NEW RACING CAR
“NEW DEPARTURE”
Two and thirty-two hundredths by three and fifty-four hundredths.
This merest detail, standing by itself, means nothing to the people—but it speaks worlds to automobile manufacturers, and particularly those who are interested in the building of racing cars. It is introducing the latest in racing cars, the 123 cubic-inch motor, the first one heard of in California racing circles. These are the cylinder dimensions, bore and stroke of the newest French design and construction.
Imagine, if you can, a power plant that is as small, if not smaller, than a great number of motorcycles engines—and then imagine that same power plant pushing a racing car over the speedway at upwards of a hundred miles an hour. And despite the fact that Southern California racing fans who have seen the 183 cubic-inch jobs perform on the Los Angeles racing plant at Beverly Hills and on other California tracks may seem a bit dubious as to the possible result, the manufacturers seem to know their business.
The car will weigh, it is believed, in the neighborhood of 1200 pounds or about 800-900 pounds less than the 183-inch jobs which can be taken as an average save for the small four-cylinder Frontenac, which weigh approximately 1650 pounds. The seating capacity, however, is but for one; no mechanic will be carried or needed, save in the pits.
This introduction to American racing fans is expected to take place sometime during 1923, and presumably at the time of the Indianapolis classic, for which the date is unknown as yet.
ENFORCE PROHI LAW
COVINA, July 88.—Demand that the police enforce the prohibition law and the good morals ordinance was made last night at a mass meeting here. George Rinehart, a former prohibition leader in the State, spoke.
Efficiency System Is Bringing Results
The Anaheim Automobile Co., Buick agents who have just completed the entire re-organization of their business under the direction of Chas. G. Darrach, Jr., efficiency expert, are now thoroughly equipped to render 100% service.
“The installation of a complete accounting and cost system, as a first and necessary step towards making our service as nearly perfect as possible was accomplished some time ago.” Will Goodrum, president of the company, stated.
“This was followed by a meeting of all our force, at which time the objects we had in mind were fully explained to all, together with an explanation as to the functions that proper accounting system performed in bringing the operations of all departments into complete harmony with each other. Following this meeting, each department was taken in hand and thorough trained so that they could efficiently follow out the plans which had been devised. Various scales of bonuses were put into effect, in order to encourage the men, and the result has been an increase of business in every department a tremendous increase in the enthusiasm of member of the force, and many compliments from customers and others who have had occasion to compare the present service with what they have previously been accustomed to.
It will give me great pleasure to give any of my friends and acquaintances in the industry any details in regard to what has been accomplished thru the installation of the modern efficiency methods which we have put into force, and to assist them in every way possible in securing the same service, as I feel that the upbuilding of the automobile industry in Orange County will be of great benefit to all engaged in that line of work.”

Battery Needs Most of Juice, Says Ennis
It is difficult for the motorist today to carry himself back 10 or 12 years, to the time when all cars were cranked by hand and when the most powerful headlights were dependent upon acetylene gas for their brilliancy.
But let the battery go "bad" and let the average man get out to crank his car on a rainy night, with the road ankle-deep in mud, and he will realize how deeply he is indebted to the storage battery for much of his motoring comfort.
Not only is his engine started and his way illuminated at the touch of a button, but numerous other conveniences have been added which, a few years ago would have been considered foolish flights of the imagination.
Many of the luxurious dens of today are equipped by the manufacturers with electric cigar lighters, electric step illuminators and numerous other electrical appliances that add to the comfort and joy of motoring.
Where such appliance are standard equipment, installed by the manufacturer of the car, it can be taken for granted that they do not make too great a demand on the capacity of the storage battery. The car designers have seen to that.
But some car owners add so many electrical contrivances that, in the aggregate, they are a heavy drain on the battery. This is sometimes one of the reasons for its apparent inability to retain a charge.
Manager Ennis of the local Exide Service Station—Automotive Electric Co., says on the subject, "Heating devices of any kind, such as electric vulcanizers, electric cigar lighters, electric steering wheel wamers, etc. consume far more current than does the ordinary light bulb.
"And with the average owner using his car in the winter only for short runs—very often at night—his generator can only put into his battery a limited amount of electrical energy. If there is added, too many electric appliances which consume current in excess of what the designers intended should be drawn from the battery, it is easy to see what will happen. It is the old case of "Burning the candle at both ends". It simply can't be done for any length of time.
"These various electric appliances are good things. They add to the joy and convenience of motoring. But before too many are added, it would
