SCHOOL So highly pleased with the success of the second annual summer school for community service were the president and faculty of Stanford University that they have issued an invitation to the American City Bureau to repeat the assembly next year during July or August at Palo Alto, according to Secretary Faisor, just returned from attendance at the school, which closed last Saturday. Counting the municipal officers attending, there were over 400 present at the several sessions. Some of the most interesting characters in present day California life were speakers including President Ray Lyman Wilbur, of Sanford, Rudolph Spreckels of San Francisco, and a score of officials of the larger California communities besides government experts on health and other subjects pertaining to the ideal community. In the secretarial classes the attendance was perfect; subjects that try the soul of secretaries were well talked over. At the end of each class, there were questionnaire sessions, at which the practice in each subject was given by the secretaries present, numbering over fifty. The classes began at eight each morning, and ended at five, giving each student a chance to get his favorite subjects on the program for his future betterment and that of the city he may serve. The local secretary took especial interest in community advertising, internal publicity, external publicity, civic forum, the public official and the press and other topics which were ably headed by important and experienced authorities, as, for instance, Chester Rowell, veteran editor, discussed ably the important subject of municipal news, and so on. More than three centuries ago a body of men and women left their native land and came to the bleak, rock bound shores of New England to found real homes for themselves. They endured untold privations, but they succeeded. Today, under fairer skies, and under infinitely more favorable circumstances, men and women are building or buying their own homes and enjoying that measure of love and peace and happiness that is lacking when one has to live in a rented house, subject to the heavy cost and inconveniences of frequent moves. WHAT ARE YOU DOING ALONG THIS LINE? Maybe you have feared to make the venture; but be assured, "Nothing ventured, nothing won." Every dollar put into a home of your own is that much of as asset which no one can take away from you without your consent. We know all the problems of the home builder. When people record such clear favor for an automobile, it is obvious that they have some good reason for their preference.
