NEW MOTOR ON FRANKLIN INCREASES ITS HILL-CLIMBING POWER BY 20 PER CENT
The first showing of the latest six-cylinder Franklin, designated as Series 10, which is being made this week in all parts of the country, discloses the new motor about which so many rumors have been current in automobile circles for some time.
From a performance standpoint, power is the feature which shows the most noteworthy development in the Franklin with the new motor. In hill climbing, this greater power represents a 20 per cent increase in ability, and in speed, a 10 per cent increase, tests made by the Franklin company show, without, however, involving any change in the size of the motor, but registering in fact, a worthwhile reduction in fuel consumption.
From a design standpoint, Series 10 Franklin introduces some entirely new ideas in air-cooling which are the embodiment of work started by Franklin engineers as far back as 1915. The cooling apparatus functioning on the new motor, and called the pressure system, is known to have undergone tests on over a score of cars, and aggregating 500,000 miles, before its adoption. It develops a current of cooling air which is fully two and one-half times that of the former Franklin system.
The new cooling system takes the air in at the front of the motor and forces it over the cylinders. This is the direct opposite from the method formerly employed in which the air was drawn in by a fan set in the flywheel at the rear of the motor. A blower or fan of the Sirocco type is mounted at the forward end of the crankshaft and encased in an aluminum housing. The air forced in by the blower passes through a continuation of this aluminum housing, is carried over the upper ends of the under jacks and down across the cooling fins which are set in the walls of the cylinders.
A change has been made in the cooling fins, the ends being bent at approximate right angles so that they form what practically amounts to a closed jacket about the cylinders through which the air is conducted. This does away with the use of the separate outer jacket as used in former models, affords greater cooling area and permits a reduction in the length of the fins themselves.
With the new pressure system of cooling, the air forced in by the blower is absolutely controlled by baffle plates placed in the aluminum passageway already referred to, and this makes it possible to direct the necessary amount of air to those points where the greatest amount of heat is developed.
To make possible the most efficient use of the steadily lowering quality of gasoline now offered the motoring public, the new Franklin motor is equipped with what Franklin engineers term a fuel transformer. This device is in the shape of a cylindrical aluminum casting with corrugated walls surrounded by a heater jacket through which the exhaust gas of the engine is passed. Raw gasoline on its way to the inlet manifold is led through the interior of this transformer and subjected to heat which turns it into vapor. The device is so designed that it is impossible for anything except vapor to pass through it to the inlet manifold. "Heavy ends" in the gas which were not broken up or vaporized in their first passage through the transformer are trapped and returned again to the bottom of the transformer, to be subjected once more to passage over the heated corrugated walls. This operation is repeated as many times as is necessary to produce the vapor. The device affords the Franklin a high degree of efficiency in the use of the lowest grades of gasoline, in addition to preventing raw gasoline from being drawn into the cylinders and passing from there into the crank case to cause dilution of the lubricating oil.

HERE ARE FEATURES OF HUDSON SEDAN
The seven-passenger sedan, containing all the recent Hudson improvements of body and motor design, including the new super-six motor, and several additional features, was produced in strict conformity with Hudson details of fine manufacturing precision, says H. L. Grove, Hudson and Essex distributor.
The increased length has been given to both the front and rear compartments, especially between the rear and auxiliary seats. Additional space has been given the driver, and the front seat, designed along the general lines of the touring limousine, makes the driver's position even more restful than heretofore.
Even better ventilation than on previous models is provided for by a larger crowd ventilator, equipped with a deflector.
Upholstery and floor rugs are of a deep, rich blue, the former being a long wearing broadcloth.
All doors have the regulation Hudson substantial four hinge supports, insuring perfect alignment. Entirely to and exits from the rear are faceted by wider doors, which also open wider.
Drum type side lamps at the base of the windshield are standard equipment. Body and body panels are finished in Valentine blue. Chassis parts are black.
Kelly-Springfield Factories are Rushed
The gloom in many business quarters is not illustrated in the Kelly-Springfield factories, says S. R. Walter of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works, local distributor.
“This is the best year we have had,” he said. “Month after month has gone by with the sales running bigger than they did last year, which was a phenomenal year. I am informed that he majority of dealers in United States tires are showing big gains. The Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. is one of the old-fashioned companies that does business on solid lines and that probably accounts for the fact that it is enjoying the biggest year in its history.”
“QUIETNESS PRIME 1922 REQUISITE”
In former days the electrics “had it all over” the gasoline cars in silence and smoothness of operation. Not so in 1922. The pick of engineering science has been indefatigably concentrated on the gasoline car—and one of the problems that engineers have not ceased to deal with is the elimination of noise. Not a click nor a whimper will be tolerated, says McGraw Bros., of Fullerton, Velie distributors.
One has to see the inside of a motor to understand what has been done to achieve the silence of the gasoline motor of today. Such a dey Velie Motors Corp. A cutaway of the Velie-built motor shows the unique construction of push rods, rocker arms and valve mechanism for perfect silence. For example, the push rods have a ball and cup joint at each end. These cups are so arranged that they are kept constantly full of oil which forms a cushion and muffles the noise of contact.
Exide Battery Lead In Length Of Life
Careful investigation of the comparative length of life of four of the leading batteries on cars of various makes shows that the Exide stands first in every instance, according to George Ennis, proprietor of the Automotive Electric Co.
Here are the figures for various cars: Buick, 28.30 months; Cadillac, 59.5; Chevrolet, 23.37; Dodge, 21.19; Escsex, 21.42; Hudson, 28.46; Ford, 18.04; Overland, 25.73; Studebaker, 25.25.
Not all of the cars have been equipped with all four batteries, but taking the Buick as an example, on which three of the four competed, 606 Exide batteries gave a total length of life of 17,149 months. The same comparison might be made with the same results on other cars, says Ennis.

MILLER RUBBER CO. HAS GOOD 6 MONTHS
The report of The Miller Rubber Company for the six months ending June 30, 1922, showed sales of $12,119,741.77 as compared with $9,445,882.43 for the corresponding period last year.
This is an increase of 28 per cent in dollars and an excess of 100 per cent in production and sale of tires in pieces. The company's strong dealer position was very materially improved during the first half of the year. Prices are extremely low and it is impossible and unwise to make any predictions for the ensuing six months.
The net profits after interest, depreciation and all charges except Federal Income Tax are $1,026,-317.88.
Lexington Another Word For Efficiency
The foreman of one of the leading shops handling cars that travel the mountain roads—a man who is familiar with all of the finest cars made—speaks enthusiastically of the Lexington's strength, endurance and power. According to this man, the Lexington hasn't a peer among cars, regardless of price, on the grade. And "it keeps well." It doesn't merely look nice to buy.
Precision is the watchword of this car's manufacture, according to T. L. DeCew, manager of the local distributing station. As much care is taken with this big machine as would be taken with a fine watch. The famous Anstead motor, the Moore multiple exhaust system, the double triangular center cross member, the Lexi-gasifier etc. make the Lexington one of the most unique cars on the market.
