BARDIN BIG BOOST TO PUENTE HILLS
With Oil Operators
The Puente Hills got a real boost when the Jose Oil Co.'s (Bardin) well started producing last week. The well is making considerable oil accompanied with some water and has demonstrated beyond any doubts that the new field has possibilities and that H. A. Bardeen the man who has worked for more than a year should be given a lot of credit for what he has accomplished. It is believed that when the José Oil Co.'s well gets under finished production conditions it will make a 125 or 150 barrel well.
About 300 barrels seems to be the settled production of the Chansler-Canfield's discovery well Del Amo No. 1 at Redondo. A 300 barrel however is no discouragement to the field by any means when it is recalled the Standard's discovery wells at both Montebello and Huntington Beach.

SATURDAY NITE FOR WESTMINSTER ABBEY
LONDON, July 28.—Westminster abbey is going to have its first bath for many a year.
Prominent experts in old wood carving of the Gothic and Norman periods have discovered a preparation which can be run over the wood of old choir stalls and on the alabaster of tombs which will take off years of dirt without harming the beautiful work, bringing to light the wonderful color effects of the old paints beneath the dirt layers.
A preparation of lime, which will give the historic abbey the effect of having been whitewashed when first applied will be painted on the outside stone work of the abbey to clean the gray stone back to its original colors. At present the outside is in places black.

LONG BEACH FIELD
GREATEST IN WEST
With Oil Operators
The outlook for Signal Hill becoming one of the biggest oil fields ever developed in the West could not be better. In fact operators are beginning to wonder where the boundaries of the field will be fixed, and there is some feeling and it is not unfounded either that Signal Hill is going to produce too much oil. Every time a well is brought in it starts off all the way from 2 to 3 thousand barrels, and these wells are holding up in a remarkable manner. Signal Hill now has the largest average well production for its age of any field that California has developed.
The Petroleum Midway's Fields No.1 the outpost well of the northwest side of the field has come to more than expectations. This well made a production test flow of a 1000 barrels. Soon after it started to flow the water broke in and it will be necessary to make a re-cementing. The Petroleum Midway has purchased the northwest front of the field out a mile from production and proves the existence of oil in a locality a year ago considered a joke. The work of the Petroleum Midway has caused a big stir and has brought such operators into this section of the field as E. J. Miley, Joseph R. Dabney, the Hub Oil Company and the John P. Mills Organization.
New wells at Long Beach seem to be just a matter of course and unless they come in around 2 or 3 thousand barrels they are not noticed. The General Petroleum's success at Signal Hill continues unbroken. B. & S. No.1 at 3246 started off at 3100 barrels. The famous Black-Drake No.1 at 2655 is cleaned of all junk and is making new hole in the oil sand.
A. T. Jergins found a good place to re-cement and set pipe in the City Reservoir well. Drilling on to 3045 the well showed plenty of evidences of production and as soon as the shut off is made the city of Long Beach will get another big increase in its oil revenues.
The Oceanic Oil Company is scheduled to do something big and good for the field, Oceanic No.2 drilling a quarter of a mile due north of present production is getting some very nice and favorable showings at 3000 feet.
PASTOR ESTABLISHES CHURCH LIBRARY
ST. LOUIS, July 20.—Willing to run the risk of losing a volume from his library now and then, the Row Dwight L. Bradley, minister of the Congregational church in Webster Grove, Mo., has established what he calls a "loan library." Upon a table in the church vestibule are placed each Sunday certain books chosen for their timeliness and general interest. They belong to the minister. They are selected with the view to presenting the best current literature dealing with every important phase of life, treated constructively. The types vary from a recent anthology of modern poetry to the latest report of the Chemical Foundation. Along with the "loan library" there goes a program of publicity and suggestion. When the pastor preaches a "book sermon" a 300-word review or analysis is printed in the church calendar. This review is also pasted into the fly leaf of the book. The person who takes the book thus has the preacher's point of view and can read the first pages with a general preparation in mind.
NOVEL BELGIUM FEST TO GAIN HUSBANDS
BELGIUM, July 20.—On Monday, June 5, this neat little quarry town celebrated the annual festival of the Spinsters club.
"The marriageable men of the whole world" are informed, on responding to the invitation to participate in the festival, that they "will not get a wife by standing there sucking their thumbs."
The Spinsters' club was formed some 15 years ago for the express purpose of making matrimonial propaganda on behalf of its members; the chief means being an invitation to all beachelors to come and choose a wife at Ecaussinnes on White Monday.
Sargum Sproutings
Hello Folks:
There is a sign on Lincoln-ave that reads: For Sale, ticket to Kansas City, Mo.—$20.00 and horse.
We take it that the party that has the ticket for sale does not enjoy rail road accommodations. The dash would indicate that $20.00 and a horse is the price wished for the ticket.
The $20.00 is alright but, gosh, there are horses and other horses. The party didn't say whether they wanted a saddle horse, driving horse, race horse or what kind.
May be he is a horse trader and expects to make a fortune twist here and Kansas City swapping horses.
If he is going to ride to Kansas City on a horse's back he should have added a feather bed to be on the safe side for some horses need considerable padding before the rider can enjoy that mode of travel.
Any way if you have an old horse and $20.00 there's your chance to trade for a perfectly good ticket to Kansas City, Mo. If you do not own a horse, I know where you can get one for $1.37½, which would make your ticket cost you $21.37½ which is very reasonable considering the high cost of R. R. fares.
Yours resp.—SARGUM SPROUT.
