Long Beach C. of C. to Back Miracle Play
The Long Beach C. of C. advertising party for the Miracle Play was in the city Thursday. This progressive commercial body has added to its activities the production of an annual modern miracle play, a distinctive type of purposeful dramatic production. This year's offering, "The Man from Judah," by Clyde Sheldon Shepard, will be staged for a month beginning August 10th. Its musical, dramatic, costume and biblical features make it an attraction of unusual merit.
The party which visited this city in the interests of the play included Dr. Shepard, the author and star of the play; Mr. Horace Macdonald, general manager; Mr. Cress, K. Stead, supervisor of public cooperation, and Mr. Revan de Komaroff, director of oriental effects. Undoubtedly many citizens of this community will wish to see the play, and it is hoped that the churches and clubs in cooperation will have a local day at the production, in which case this city will receive valuable publicity, as well as witness one of the dramatic achievements of this year.

WINSTON CHURCHILL BUYS FAMILY GHOST
LONDON, July 28 — Winston Churchill, colonial minister, is planning to buy a home with a family ghost, a moat, and a curated treasure.
The house is that which—after being untenanted for 12 years, was bougain in 1920 by Miss Shirley Keenog, well-known musical comedy stoar. It stands in 220 acres of ground in East Barnet, near the residence of Sir Thomas Lipton.
The ghost which goes with the mansion is said to be that of Geoffery de Mandeville, Eary of Essex, one of the most turbulent of the Norman barons who disturbed the reign of Stephen. According to some historians, he was killed at Maidenhall in 1144, but others say he was concealed in the grounds of the "Little Grove" as the mansion is known, and fell into the moat where he was drowned.
His ghost still walks, it is authoritatively stated by the villagers, being disturbed by the fact that there is great treasure chained to the bottom of the moat.
Quite recently a secret chamber was discovered in the building which contained some valuable works of art—a consideration which should appeal to the secretary who is an artist himself.

DISCUSS REASONS FOR BIG PRODUCTION
The May chapter of the seventh annual report of the state oil and gas supervisor, "Summary of Operations — California Oil Fields," which is now being distributed, contains a discussion of production and consumption.
The report compares probable causes of the present period of overproduction with those existing between 1910 and 1915. The supervisor concludes that one of the principal differences between the condition of overproduction existing in 1915, and that of the present, is that formerly there was an overproduction of fuel crudes, whereas now there is an overproduction of refining crudes. In 1910, 72 per cent of the crude oil produced was under 20 de Baume' and 28 per cent over 20 deg. Baume'. At the present time about 30_per cent of the state's production runs under, and 70 per cent over, 20 deg. Baume'.
Oil field operations reported the week ending July 22, show 27 new wells started compared with 32 previous week. The total new wells this year is 769, compared with 848 the same date last year.
Tests for water shut-off 33, compared with 32 previous week. Yearly total to date 957; total to same date last year 898.
Deepening or redrilling jobs 15, compared with 10 preceding week. Total to date this year 490; total to same date last year 452.
Abandonments 3, compared with 4 preceding week. Total to date this year 160; total to same date last year 132.

OPIUM PALACES GONE FROM CHINA
SHANGHAI, July 28—With reports of the International Anti-Opium Association, declaring that the opium poppy is being grown extensively in certain provinces of China and that much of the suffering from famine is caused by the planting of the poppy instead of wheat, a nationwide campaign against opium now is under way.
An investigation of opium smoking here reveals the facts that palatial opium dens of this city—world famous a few years ago—have disappeared; that the wealthy Chinese are smoking the "pipe" in beautifully fitted rooms in their own homes; that the poorer classes seek out badly kept dens, carefully hidden, and that the coolie clauses has resorted to opium tea.
Up until 1917, when the dens were closed by law, the opium palaces were the most popular gathering places of the Chinese.
