SIGNAL HILL OIL
PRODUCTION JUMPS
With the Oil Operators
The production of Signal Hill was boosted another 8000 barrels during the past week. Four new wells made this increase, the Henderson Petroleum Company's Helen de L., the Coast States No. 1, and the Shell Company's Cherry Hill No. 2 and Church No. 1 redrilled. The Coast States Oil Co.'s No. 1 came in at 3160 a 2000 barrel well, started showing some emulsion and was pinched back to 700. Henderson Petroleum Helen de L. completed at 3230 is flowing 2300 barrels with ease. The Signel's Cherry Hill No. 2 completed at 3280 is good for 2300 and the Church well has a capacity of 800 barrels.
The Holmes Oil Company did not get into a gusher production with their No. 1 recently completed at 3185. The well failed to do anything at flowing and it was put on the pump, and is making between 250 and 300 barrels.
A. T. Gergins the man who is scheduled to make Long Beach the taxless city is not meeting with all the success that would insure his schedule. The city well on the reservoir site drilled the cement off at 2806 and was found to be wet. Drilling ahead has been carried to over 2900 feet. The new drilling has shown some oil. Jergins stands a chance of getting into trouble with the Mining Bureau in going ahead and drilling so much hole and in formation that shows oil without first getting a water shut off.
Jones-Wooley No. 2 and the Marine Oil Corporations No. 2 are ready to go on production. Jones-Wooley completed at 3292 has been showing a lot of gas and oil and it is believed it will duplicate the Shell Co.'s Jones No. 1 without any trouble. The Marine's No. 2 at 3197 stopped drilling in the oil sands and showed sufficient "pay" stuff to produce at least a 1000 barrels.
The United Oil Company has a bill billed to start a new order of things on Signal Hill started its developing emulsion at the rate of 40 percent of the production. Complet
Jones-Wooley No 2 and the Marine Oil Corporations No. 2 are ready to go on production. Jones-Wooley completed at 3292 has been showing a lot of gas and oil and it is believed it will duplicate the Shell Co.'s Jones No.1 without any trouble. The Marine's No.2 at 3197 stopped drilling in the oil sands and showed sufficient "pay" stuff to produce at least a 1000 barrels.
The United Oil Company has a well billed to start a new order of oils on Signal Hill started its developing emulsion at the rate of 40 percent of the production. Completed at 3285 the initial production was variously estimated all the way from 3 to 5 thousand barrels. The big well flowed but a short time however water started to develop, and it appears now that it will be necessary to back in and shut off water. The Hass well undoubtedly has the making of a big producer and it will be a comparatively short matter to locate the water and put the well on clean production.
E. J. Miley, one of California's most careful, conservative and successful operators, has gone out on the northwest front of the Signal Hill field and taken a lease on property near the Petroleum Midway's fields well, and will begin operations at once. The fact that the Petroleum Midway struck oil in the Fields well and that E. J. Miley has gone in would leave little doubt about the possibilities of this section of the field.

REMODEL FIELD
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 13—Workmen already have begun remodeling the athletic field of the hand-some Fluminense club for the coming Olympic games to be held during the Brazilian centennial, which opens next September.
The government has appropriated 1,300 contos or reis ($325,000 at normal exchange) for this purpose. When completed the new field will and to Balboa is expected to follow.
The construction of the Coast Highway between Long Beach and Huntington Beach has been delayed for a considerable period of time on account of right-of-way difficulties. The last agreements in connection with the right-of-way, however have been entered into and unless something unforeseen occurs weshould be able to call for bids on this section of highway within the next few weeks. The money for its construction is available and I anticipate no further delay in connection with this stretch of highway.
"Following this, we expect to proceed with the section between Huntington Beach and Balboa.
"Very truly yours,
N. D. DARLINGTON,
"Chairman."

TRAIN AVIATORS TO DIRECT GUN FIRE
WASVHINGTON 13—Naval aviation students at the Pen-saola air station are now given a post-graduate course, which gives them actual practice in "spotting" an innovation just put into effect making it possible for them to be trained under conditions similar to fleet service.
One of the most important functions of a naval aviator is to act as the eyes of the fleet gunners observing and controlling the fire.Flying high up over the scene of action he is in an ideal position to view the splash of the battleship's salvos and to signal down what corrections must be made so as to bring the shells into the enemy fleet.
