"IMPOSSIBLE" HILL CLIMBED BY OLDS An Oldsmobile four-cylinder semi-spare model, with its gear shift locked in high, has broken all records in a run from Sacramento to Reno, Nevada, by negotiating the Slippery Ford Hill, a feat always considered impossible by leading automobile dealers on the Pacific coast. The car was a stock clamsis and not doctored in any way, it is said, and was taken directly from the show rooms of J. W. Leavitt & Co., San Francisco distributors, the gear shifting handle removed and the trasmision sealed in the presence of witnesses. The feat was considered so remarkable that San Francisco automobile dealers refused to believe the test until documentary evidence was produced that it had really been accomplished. In the car was J. W. Barnes, of Sacramento, manager of the J. W. Leavitt Co., Bill Cooper, an automobile race driver, who holds an A.A.A. license, George Jones, a Sacramento artist and R. F. Becker, press representative. The Slippery Ford Hill is noted along the Pacific coast for its extremely sharp pitch and it is more than a mile in length. Added to the ordinary grade difficulties the hill has two hairpin turns at which most drivers have to shift into second. The motor of the Oldsmobile was not stopped at the end of the run, but was kept running continuously for 100 hours. It was started when the car was taken from the show rooms, driven to Sacramento, over the road to Reno and then back to Sacramento and allowed to run for many hours there before it was shut off. No adjustments were necessary on the trip, it is said. Buena Park News BUENA PARK, Sept. 26.—(Spl.) A pretty wedding took place at the home of Dr. Julian P. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound—when I was a girl for pains and before and after my marriage. I now have a sweet little baby boy and will send you his picture if you wish to publish it. My sisters also take your medicine and find it a great help, and I recommend it to those who suffer before their babies are born." — Mrs. Wm. Johnson, Box 155, Park Rapids, Minn. To marry and arrive at middle age without children is a great disappointment to many women. Think of the joy and comfort other women have in their children as they grow older. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound has helped to bring great happiness to many families by restoring women to health. Often the childless home is due to a run down condition of the wife, which may be helped by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. It brought health and happiness into the home of Mrs. Johnson. Why not to THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA TIGHT WRIST WATCH CAUSES NEURITIS Be careful not to bind the strap of your wrist watch too tight. Several cases of neuritis in the fingers and hands has been traced to this cause. Dr. John S. Stopford tells in the Lanier of a student who experienced tinnling pains along the inner borders of the hand and in the little finger. These had persisted for some time and caused discomfort and anxiety. On examination a tender point was discovered and the dorsal surface of the styloid process of the ulna, and pressure in this situation caused pain so radiate from this point into the dorsal cutaneous branch of the ulnar nerve. There was no sign of paresis or atrophy of any of the intrinsic muscles of the hand, nor were any tropic changes found. On investigating a cause for this localized neuritis the only possibility appeared to be the wearing of a tight wristlet watch, which clearly could produce compression of the dorsal cutaneous branch of the lower extremity of the ulna. On discarding the wristlist the discomfort gradually disappeared. Thimbles first appeared in London about 200 years ago and made a fortune for the inventor. HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE ONCE GERMAN EMPIRE The Holy Roman Empire was the official title of the German Empire from 962 to 1806 A.D. when Francis II of Hapsburg renounced it and retained that of emperor of Austria. Although the western empire of the Romans ceased to exist in 476 A.D., Charlemagne sought to revive it more than 300 years later. He was crowned Emperor of the Romans at Rome 800 A.D. The empire, however, fell to pieces after his death but was again. —Try Plain Dealer want ads. Rev.
