DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
There is not on earth a soul so base
But may obtain a place
Incovenanted grace;
So that his feeble prayer of faith obtains
Some loosening of his chains,
And earnests of the great release, which rise
From gift to gift, and reach at length the eternal prize.
—John Henry Newman.

The Cuban Congress will not do what Uncle Sam wants it to do. But neither will the American Congress, for that matter.
The hand of the Turk is a bloody hand, and it should be loosed from its hold upon Europe and from its power to persecute Christian peoples.
The Turk should be whipped to a finish and then should be put under such metes and bounds that he would cease to be a maker of trouble.
The country will react favorably to the settlement of the two big strikes. A feeling of optimism, confidence and cheer is sweeping across the land.
Your carefulness on an outing may prevent a very destructive forest fire. Consider that you save the community a great deal by being careful with fire.
Federal, state and local authorities should proceed vigorously against coal profiteers. The consumer should not be left to the mercy of cormorantic greed.
PERSONAL ENCOUNTER IN CONGRESS
Congressman Oliver, "the gentleman from Alabama,"urcharged with warmth of blood, proceeded to strike Congressman Dutsey chairman of the Rivera, and Harbors Committee. Kind friends intervened in prevent a knockout mill. The whole affair was unwarranted, of course. Anything that might be said in the chamber of the House or Senate would not justify a personal encounter between members on the floor and while Congress is in session. Those legislative halls are not exactly holy, but they border too much open the ground of sacredness, devoted to public business, to be turned into a boxing arena.
Both principals in the fight undoubtedly keenly regret it today. They were sorry a few minutes after, no doubt. Men who have sufficient character to be elected to Congress should have sufficient control over their respective tempers to ferro fistic bouts in the halls of legislation. It lowers the dignity of congress to have such scenes.
WHIPPINING POST IS URGED TO STOP BANDITRY
Rather startling is the recommendation of William A. Pinkerton, noted detective, that the whipping post and pillory be used as a means of punishing hold-up men and sneak thieves. Mr. Pinkerton beloves that a revival of the penalties inflicted in Puritan colonial days would be more effectual today than jail sentences.
But public sentiment hardly would support a means of punishment which smacks of the brutal Corporal punishment, in public, is out of tune with the spirit of this age. No matter how brutal the crime, the public does not want the brutality compounded by the inflicting of penalties. In the name of law, out of keeping with the spirit of times. The whipping-post and the pillory are values of a by-gone age. There

A healthy body is as important in the general economy, as a healthy mind. The one who is developed symmetrically in body, mind and soul, is truly well educated.
The whole Southwest should interest itself in striving for the building of the projected Boulder Dam. Agitation should persist, so that the enterprise may not languish, or be delayed in starting.
