ALL SET FOR GREAT MAT BATTLE TONITE
(By Sargum Sprout)
The Stage is all set for the big wrestling match tonight. The arena is in readiness, the mat is laid and the extra seats are in place. Nothing remains but the ringing of the gong by big Bud McAlvay, and the match of matches will be on.
Both Ad Santel and Roy Mabe are in the best of condition and ready to go. Ad is sure of his ability to throw Roy, and Roy is just as sure Ad cannot.
A great preliminary has been lined up. Art Gillmon, two-year student of Walter Miller, and present light weight amateur of the coast, has been engaged to wrestle the pride of Perris, Allen Foss. In Gillman, Foss is meeting a man of his own weight and also a man who will prove just how good Foss really is. This preliminary will be worth the price of admission and the big match will be thrown in for good measure.
The curtain rises at 8:30. There are still a few reserved and ring-side seats to be had at the Elks Club, United Cigar Store or Anaheim Barber Shop.
Billy Darnley will act as referee.
Those interested in wrestling and that love good, clean sport cannot afford to miss this match between two men of such ability and who are real gentlemen and citizens. Let's go!
Santel received his early training in Chicago. He was soon reckoned a tough bird to pin. His wrestling was unusual in that he introduced so much original stuff. Farmer Burns, the man that made Gotch champion of the world, says that Santel is the greatest original wrestler the world has ever known. While Santel was yet young in the game, Yosiff Hussane, the Terrible Turk, blew into Chicago. Hussane was looked on as the coming world's champion, and demanded publicity of the Chicago papers. A match was arranged with Santel and the Terrible One went down in four minutes.
After Ad had cleaned up in Chicago he moved over to Kansas City, there he beat Jim Asbell and all comers for several months. When the crop of wrestlers gave out in Kansas City he moved on to Wichita.
NAVY CHAMP WILL BOX HERE FRIDAY
Scotty Deist, a promising 138-pound boxer from San Francisco, will take on that fighting Irish lad, Mike O'Leary, in the Athletic Club's main event Friday evening.
Deist is a former navy boy and has only recently left the service. While in the good old U. S. N., he did considerable ring work with much success. He is a clean performer with his mitts as well as a good boxer and mixer. Looking into his record there are several K. O.'s attached to his opponents', name which indicate he is a mean hitter. In the finals of the Atlantic Fleet Boxing Championships, last spring Scotty ran second it is true but, as there must be a decision no draws allowed, the judges ordered the extra round and it was here that his opponent received the judges verdict. Deist will make a good man for Irish Mike and the 'Harp' will have to step fast all the way to get an even break. O'Leary has never failed to put up a he-man fight of it each time he has appeared at the local arena.

Santel is the greatest original wrestler the world has ever known. While Santel was yet young in the game, Yoalff Hussane, the Terrible Turk, blew into Chicago.
Dellvuk was the king bee in Wichita but not for long after Santel hit town. Bill Demetral also took the count at Wichita. Ad was meeting all comers and treating them all alike.
About this time John Berk was holding forth in San Antonia and was considered one of the toughest 170 pounders on earth. It took Ad four minutes to convince Berg that Ad Santel was a better man. After about a year in San Antonia, Ad moved to San Francisco, where he has made his headquarters since.
After cleaning up Frisco of men of his weight, he took on Strangler Lewis and Joe Steckler. He then went to Japan and Europe and wrestled the world's best.
Plain Dealer Offers Pantomime Feature
Pictures are more interesting than words.
If stories can be told by pictures alone, why use words?
Such is the philosophy of John H. Striebel, originator of "Pantomime," a unique daily feature in the Plain Dealer.
Mr. Striebel's "Pantomime" uses no words at all. Everything is told by pictures alone.
"Pantomime" will combine in one the best elements of the modern comic strip, the sketch from life, and the daily cartoon. It has all the humor and all the punch of the best of comics (without being the least slapstick or low-brow).
"Pantomime" represents a refreshingly radical departure from the well-worn paths of comic art. It will portray in an entirely novel way his record there are several K. O.'s attached to his opponents' name which indicate he is a mean bitter. In the finals of the Atlantic Fleet Boxing Championships, last spring Scotty ran second it is true but, as there must be a decision no draws allowed, the judges ordered the extra round and it was here that his opponent received the judges verdict. Diest will make a good man for Irish Mike and the 'Harp' will have to step fast all the way to get an even break. O'Leary has never failed to put up a he-man fight of it each time he has appeared at the local arena.
Matchmaker Darnley will have a good semi-windup and the usual number of good preliminaries.
COME ON, HORSE SHOE PITCHERS!
Boy, page the horse shoe pitchers! The annual Calif. tournament of horse shoe pitchers will be held at Long Beach, Sept. 28-30th.
This is the greatest event of the kind ever staged west of the Rockies and is open to all Calif. Players. Several hundred dollars in cash prizes will be awarded the winners. There are to be five events and each player is limited to one event. In case of a large registration, the elimination plan will be adopted and in case of a tie all will be played off. No freak shoes are to be allowed. Any one desiring further information on rules, regulations and registration can correspond with George E. Kreibill, Sec. Cal., Ass'n, Long Beach.
Friend of ours, who will try everything dangerous, is undecided whether to endist for the European war or go deer hunting in the back country.
Sheeza Dumbell is so dumb she thinks. That Marion is Harding's sister, and that National City is a nickname for Washington, D.C.
Iaughable situations of life as seen by a man with keen sense of humor and a skilled pen.
Because of his unusual versatility Mr. John H. Striebel, creator of "Pantomime," is well-fitted to perform the difficult task he has undertaken. From the time he started as a boy artist in South Bend, Ind., becoming at the age of 15 years, the youngest front-page cartoonist in the county, until today when he ranks as one of the most widely known and highly-paid artists of the middle west he has been accumulating experience to fit him for doing the work that he planned to do for the Plain Dealer. "Pantomime" will interpret life in all its funny phases.
Recently Mr. Striebel's name has become widely known as illustrator of "The Potters," the humorous Sunday feature, done by J. P. McEvoy for the Chicago Sunday Tribune.
"Pantomime" will appear daily on his record there are several K. O.'s attached to his opponents' name which indicate he is a mean bitter. LUCKIEST BOY IN THE WORLD
Ask Oscar Ray Grimes, Jr., who the best first baseman in the National League is, and without hesitation he'll answer "Oscar Ray Grimes, Sr." The youngster is bat boy for the Chicago Cubs and is hailed as the "luckiest boy in the world," for since his mascoting, the Chicago Cubs have hoped into the National League fray and are trying to keep pace with the league leading Gains. Oscar Ray Grimes junior and senior are pictured here in earnest conversation probably figuring out some intricate trick play.
