OLEARY AND DEIST IN FEATURE EVENT MIKE Oleary, the Fighting Harp, will meet Scotty Deist of San Francisco in the main event of the Athletic Club's weekly boxing show tomorrow night. Matchmaker Billy Darnley believes he is going to treat his fans to another high class feature event as well as excellent preliminaries. Deist will be making his initial appearance here but he comes well recommended as a willing two-banded performer. Scotty has defeated some very promising boys now appearing around these parts. Oleary's record is well known to local fans. He has never failed to put up a good-fight. Paddy Dillon, the Santa Ana flash, will mix with rough, tough Jimmy Musso, the San Berdoo battler, who gave Johnny McGraw such a warm argument last Friday. Paddy is in good trim and expects to repeat his recent good performances. Musso sends word from the Gate City that he will be in much better condition than when he fought McGraw. It should be a classy affair. The preliminaries ought to be the real thing as well for Darnley has signed up some good material. Art Espinose the Spanish marvel, tangles with Joe Kelley of Los Angeles in the feature preliminary. Joe is a brother of Tom Kelly, the boy who beat Jack Iman last night at Delhi and he is said to be just as good and fast as big brother Tom. Art is one of the club's most willing and pleasing performers. A couple of heavy sockers are Bud Baker and Harry Bowan who mix at 145 pounds. Bowan is from Corona. A snappy curtain raiser will start proceedings for Mose Mootch is just back from Arizona where it is said he cleaned up everything his weight and thereabouts. He will mix with Pete Pina, another Corona lad, who has put a couple of good fights at the local club. MANY TRYOUT FOR GIRLS' BASKETBALL NO PLAYING FIELD FOR CHAMPS A state's champion in basketball team and no field, poised to play! That's the title you face in the title-holding Anaheim Elks, for three years pennant winners of So Cal. and last year victorious over all other Elk teams. And state with good prospects of repeating this year. This situation was disclosed in a thunderbolt to Manager Billy Knott today when high school authorities announced today they would tear up the baseball field next week and make it into a football gridiron. "It isn't as if we can't have abel grounds," says uncle Robert. They told us a year ago that MANY TRYOUT FOR GIRLS' BASKETBALL That girls are interested in basketball was shown last evening when tryouts for the class teams at the high school were held. Approximately 30 girls toy each class team turned out. The main object for the practice was to elect a manager and this afternoon when active practice begin, the manager and coach will select the class teams. The class managers for the coming year were elected as follows: Olive Toxier, freshmen; Irma Young, sophomore; Mac Requarth, junior; Frances Adams, senior. Games between the two classes will be played off within several weeks. Captains for the various sports were elected this afternoon at a conference between the coaches and the principal. The announcement that the plunge would be ready for use within two weeks was happily received by students and teachers today. The dressing rooms are not completed yet, diving boards are not in place and there are other essentials to be constructed. Coach Ray Elliott is planning to stage a water carnival on the opening date. There will be contests between the boys and girls, and different classes and he hopes to be able to secure several exhibition divers and swimmers. A program o events is being lined up and will be announced with in a few days. During the 36 weeks of school, the plunge is open only to students and faculty members. As there has been no provision for lighting the pool, it will not be open in the evening. A fence will be constructed around the plunge. TOM KELLY WINS OVER JACK IMAN Tom Kelly, known to local boxing fans as Sailor Kelly of Los Angeles, was handed a well earned decision over Jack Iman of Santa Ana in the main event at Boyd Ellis's Delhi Club last night after four torrid rounds of milling. Kelly made a big hit with Delhi bugs by his clean cut victory over his heavier and more experienced opponent and should prove a big card hereabouts. Iman failed to show any of his former class. He looks and acts stale. GRID LIGHTWEIGHTS OPEN UP OCT. 5 Lightweight football season will open Oct. 5. Lightweight games will be played Thursday and first team games Saturday. Teams will play on opposite gridirons. Tustin and Anaheim will clash at Tustin to start off the season with a bang. On Oct. 12 Anaheim and Huntington Beach will play here, Oct. 19 Anaheim goes to Whittier. Oct. 26, Anaheim at Orange; Nov. 4, Anaheim at Fullerton; Nov. 16, Santa Ana here; Nov. 23, the last Orange league game of the season leaves the local warriors out. Saturday, Nov. 11, was omitted to allow participation in patriotic programs. Coach Elliott is strong in his belief that his lightweight team will head the list at the end of the season. The boys show speed and power. CHARGE NON-SUPPORT Jailer C. O. Lacy, Jr. went to Los Angeles today to bring to Santa Ana Charles Love, charged with non-support of his child. The wife and child are in Santa Ana. Baseball Standings PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE W. L. Kelly made a big hit with Delhi bugs by his clean cut victory over his heavier and more experienced opponent and should prove a big card hereabouts. Iman failed to show any of his former class. He looks and acts stale. A good rest from ring work is what he needs. In the semi-windup, Jimmy Byrd, boxing under the name of Eddie Burns, was given a draw with Jack Austin of Huntington Beach after a fair go between big boys. Byrd defeated Kid George at the local arena a couple of weeks ago. He showed to better advantage in last night's fracas. Hank Gatten of Santa Ana and Johnny Conley of Los Angeles-boxed a draw which was a slam bang affair from start to finish. Gatten should have received the decision, but the judges thot otherwise. Babe Orton Kayowed Young Monroe in the fourth in what was about the best fight on the bill. Orton is showing up better in each start. Paul Stanley and Ike Neal boxed a classy affair to a draw. It was nip and tuck throutout and Ike made a fair showing in this come-back. Harry Lee, the Huntington Beach Bear Cat did everything but eat Tom Williams of L.A. for the first two minutes of the first round when the towel was thrown in to save Tommy. 3 LOCAL TEAMS IN HOLLYWOOD TOURING Three local teams have been lined up for the city bowling tournament at Hollywood next week starting Monday. Each team contains one A, two B, and two C bowlers. The teams are: No. 1—Wm. Karam, George Theodore, Jack Huzzard, Fritz Yeorn and Pres Varner.
