DATE CHANGED FOR CHAMP ELKS' GAME
BECAUSE of a change in the schedule of the annual convention of Calif. Elks at Santa Monica, the championship ball game, in which Anaheim baligamers expect to play a prominent part, will be played Thursday, Oct. 12, instead of Friday, Oct. 13.
Not that anyone is superstituous but many will breathe easier as Friday, the 13th, would have been unlucky for somebody. Thursday afternoon would be a better time for Anaheim stores to close to permit employe join other rooters at the big game.
Manager Billy Knott announced today that Jack Pendleton, suffering from an injured knee as result of an auto wreck last week, will not be able to get into the game with the fast Shell Oil Co. team at Signal Hill Sunday. In his place will be Coffman who has been warming the bench faithfully throughout the season and who has demonstrated he has a mighty keen batting eye each time he got a chance at the plate. Managen Knott hopes that Pendleton will be recovered sufficiently by a week from Sunday to get into the practice game with the winner of the San Pedro and Sawtelle three game series.
Dunn is much improved from an attack of sunstroke and will play Sunday.
Manager Knott said today that fans who expect to accompany the team Sunday should bear in mind that the game will be played on Signal Hill and not on Long Beach Elks field.
CLEVER BOXERS TO MIX FRIDAY NIGHT
Jack Iman, big Santa Ana scrapper, and Tom Kelly, clever two-fisted boxer from Los Angeles, who mix in the feature event at the Athletic Clubs weekly boxing bill tomorrow night, both report themselves in tip top shape. Iman has put in a busy week conditioning himself and will have no excuses to offer if Kelly again beats him. Jack looks better and his boxing has been of the old time form.
Kelly sends down word that he is not worrying in the least; against their heavy.
FAST LONG BEACH TEAMS WILL PLAY ANAHEIM SATURDAY
Football fans are taking a keen interest in the games between Anaheim H. S. and Long Beach to be played on the local grounds Saturday. Long Beach is conceded one of the top notch teams of the state and a good many football experts look to see the Jackrabbits run away with the championship honors. Anaheim has a very light team and will have to rely upon speed.
The locals had their first scrimmage practice of the year yesterday afternoon when the lightweight team tackled the first line up. There were flashes of good playing on both sides which indicated the possibilities for further development. The teams still need a good deal of rubbing to polish off the rough spots, but that will come as the season matures. The Long Beach games are for practice and the outcome will have no bearing upon the Orange League race which commences the week following.
The lightweight team performed particularly well against their heaviest opponent.
Kelly sends down word that he is not worrying in the least; that he beat Iman once before easily enough and expects to repeat. It ought to be a whale of a bout as both boys are determined to win—Iman to redeem himself for his defeat of last week at the hands of the former amateur champ, and Kelly to uphold his record.
Hank Gatten, another classy Santa Ana mixer, has been bothered with a slight attack of barbers itch but fully expects by tomorrow night he will be able to oblige "Fighting Jimmy" Murphy, the San Francisco battler in the semi-windup.
The preliminaries all look to be the real McCoy. Young Montoya 116-pounder from Placentia hooks up with Tommy Nichols, another good little youngster from the city of Angels. But Baker, hard-hitting welterweight, is out to even up old scores when he tackles Young Terry, also a hard hitter. Clever Johnny Nandes mixes with Danny Herrera in the curtain raiser at 122 pounds.
NAME DISTRICT OIL, GAS COMMISSIONERS
An election for district oil and gas commissioners was held at the five field offices of the Department of Petroleum and Gas, Sept. 19. In district No. 1, F. S. Banks and T. J. Crumpton were elected for terms of three years and L. T. McCutcheon for an unexpired term of two years; in district No. 2, William R. Allen and C. D. Foshaugh were elected for terms of three years; in District No. 3, T. C. Tychsen and Walter Elliott were elected for terms of three years; in district No. 4, D. T. Saine and C. M. Small were elected for terms of three years and Don Dawson for an unexpired term of one year; in district No. 5, H. G. Anderson and F. E. Rehm were elected for terms of three years.
Oil field operations reported the week ending Sept. 23, show 27 new wells started, compared with 39 previous week. The total new wells this year is 1021, as compared with 1036 the same date last year.
Tests for water shut-off 21, compared with 37 previous week. Yearly total to date 1238; total to same date last year 1141.
Deepening or redrilling jobs 15, compared with 14, preceding week. Total to date this year 594; total to same date last year 550.
The lightweight team performed particularly well against their heavier opponents yesterday and it is believed that when they line up against a team of their own weight, as they will Saturday, they will find the going much easier. This team has a good chance to beat Long Beach and the contest should be interesting from whistle to whistle.
The first team showed a great deal of fight on the defensa yesterday. The line opened some good holes for the backs to sift through on the offensive but backs and lincmen need to develop better co-operation. The backs do not always hit the holes opened for them and, as a rule, run too high when carrying the ball and running interference.
On the whole, the first scrimmage was satisfactory and the after-impression gained by those who saw the boys in action is that the Anaheim teams have possibilities of finishing well up in the Orange League. The season will be a hard one in that the games will nearly all be played against heavier opponents. But with plenty of fight and speed the weight handicap can be overcome.
By bringing the Long Beach teams here the local school affords football supporters a chance to look over two of the best teams in California interscholastic ranks. The 130-pound teams clash at 1:30 sharp and the big game will follow immediately. A large attendance is anticipated.
