ANAHEIM CALIFORNIA INCREASE PENSIONS OF RETIRED PASTORS "Presbyterians of this state have every reason to feel encouraged," said F. N. Gibbs, who has just returned home from Pasadena, where he has been attending the meeting of the Synods of California and Arizona July 20-27. "The plan of reorganization adopted by the Presbyterians of California and Nevada after two years of study puts California synod in the front rank of Presbyterian progress," said Mr. Gibbs. "The Synod of Arizona has appointed a committee to seek a similar plan of organization so that the work of the church may be better centralized." The plan adopted by California involves the appointment of a committee made up of representatives from every part of California and Nevada, one-third of whom are women. This committee will direct the work of the church through four major committees, corresponding to the Boards of General Assembly. The chairman of these committees are: National Missions, Dr. Ira W. Barnett, of Riverside; Foreign Missions, Dr. F. W. Russell of Berkeley; Christian Education, Dr. W. H. Otoby of San Anselmon; Ministerial Relief and Sustentation, James Marwick of Santa Barbara. Next year California will meet in Asilomar for ten days in August and the Synod of Arizona will convene at Miami in October. There were nearly 1000 delegates at the Pasadena meeung. Automobile rides entertained synodical visitors. Women of the state had a large part, holding daily meetings during the week to discuss the mission objects under their control. "Synod was really a religious university," said Mr. Gibbs. "There were 27 classes held every morning under the lead of specialists, discussing various phases of missions and church methods. These classes were largely attended by both men and women." Recommendation was made that the pension of ministers be $1000 instead of the present $600 and 1922 COIN CROP IS COMPLETE FAILURE WASHINGTON, July 28. — The 1922 coin crop a complete failure. American pockets are so full of silver that there will be no nickels, dimes, quarters, or half-dollars coined this year, F. E. Scobey, director of the mint, announces. As for pennies, only a paltry $70,000 worth have been coined at the Denver mint, as against $492,000 worth the preceding year. "There have been approximately $46,000,000 worth of pennies coined since the mint began in 1792," said Mr. Scobey. "So what's the use of making more, when about the only things you can still buy with a penny now-a-days are lollypops?" This is the first time in 108 years that half dollars have not been coined; the first time in 93 years that no quarters have been coined; the first time in 97 years that no dimes have been coined; with the exception of the year 1877, the first time in 57 years that no nickels have been coined; and with the exception of the years 1815 and 1823, the first time since the beginning of the mint in 1793, 129 years ago, that so few pennies have been coined. NO ORANGE-CO BABE NEED BE HOMELESS The following classified advertisement was published in The Plain Dealer this week: "Wanted—Someone to take care of eight-months-old baby girl for several weeks." Todate, there have been more than 20 replies, many coming to The Plain Dealer office in person to see if they could not get the tiny mite for their home. Some confessed they had already adopted children and were anxious to get another. One Fullerton girl of 17, who keeps house for her father and brother, phoned that she certainly would like the opportunity to take care of that baby. A woman of 45, with four grown children, sald she wanted a baby about the house; that if she had the money she would establish a large home for children. All of which demonstrates that no Orange-co baby need go without a good home. Women of the state had a large part, holding daily meetings during the week to discuss the mission objects under their control. "Synod was really a religious university," said Mr. Gibbs. "There were 27 classes held every morning under the lead of specialists, discussing various phases of missions and church methods. These classes were largely attended by both men and women." Recommendation was made that the pension of ministers be $1000 instead of the present $600 and that the denomination seek $30,000,000 endowment for this purpose to enlarge the present goal of $10,000,000 now nearly reached. Several speakers at the meeting emphasized the important place which home missionaries had in the activities of the church. Efforts are to be made to present the opportunities of home missionary work to young men in high schools and colleges. Speakers from New York and Philadelphia, representing various boards of the church, were on the program during the week.
