fenders, lamps, radiator and perhaps windshield, and compare the total with that of a bumper or pair of bumpers. Is there any cheaper insurance than bumpers? Nenno & Bock, proprietors of the big-accessories shop on South Los Angeles street, believe that the Lyon bumper with its wonderful resiliency is particularly practical. Resiliency is that characteristic which causes an object to "spring back" or "rebound" after impact. Ordinary steel has little resiliency. The special alloy steel made later our own analysis, exclusively for the manufacture of Lyon spring bumpers, is subjected to a series of special oil tempering processes in our own factory. This original and exclusive method of manufacture, together with the patented open "loop-end" construction, insures the greatest amount of resiliency possible. A standard Lyon bumper has been deflected eight inches under a strain of 2200 pounds—equal to the most severe bump of a car in action. That Lyon spring bumpers are a necessity is proven by the fact that insurance companies grant substantial reductions in collision rates for Lyon-equipped cars. These reductions more than pay for Lyon spring bumpers. Fenders, jams and gasoline tanks make poor bumpers, and costly ones at that. Many a slight collision results in a battered fender or a damaged lamp—the cost of replacement of which would greatly exceed the price of Lyon spring bumpers. Protect Gravelled Roads About City With an extensive program of dirt road repair already launched, particularly in Northern Orange County, it is time to raise the question whether these roads should not be protected as thoroughly as the asphalt or concrete boulevards. Some of the gravel roads southwest of the city, improved only a few months ago, already are broken and full of chuckholes in places. If this continues, the program of the county engineer will be badly undermined. Good dirt roads are worth protecting. WINTER TRAVEL TO STATE HEAVY LIKELY Erroneous reports to the effect that winter travel to California is beset with hardships almost unbelievable will be combatted in a widespread campaign to be launched by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Preparations for winter touring to California are being hastened in the east at this time it is reported by the club's touring bureau, and approximately 8300 letters of inquiry have been received from the east this year asking if it is true that the transcontinental roads are impassible in the winter. During the winter a motorist may tour from the Atlantic sea-board to OBSERVE RESTRICTED LIGHT ZONE, URGED The most A. Bevillard has charged anybody for headlight adjustment so far, he says, was $7.45 and that included new lenses, repairs, etc. The average on 850 machines, tested up to noon Thursday, was $1.25, including adjustment, for which the maximum fee is 75 cents. Globes too large for the light, oversize globe in many cases, have been the commonest mistake, says Bevillard. The local distributor says that the headlight adjustment "craze" started two years ago, but lasted then only about 30 days. Then the whole question of what's what was turned over to the University of California to settle. The university's engineering department fixed rules so that the driver of the car carrying the offending lights should be protected and not only the other fellow. The present state law dates from 1919, but amendments were made, effective as late as January 1 of this year. Beyillard says most of the defects he has noticed have been that the restricted zone—100 feet ahead, seven feet to the left and five feet above the pavement has not been observed. If the light is not in the correct zone it does the motorist no good and blinds the approaching driver. 1923 BUICK TOURING HAS MANY NOVELTIES Just to let you know what the new STUDEBAKER STILL IN BRISK DEMAND When Harry D. K. Just to show what a Maxwell will do, Sales Manager C. A. Doyle of the Union Motors, Los Angeles, Maxwell distributors, drove two cars 18 or 20 miles an hour, then suddenly put them into reverse and repeated the process again and again. The cars weren't wrecked, as the crowd expected. The high gear followed by reverse without the use of the clutch did not apparent harm what ever. Turton & Lumisdon, local distributors, regard the test as significant, in a practical way, because a new owner, especially, who may not have completely mastered the operation of his car, might do just a thing, while even an experienced driver in an accident might do something similar. DODGE CHOSEN BY OFFICIALS OF L. A. The Los Angeles police department's purchase of 54 Dodge cars is proof enough, in Charley Mann's opinion, of the value of the Dodge, when speed, endurance and readiness to perform are desired. These Dodge cars will be used for several different purposes. As police ambulances, for one thing, because they are speedy and dependable. For the bootleg squad, for another, Stills come in many sizes, big and little, and often it is necessary to dismantle one of them and take the parts to police headquarters. Then the plain-clothes men must have cars, cars of as good service as possible with safety. They travel everywhere in the city and are never idle. Finally the traffic bureau, in enforcing the city ordinances must have cars that will perform. Beyillard says most of the defects he has noticed have been that the restricted zone—100 feet ahead, seven feet to the left and five feet above the pavement has not been observed. If the light is not in the correct zone it does the motorist no good and blinds the approaching driver. 1923 BUICK TOURING HAS MANY NOVELTIES Just to let you know what the new 1923 Buick touring car is. Its qualities of appearance, riding ease and power are more outstanding than ever. The long graceful lines have been accentuated by lowering the body height appreciably and by the new full crown fenders, drum type head and cowl lamps. The posture of the seven seats is ideal for comfort and the top has an exclusive tailored design with a distinctive type of windshield visor to match its trimness. There is a rear vision mirror a completely new instrument board, cowl ventilator and transmission lock. The Buick cantilever spring has been given an entirely new suspension which absorbs road roughness and does away entirely with the need of rear snubbers or shock absorbers. The famous Buick valve-in-head motor, velvet Buick clutch and body construction—all show the care taken to make this car the master of the road. DELIVERY BOYS RECKLESS DRIVERS? Pink-cheeked delivery boys and drivers of commercial vehicles in southern and central California cities are calling down upon themselves a storm of criticism from motorists for careless driving, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. It is stated by Auto club authorities, there is a movement now on foot to secure control of these reckless youths by wide-wide action of some sort. In safe localities it is believed that the area limit of the driver of a delivery wagon should be at least 21 years of age before he secures a driving license. Many motorists complain to the club that the drivers of delivery wagons fail to obey the speed laws, often cut-in front of passenger vehicles with reckless abandon and cut corners without giving a signal, which is a double offense. In Los Angeles the question has been presented to the City Council by the Board of Public Utilities. Appleby, Anaheim and Santa Ana distributor, this week. October 12 will be celebrated in Oakland as Durant Day when Mayor John L. Davie will declare an official holiday. Civic and public leaders will joint with every Durant dealer in California in celebrating the arrival of W. C. Durant in Oakland, the master builder of automobiles. Starting with a big motor car parade in the morning and including an inspection of the new $3,000,000 plant of the Durant Motor company of California, to be followed by a banquet it is estimated that thousands of out-of-town visitors will attend the celebration in honor of the world's leading automobile manufacturer. Every Durant dealer in the state will come to Oakland in a Durant car and participate in the great motor car parade in which 1000 Durant cars will be in line. The Oakland Chamber of Commerce, Lyons Club, Rotary Club and heads of other automotive concerns will co-operate with the Durant officials in making Durant day one that will long be remembered by the out-of-town visitors. It was W. C. Durant who erected the first automobile factory in Oakland in 1915, when he built the Chevrolet plant, and it was the same W. C. Durant who insisted that Oakland be the home of the great Durant.
