Wednesday, August 30, 1922 SEMI-FINALS AT VERNON SUNDAY Well, fans, the arrangements have been settled for the big series with Pasadena for the So. Cal. championship of the Cal. Elks' Baseball League. All three games will be played on successive Sundays, starting next Sunday, at Vernon ball park. The preliminaries were settled at a conference late yesterday between Managr Billy Knott of Anahim Elks and Manager L. G. Ury of Pasadena in the Crown City late yesterday. Knott won the toss and declared the games would be played in Vernon instead of one being played here, one in Brookside Park and one in Vernon. Ferguson and Mohler will be umpires. A big bunch of rooters is expected to accompany the team Sunday. HUNTINGTON BEACH STAR ENTERS U.S.C. Verdon Nash, famous Huntington Beach star of the cinder path, has announced his intention of entering U.S.C. next month. This piece of news pas grasped with eagerness by the coach as their track team has been considerably weakened by last year's graduation. Nash is the state interscholastic broad jump artist and has cleared more than 22 feet. U.S.C. is after the other famous Huntington Beach stars, such as Kerr, the championship miler, and the famous Blickmore athlete, Milton Nash, brother of Verdon, who has made a name for himself in athletic circles, has two years more to go at CASEY THE CORNER HERE STUPID-TEAR OUT TO ZAP'S CORNER AN' BIRING IN THAT HOUND THATS RUNNING AROUND WITH-OUT A MUZZLE! RAINING PIANOS ON DANZ THIS MONTH It never rains but it pours! Just now it is raining pianos on Louis Danz, "Think of Music" man, and it's no gentle spring shower, either. Danz ordered two carloads of pianos to be delivered in "Aug." and two in "Oct." May be Louis' penmanship isn't all it should be. Anyway, the factory interpreted his "Oct." to read "Aug." and has fired all four carloads to him. This is not an unusual mistake for a manufacturer if business is a little dull. The third carload arrived today and Louis is scurrying around for storage space as his store is already swamped. The fourth carload will be along in a few days. In order to get out from under, Louis is making a special offer of a player piano, 50 music rolls, piano bench and music cabinet for $348 delivered with payment of only $10 down. BRITIAN LOOKS FOR BRITIAN LOOKS FOR BIG FALL BUSINESS LONDON, Aug. 30.—Britain is embarking on a great fall trade boom, according to the Daily Express. All trades report increasing business from America, the dominions, India and the Far East. Money rates are tightening as the result of increased demand for credits arising from greater industrial activity. The textile industry is booming, while wool combers are making record profits. Japan is taking enormous quantities of the better class woolens, purchases recently reaching 2,000,000 square yards monthly. Australia, Canada and New Zealand are buying heavy coatings and cheap crossbred cloths. Cotton prices are rising, partly as a result of less satisfactory crop reports from America and partly because of increased demand. India is buying heavily. Exports of cotton cloth were larger in July than during any month in the past five years. The American coal strike continues to provide large business for the Welsh mines, which will continue for a considerable time regardless of the resumption of mining in America, owing to the depleted stocks in the United States and Canada. ABANDONED BOY HEIR TO MILLIONS CHICAGO, Aug. 30.—Robert William Ross, 10, was whirling east today under the jealous guard of representatives of wealthy relatives to take his pace as he heir to millions. The boy was abandoned on the doorstep of the Guardian Angels Home at Joliet just ten years ago and sent, when two weeks old, to St. Vincent's here. The baby was given to Mrs. Hand on probation. She took it to San Francisco and left it with her mother, Mrs. Permelea Ross, wife of Sergeant William Ross, of the San Francisco police force, who adopted the child in California. The frantic eastern relatives started search for the boy. For nine years the search continued and finally ended in San Francisco, where habeas corpus proceedings were filed against Mrs. Ross, who surrendered the boy. Today he is on his way to join relatives near Boston. Their identity or the location... Yesterday's Results Pittsburg, 2-6; Brooklyn, 3-0. Chicago, 15; St. Louis, 11. No other games scheduled. NORTHERN LUMBER SHIPMENTS SWELL SPOKANE, Aug. 30—Lumber shipments by members of the Western Pine Manufacturers' Ass'n during the first half of this year were double the first six months in 1921. A. W. Cooper, secretary-treasurer, states in his last report. Production in the same period increased about 40 per cent. Shipments in the first half of this year exceeded the cut in the member mills by about 179,000,-000 feet, compared in an excess of cutting of about 19,000,000 feet in 1921. YAKIMA WOOL CLIP SHRINKS; BIG PRICE YAKIMA, Aug. 30—The 1922 wool clip of the Yakima valley is cleaned up, according to reports in railway circles. The clip totaled 1,800,000 pounds, which is 200,000 less than the 1921 clip. The average price of 26 cents a pound is practically twice that of last year and aggregates $468,000 for the clip. The money came in as the wool rolled out, as little was sold on assignment this year. SPRUCE FOR PAYER It is said that 57,000,000 tons of spruce wood are required annually to furnish pulp for the 38,000,000 tons of paper used annually in the United States. WINE GROWERS FEAR POSSIBLE DRY LAW PARIS, Aug. 30—French wine growers are becoming alarmed lest Sweden and other Scandinavian countries go dry. They are so alarmed, in fact, that Mayor Gerard of Dijon has undertaken an anti-prohibition campaign all his own, that will take him all over Europe. The honorable mayor has just finished preaching of the glories of good old Burgundy in Switzerland, Belgium and Holland. He is now in Sweden, and from there will proceed to Norway and Denmark. "I am not paid by any organization to take this tour," the mayor decalays in his talks, according to word coming back from cities he has visited. "I come merely as the mayor of a Burgundy city to seek to prove that prohibition is a psychological error, defeating its own alms." SURE U.S.WILL ENTER LEAGUE OF NATIONS VIENNA, Aug. 30—Entry of the United States into the League of Nations is only a matter of time. James M. Cox, defended Democratic candidate for the Presidency and former governor of Ohio, declared in an interview given here today. Mr. Cox arrived by motor after traveling through Italy, Switzerland and Austria on his tour, to study European conditions first hand. He spent several days at Geneva studying thoroughly the workings of the league. WM.J.OELKE FUMIGATOR 218 S.Clementme Anaheim Phong·240-M THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER. ANAHEIM.
