750,000 Dodge Cars
Finer Car Than Ever
The production of the Dodge Motor Car Company has passed the 750,000 mark, according to a bulletin which has reached Charley Mann, local distributor of the seven or more models of cars and trucks manufactured by the concern. The Company, which is one of the most conservative in the business, declares it can point to three quarters of a million satisfied owners of the cars as evidence of their quality.
Mann's new Dodge sedan, which he has been exhibiting in his showrooms, is attracting much notice here. Without any proportionate boost in price, this model is the most attractive is roomier, handsomer and made. In it the changes of body design, in the direction of straighter lines, etc. etc., are evident at once. Various refinements, such as a heater, which can be operated without additional cost, has been installed. The upholstery is a remarkable combination of beauty and durability.
The Dodge line, with these new 1922 models, the businessman's coupe, commercial cars, etc., has never been more complete and satisfactory.
New Reo Models to Be Offered Shortly
Six new body styles of Reo cars are announced by Manager Cromer of the local branch of Dale & Co.: A four-passenger sport phaeton, selling at $1,595 here; popular coupe, popular sedan, special sanitary school bus, taxicab and dump cart. The firm now has a line of upward of 16 vehicles, besides 17 different body combinations on its speed wagon chassis. A hearse, an ambulance and a line of fire fighting vehicles are included.
The new Reo dump cart is expected in California about November 1. It possesses a full swing, hydraulic hose, is of a ton and one-half and meant for quick hauling.
The phaeton will reach Los Angeles showrooms next Tuesday. It is the finest thing for the money ever manufactured, Manager Cromer says. With vanity kit, Spanish grey upholstery, grey lion tennant.
115-Inch Wheel Base Best Average Claim
Traffic conditions due to the rapid multiplication of automobiles have brought the question of the size of the car sharply to the fore, say McGraw Bros., of Fullerton, Velle distributors.
The motoring public long ago made five passenger room the standard of seating space, as is witnessed by its almost universal adoption. For the leading models of well known lines. With this recognized standard of room builders have vied in the development of lightness of weight consistent with ample strength, car balance and comfortable riding qualities.
Today the congestion in streets, roads and parking places gives another importance to the size. Motorists look for the cars that can be handled most easily in a flock of automobiles, turned in narrow streets and readily parked at curbs.
There are almost as many women and girl drivers as men, and they also have had a voice in determining the size that meets the conditions.
To ascertain the experience and preference of motorists on car size the Velle Motor corporation made a widespread investigation.
With all returns in, the conclusion announced by the Velle is that the wheelbase of 115 inches provides for a car of "just the right size" for the majority.
In support of this finding it is instanced that some of the oldest and most prominent manufacturers that have been building cars of longer wheelbase have now centered their production on cars of this size or near it.
The economy of the car of this size range is also adduced as one of its strongest arguments.

SCRANTON, Pa., Aug. 16.—Charles Body, aged 60, was dying of a fractured skull today. His daughter of 10 years faced a murder charge. The child saw Body heating his wife and, seizing a clothes pole, hit her father on the head several times.

Chalmers New Value For Good "Six" Cars
"The announcement of the reduction in price of the Chalmers six to $1185 is one of the most important of the recent price changes, as it establishes a new low mark for fine six-cylinder cars, such as the Chalmers has always been," say Turton & Lumsden, Maxwell and Chalmers distributors.
"The policy of the organization now producing the Chalmers six has been to make the car an outstanding value.
"Under price conditions that have prevailed for the past year, the value of the Chalmers has been very pronounced.
"But the new price puts it practically in a class by itself. It is the lowest price that has ever been placed on a car at all to be compared with the Chalmers six."
Keep Caps on Values, Tire Man Here Warns
"Keep your caps on your tire valves, and if one is missing don't delay in replacing it," urges Clyde S. Williams of the Anahein Vulcanizing Works. "If dust gets into the valve while the cap is gone, as dust will, it will work down into the tube when you inflate your tire and soon cause trouble." The company—S. R. Walter—is exclusive distributor for Kelly-Springfield tires here.
Any good tire will suffer by such neglect, says Williams.
Simple, isn't it?
The company has been selling Kelly-Springfields, Brunswicks and others have been in active demand from users who take this time to stock up at the reduced prices.

Jewett "On High" Goes To Arrowhead Inn
Driving all the way to Arrowhead Inn in a Jewett on high gear and the rest of the way to Big Bear on intermediate, Sam Hubbell, distributor for the Pallge and Jewett, convinced himself that the Jewett car is all and more than is claimed for it. It was Hubbell's first actual tryout of the machine on such a trip.
With Mrs. Hubbell he left on Saturday evening at about 7 o'clock and arrived three hours later at Pinecrest.
Not a stop was made en route and on the entire trip it was unnecessary to look after gas, oil or water.
The trip at night is one of the pleasantest that can be made, said Hubbell. After passing thru Waterman's cayon, if the night is clear with plenty of moonlight, one can see a dozen different communities at one
DURABILITY MEANS VALUE, SAYS RILEY
If you're purchasing a car which lasts long at small upkeep cost, you're purchasing more car than you would otherwise. Getting a large car with a variety of equipment, etc., is only part of the value story.
Harry D. Riley's sales the past week or two, which have been unusually large, illustrated this fact again. As usual, the number of Studebakers under three years old has been few or nil. At the same time, the Studebaker possesses all the pre-use value that anybody could demand like vision to care.
The Studebaker improves in use value up to the fourth year, Riley indicated today, in discussing the matter.
Riley raises a pertinent question here, for of course it isn't one car in a dozen of which this is true.
Not only in use value, however, but in appearance and other items of value other than use value the Studebaker holds up extraordinarily well. The enamel and nickeling and finish ensure this, says Riley.
WINE TESTER TIRES; 3000 TASTES SLOW
PARIS, Augu. 18. "It is every trying job—by no means the least occupation it is supposed to be."
So said R. L. Guilbert, Quebec's new liquor commissioner in Paris, who is one of the most expert wine and spirit tasters in the world and spends a great part of every day in sipping the finest French vintages.
"After sampling 20 wines, especially red ones, I feel billions. After tasting a series of brandies my mouth feels as if it had been rasped all over inside with a file and my tongue seems to be hanging out."
Mr. Guilbert never swallows when he tastes and after each sip refreshes his palate with a draught of ice water.
Mr. Guilbert was sent to Paris by the province of Quebec to test the quality of the liquor shipped over there. He is behind time with his tasting program by 3,000 samples, owing to the pressure of work in the opening of the new organization.
He says Canadians like more body in their drinks than the English: "The way to taste a glass of wine," he said, "is first to shake it gently, get the bouquet, then sip slowly."
July sales in California jumped 53 per cent over sales of July, 1921, reaching 16,696. June, the largest month in the industry in the State, was 8 per cent better.
That's all—She—that's all.

No Adjustments on Apex Tires is 6 Mos.
Not a single adjustment for blow-out has been made on Apex tires in the approximately six months that the time has been sold here, says the Re-Mable Tire Co., distributors. The local concern is selling a good many of the larger sizes of the tire for the big cars.
Buyers find that the tough and non-skid tread make the Apex unusually durable, the strip of solid rubber in the center running clear around the circumference and a similar strop on each side of the tread resisting the severest punishment of the road. The alternating small and large pockets are what make the tire so resistive to skidding.
One day recently the company sold 19 tires, and each month's business is reported to have been better than that of the month preceding.

SCANDAL, SEEN IN BIRD CIRCLES
NOANK, Conn., Aug. 15.—Capt. J. C. Sistare, fair and square sailorman and E. M. Ashby, good citizen and true, have been shocked at the alliance which has been formed between a rather rakish looking blackbird and a robin, which have evidently formed a partnership and have started housekeeping together.
The pair was first noticed carrying sticks, dry grass, etc., to a corner of the eaves trough in a house near the freight yard. Some fussy observer did not like this evidence of bird miscegenation—or whatever it might be called—and routed the saucy pal from this perch. Now, however, the have taken possession of the decayed spot in an apple tree where the limb had been sawed off, the blackbird making the place larger with his long, sharp bill.
The pair are never seen with others of the species, and it is evident that they have been ostracized by both robins and blackbirds. People in the neighborhood of the odd nails are watchfully waiting.
