SEAL BEACH WELL
FAILS AT SHUTOFF
With Oil Operators
Henry R. Dabney's Seal Beach well got a temporary set back in failing to get an initial shut off on the water at 3035. The well has been re-cemented and showed a lot of good oil sand in the bottom of the hole at 3042. The showing seems to leave little doubt now about Seal Beach. The Seal Beach Oil Company is looking for a suitable landing place to set casing and will probably cement at about 3000 feet.
The Standard Oil Company has the honor of drilling the deepest test well ever drilled in the Richfield district. The Standard's Kellogg No. 2 is now at 5665 in hard grey sand. The indications for production are not at all encouraging. They grey sand has been running for over 400 feet and unless a change takes place soon there can be little hope for a well. The Standard will satisfy the deep sand enthusiast of Richfield.
The Union Oil Company's Dickson No. 1 enjoys the distinction of being the deepest well actually making production in Southern California. Dickson No. 1 was recently completed at 4800 feet and is pumping about 200 barrels of fluid a quarter of which is oil of good gravity.
In the Whittier field the La Habra Midway and the Southern Cal. Oil Company are doing the wild cat work. Both wells are getting down to a point where a change for the better would be welcomed. The La Habra Midway well has passed the 3700 mark and is not showing any special indications of oil. The Southern California's Sanderson has been held up with a fishing job at 3900 feet, but is now getting by and will be drilling new hole in a few days. The outlook for a producer on the Son. Cal. is not en-encouraging at all now. However, there is a chance of getting something good at 4200 and it is understood that there is a ::game" bunch behind the Southern California Oil Company.

GERMANY EATS
REAL 'HOT DOGS'
BERLIN, July 13.—"Hot dogs," is right.
Official reports say that 5,500 real barking dogs were transformed into Germany's "hot dog" supply last year. That only counts the ones that passed the slaughter houses, not those that were home-butchered.
The same reports say that 149,000 horses went the same way into "hot dogs" against only about 6,000 a year before the war. In prewar days, there is no official record of any dogs reaching the sausage grill.

German writers say that this consumption of horse and dog meat in Germany shows that Germany's prosperity cannot be judged by the food served in the hotels, but that Germany is so poor that the poor cannot get any meat save dog and horse meat.

MOST WONDERFUL MEMORY KNOWN
BERLIN, July 13.—Julius Schrader, an official of the Prussian state library, has the most wonderful memory on earth, Germans claim.
He recently repeated the weather reports issued in Berlin since 1885, word for word, before a committee with the reports in their hands.
His memory covered a period of 14,000 days. He made not one mistake.

BRAZIL TO REPLACE PAPER WITH COIN
RIO DE JANEIRO., July 13.—The dirty, ragged notes of one or two mil rels, curse of Brazilian moneydom, are to be replaced by copper and aluminum coins during the present year according to financial circles.
This information is greeted with delight in all circles, for it is doubtful if there exists in the world more dilapidated money than the Brazilian small notes.
Despite the fact that these are continually replaced by the Calixa de Amortissacao, so great is the circulation and so cheap the quality of paper on which the notes are printed that most of them are little more than rags and tatter that cause all sorts of quarrels where smill commercial transactions are concerned.
At present there are no less than five different sets of one mil rels notes in circulation, so many that in the interior peasants refuse to accept some of the rarer prints on grounds they are counterfeit.
U. S. GETS $12,000,000 CHECK
Washington.—The United States Shipping Board has received a check for $12,000,000 from the British Ministry of Shipping, covering all transport claims growing out of the war. Great Britians claim for $25,000,000 was settled at the same time.

TRAVELS THRU AIR
Most first class mail leaving Los Angeles for eastern points travels by airplane considerable part of the way a fact that is not realized by most people. A letter leaving Los Angeles on Union Pacific train No. 4 at 8 p.m. Monday for Chicago, will reach its destination at 11 a.m. the following Thursday—exactly 24 hours ahead of the train upon which it left Los Angeles.
A new arrangement of schedules on the part of postal authorities and the Union Pacific have made this a regular practice, according to Guy Adams of the rail and express service of the Union Pacific System, and Charles Rager, of the Post Office Railway Mail Service. From Los Angeles mail is carried to Salt Lake City on the Union Pacific, where it is quickly transferred to waiting airplanes and carried to Chyenne, Wyoming. At this junction the mail from No. 4 train overtakes Union Pacific train No. 20, which left Los Angeles at 4 p.m. Monday. The mail is then carried from Chyenne to Omaha by train and from Omaha to Chicago by airplane.
Thus, two of the main jumps in the transcontinental service are made by the air route. There is no direct touch by airplane service with Los Angeles, however. No extra charge is made for carrying a letter by mail from Los Angeles—the regular 2c stamp being sufficient. It is unnecessary, also, to designate at this point a desire to have letters carried by airplane.
