FULLERTON DEPT. JULY SEES LITTLE BUILDING ACTIVITY That Fullerton struck the "low water" mark in its building activities during the month of July was the substance of the announcement made yesterday by E. S. Richman, city inspector, of Fullerton. Mr. Richman stated that only 29 permits were issued during the month of July and these for buildings covering improvements valued at approximately $48,251. Notwithstanding these low figures for July, this has been a great year for building in Fullerton, and many buildings are under construction or contemplation. Permits may be issued this month for the new city hall building and the Chapman building, so it is possible that these may not be taken out until in September. Prominent buildings now under construction include the large new California hotel, which is expected to be completed at an early date, and be ready for occupancy by October, and the new high school building additions, which are going up at a rapid rate, some of them nearing completion. The new buildings under construction, or contemplation when completed will give Fullerton one of the finest city hall, store buildings, school buildings and finest hotel of any city in So. Cal., several times its size. "There's nothing too good for Fullerton," says the slogan of businessmen here. MAKE PEAT BRICKS REED LEADING IN SENSATIONAL RACE ST. LOUIS, Mo., Aug. 2.—Senator James A. Reed bitterly denounced by former President Woodrow Wilson in the Missouri primary election fight, was gaining steadily over his opponent, Breckenridge Long, for the Democratic senatorial nomination as returns from yesterday's election rolled in. Returns from more than two-thirds of the state's 5834 precincts gave Reed 140,856 and Long 128,-933. With but 17 precincts missing out of 618 in St. Louis, Reed was leading Long by 25,439 votes. SEEK MAN IN GIRL SHOOTING SCRAPE LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3.—While Miss Mary Hough, 24 years old, lay in the French hospital today fighting for her life, with three bullet hoices in her body, police sought for Paul Curran, 26, of 743 South Ardmore-ave., whom she charged with having attempted to kill her because she refused to marry him. Curran, it was charged, also shot and slightly wounded Harry Jensen, 1133 Fifth avenue, who ran to Miss Hough's assistance when he heard her scream. The fact that two shots were heard after Curran leaped from the automobile and, leaving the girl lying wounded in the road, fled into the brush, suggested that he might have committed suicide, but search failed to disclose his body. WISSER'S UNIFORM SCARES AWAY DEER Peter Wisser, prominent local sporting goods man, has just returned from a deer hunting trip to the headwaters of the Santa Maria river in Kern-co. It is stated that Mr. IWasser outbid the other local sporting goods houses for Mike Lopez, the crack shot of the country, to go with him, hoping to come back loaded to the brim with deer meat. They left on the opening of the season, Aug. 1, and it is told that the nearest they came to getting venison was to find a deer which someone else had killed, and which was fried up to skin and bones, and could not even be brot back as a specimen. Mr. Wisser"s friends say of him that he wore a red shirt and bells on his collar to keep from getting shot, and that apparently all the deer were frightened away. $1,000,000 LOSS IN BIG IOWA HAILSTORM CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Aug. 2. You can use this letter for the sake of others if you wish.' — Mrs. WELDON G. HATFIELD, R. R. 3, Sabina, Ohio.
