CROWD WILL ATTEND AUTO TRADES MEET Scores of automobile distributors and sub-distributors, particularly members of the Orange-co Auto Trades Ass'n, will attend the banquet and convention of the southern division of the State Auto Trades association, to be held at the Hotel Maryland on Monday and Tuesday. Three such division meetings are held during the year, one for the northern section of California, another for the central and a third for the southern. The banquet, to be held at the Hotel Maryland, is expected to bring together some of the leading lights in the industry and distribution in the southland. Among the speakers at the meetings will be Percy Chamberlain, formerly of Denver, who is credited with inaugurating the flat rate system on repairs to higher-priced cars. Chamberlain is a writer for automobile magazines and an unusually live man. Another speaker will be Bob Martland, secretary-manager of the state organization. It is hoped to obtain Gordon Lee, head of the automobile division of the United States department of commerce, for an address on the use of autos in commerce. The Auto Club of So. Cal. also will be represented. Pullen Out of Racing Game? It’s Not Likely Is Eddie Pullen going to give up the agency of the Hassler shock absorber in Los Angeles, and is the car being built for him a Lincoln? These are some of the questions being asked in racing circles. Pullen is keeping mum. It is believed here that Pullen will not devote himself exclusively to racing again and that the car he is having made is a special. Pullen is known to be an enthusiastic about the Lincoln, whose perfect mechanism without superfluous fancies, and behavior in seemingly impossible situations, appeal to hismanship. Pullen was no exception when he branched off as he did after giving up racing, it is pointed out. Barney STAGE CO. ASKS DAMAGES July 1, beginning at nine a.m., has been set for the trial of Miss Edna Love and O. Divers, both of Los Angeles, who are made the defendants in a civil suit for damages filed by the Crown Stage Line. A. B. Watson, president of the line, asks $114.09 damages which he alleged was suffered by a stage that lost two wheels in a collision near Westminster April 16. Clyde Bishop is attorney for Watson and S. B. Kaufman for Miss Love and Divers. A charge of reckless driving was dismissed on motion of Deputy District Attorney D. G. Wattlin by a jury in Judge J. B. Cox's court. DUNTON'S SALES MOUNT George Dunton, Ford, Fordson and Lincoln distributor, continues to smash records this month. To date he has delivered 30 new and 23 used Fords, four new and one used tractor, and a Lincoln phacton to H. E. Becker, of the Union Oil Co. at Brea. He has 25 unfilled orders for Fords. Two Shops Merged In Automotive Electric The equipment of two shops combined, and the whole thing in charge of a man 'with 10 years' experience with the electrical parts and system of automobiles and a life-long general electrical experience. This describes the new Automotive Electric Company which G. H. Ennis has purchased. Ennis has taken the name of the concern and dropped the other, which was the Ennis Electric Service. The new proprietor claims that he has the most efficient battery charging set in the city, and can test any kind of a battery and re-charge it if necessary. Besides the agency for the Exide and U. S. The shop is the official service station for the Auto-lite, Bijur, Briggs & Stratton, Connecticut, Elseman Westinghouse and Tillotson carburetors. Ennis has built up an excellent business since he came here several months ago. Until recently his shop was located in the building of Turton & Lumsdon, Maxwell and Chalmers distributors. Goodyear Cords Make Good Shock Absorbers SIGNPOSTING WORK BOOSTING TRAVEL There are thousands of automobile parties entering Southern California at the present time over the transcontinental highways, according to a report just issued by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Motorists of this part of the state are themselves largely responsible for this unusual activity in cross-continent touring on account of their support accorded to sign-posting operations which have so marked the "long, long trails" that he who tours may read as he runs. Five of the long trails are at this time in full blast, discharging travel into the counties of the southern part of the state. Over the Bankhead-Borderland route through the states of the south motor travel is pouring into San Diego and thence distributing itself over the state. The National Old Trails Highway through the middle west is discharging heavy travel into the central counties. The Arrowhead Trail is bringing its heavy quota from the Lincoln Highway at Salt Lake City, while the Pacific Highway is attracting hundreds every month from the northwestern corner of the United States. Recent signposting work carried on by the Auto club, which is supported by the motorists of Southern California is considered by state authorities as the greatest stimulus to the heaviest long distance motoring wheel of the Mercer No. 4 when he blew a tire while rounding the fatal Death Curve at the Santa Monica road race in 1916 and attacked a fence. Below Pullen is seen crashing into the fence. The other picture sees him seated in his Ford coupe. Studebaker Internal Hot Spot Is Unique Of the many improvements and inventions embodied in this engine, the ingenious arrangement of intake manifold and Internal Hot Spot for obtaining maximum power from low-grade fuels—a Studebaker invention fully covered by patents—deserves and will command the greatest attention and the widest interest, says Harry D. Riley, northern Orange-co. Studebaker distributor. The power derived from an internal combustion engine results from the explosive force of the ignited gas against the top of the piston. This force is created by the expansion of the gas when its temperature is suddenly raised by the chemical reaction of combustion, which is commonly called explosion. Combustion or explosion is induced by the application of an electric spark to a highly sensitive and unstable gas. It is obvious that this explosive force, and the consequent power of the engine, depends largely upon the quantity of gas present in the combustion chamber when ignition takes place, and that this quantity varies directly with the temperature of the gas and is greatest when heat is sufficient for complete vaporization, but no more. The application of heat to the intake manifold through stoves, ordinary types of hot spots, ere., as com- (Continued on page three) Goodyear Cords Make Good Shock Absorbers "Out of Placerville, California, motor trucks on Goodyear cord tires maintain an express service to and from Sacramento, 50 miles distant, and, in the summer they also cross the summit of the Sierra to Lake Tahoe, 61 miles away, over gravel roads decidedly rough in places. "The line is operated by the El Dorado Transportation Company, the owner of which, F. H. Fitzlaff, reports many advantages obtained from the Goodyear cord tires that have succeeded the solid tires previously used," the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. of Calif., says, according to Nenno & Bock, local distributors. "The cushioning and nimbleness of the pneumatics enable the hauling of delicate vegetables and other perishables. The slowness of solid tires formerly shut out this source of revenue. Large quantities of eggs were broken on the solid tires, but very little damage of this kind occurs on the pillow Goodyear cord tires. A noticeable difference also has been noted in the slinkage of livestock hauled to a slaughter house in Sacramento—hogs and cattle now arrive more smoothly, quickly and hence in better condition. "On the easy-rolling Goodyear cord tires the trucks are sparing in use of gasoline and oil—one averaging 7½ miles per gallon of gasoline and 200 miles per gallon of oil. And the pneumatics save truck-wracking shocks and resulting repairs; one truck has covered 45,000 miles without repair expense. In other words, the record is quite typical of the general experience of rural users of Goodyear cord tires." NASH TO FULLERTON MAN The Bob White Company this week delivered a Nash four to Charles Roney of Fullerton. Humming birds are so called because the vibration of their wings makes a humming noise. Recent signposting work carried on by the Auto club, which is supported by the motorists of Southern California is considered by state authorities as the greatest stimulus to the heaviest long distance motoring trekking ever seen in America. Although the club sign-posting system has apparently reached a state of perfection, according to many observers, it is stated by officials of the organization that extensive improvements are planned for the near future. Studebaker Man Sweeps Rival's Floor Joseph Donovan of Boston enjoys the distinction of having attracted probably the largest and most distinguished crowd that ever gathered to watch any man wield a broom. It was so great, in fact, that it tied up traffic in the city of Cleveland for an hour. In sweeping the Cleveland salesroom floor, Donovan, who is the Studebaker dealer in Boston, carried out one of the novel stipulations of a sales contest which his forces had arranged with the Studebaker sales organization in Cleveland. It was agreed that the loser journey to the city of the winner, armed with a mammoth broom, and that he not only perform the sweeping act but also play the role of host at a dinner to the victorious sales forces. Among the prominent Clevelanders in attendance at the dinner were: Mayor Fred. Kohler; Paul J. Lamb, director of law; L. E. Skeel, prosecuting attorney; Thomas G. Martinec, director of public safety; W. E. Greenland, former lieutenant-governor of Ohio; F. H. Goff, president Cleveland Trust Co.; Charles Farmsworth, vice-president Union Trust Co., and Frank A. Shepherd, president Home Savings and Trust Co. From the Studebaker headquarters in South Bend, those in attendance included F. S. Fish, chairman of the (Continued on Page Two) VIEW OWN COUNTRY FIRST, CLUB URGES See your own county first, Mr. Motorist. Road conditions for mid-summer touring throughout Southern California are reported good by the touring bureau of the Automobile club of Southern California. This is true particularly in regard to the routes leading to the various resort sections of the southern counties, and not forgetting the national parks which include Sequoia and General Grant as well as Yosemite. Every county at the present time, says the Auto club, has its own pleasure spot, and motorists are urged to patronize these local resorts as much as possible. The club is urging a "see your county first" campaign throughout Southern California, just as the sentiment has grown to see America first. It is pointed out that after the auto owners of each county become thoroughly acquainted with the beauties of their own section, so that they can talk intelligently about them, then it will be time enough to fly to other environments. Many motorists, it is said, do not know a thing about the beauties their own county has to offer, and they always think that a greater joy lies "just over the hill". To discount this growing unrest the Auto club is urging the See Your County First idea locally, so that the entire United States may confide to know Southern California from the enthusiasm of its own residents. This is best promoted by close co-operation with the residents of each county working in harmony, it is pointed out. After you learn your own county, then see Southern California as a whole, say the club officers. If it's from Witman's it's good. ealer GE COUNTY Automobile Section TWENTY-SIXTH YEAR BUICK MECHANISM CORRECT ALWAYS Perhaps the biggest advantage in buying a Buick car is that you get a Buick valve-in-head motor and properly related chassis. Next to that is the range of selection which enables you to choose the type of car that exactly fills your needs to passenger capacity and other service requirements, says Bill Goodrum, Buick distributor. Buick engineers have kept one point constantly in mind in designing both the sixes and roues; namely, that no matter for what purpose a car is to be used, to give perfect satisfaction it must be thoroughly sound mechanically. And that accounts for the correctness of the new four-cylinder cars. In mechanical excellence, the fours are the equal of the sixes; in appearance, they possess the same beauty, the same graceful lines and refinements. While Model 22-Four-34 is intended for a two-passenger roadster, it can accommodate three comfortably, so roomy and spacious is the driving compartment. Ample storage space directly behind the seat, as well as beneath the rear deck, makes room for personal and business effects. The inclined windshield affords clear vision and prevents the elements beating in between the sections or along the cowl. This feature, with the tailored side curtains that open and close with the doors, affords comfort and protection nearly equal to that of a sedan. LOT OF ROAD WORK IN COUNTY The north half mile of the mile of road improvement between Buena Park and Northam Station was completed this morning and part of the detour abolished. George Curtis, the Los Angeles contractor, is expected to finish the work next Tuesday, according to County Engineer J. L. McBride. Next Monday Wells & Bressler of Santa Ana will finish pouring the concrete for the three miles of new paving on the Boisa boulevard between Santa Ana and Huntington Beach. The road will be open again in three weeks or sooner. The two miles of road on the Huntington Beach boulevard between the Westminster and Talbert boulevards will be completed within two weeks. The paving of the two and one-half miles between El Modena and the County park is progressing fast and pouring will be finished next Tuesday. More graveling of roads is being done by the county engineer's office. From leather upholstery to the smallest details, it has everything that can be asked for in a car of its type. We have made lots of friends with the new Ajax tires. They will become an old friend to you if you try them." So says James, the Vulcanizer. With the best Para rubber obtainable in their composition, and a carcass with layers of pure rubber alternating with layers of fabric, this tire can withstand even extraordinary stone bruises. A Dodge purchaser tried out 16 different tires on the same model and found the Ajax the most satisfactory of them all. The Ajax ranks high with the Federal bureau of standards, which repeatedly has purchased them for use in the Canal Zone. Witman, Eyesight specialist. TO LOWER MODJESKA GRADE It will be good news to autoists to learn that the 35 per cent grade on Modjeska hill, from Madame Modjeska's home, will be cut nine per cent and gravelled by County Engineer J. L. McBride. The grade is more than a quarter of a mile long. Motor Cars Are Built Better than cars that cost more— Built Better than cars that cost more— A careful examination of the construction of Studebaker cars will convince you that they have no duplicate in value in their respective price class. For instance, the machining of the crankshaft and connecting rods on all surfaces is a manufacturing practice that is found only on costlier cars. This particular operation is mainly responsible for the fine balance of Studebaker motors and their remarkable freedom from vibration at all speeds. It also has an important bearing on the wearing quality of the cars and on its long-lived dependable service. The exceptional values in a Studebaker is possible because practically every part that goes into the car is manufactured complete in Studebaker's own factories which ARE THE MOST MODERN IN THE WORLD. Parts-makers profits are practically eliminated. Important savings through better methods and bigger volume, permit greater value to the buyer. From the standpoint of SHREWD INVESTMENT you should find out why Studebaker offers so much more for your money in performance, service and economy. Studebaker equipment includes ventilator (best accessory ever installed on any automobile); thief proof transmission lock, reducing theft insurance 15% to 20 per cent; cord tires and many others.
