News of Fullerton FOUND GUILTY OF SELLING LIQUOR Walter J. Van Deest of Los Alamitos was given a jury nearing yesterday in Fullerton on the charge of selling liquor in his place of business and was found guilty. Sentence was held up until Saturday by Judge French. William P. Webb of Anaheim represented the defense, and D. C. Wettin, deputy district attorney, the state. This was the second time Van Deest had been given a jury bearing on liquor charges in Judge French's court. About a month ago he was tried on the charge of keeping liquor in a public place. The jury at that time disagreed, being ten for conviction and two for acquittal. He is to be given another hearing on the latter charge next week. START ON LIGHT SYSTEM The work on the new ornamental street lighting system in Fullerton is to begin soon, the bond having already been filed. The contract called for $27,000. Contractor Sparks of Los Angeles is in charge and has 150 days to complete the job. SUMMER BAND CONCERTS Summer band concerts start June 20 at the city park in Fullerton. From 20 to 25 musicians will take part. The concerts begin at 8 o'clock on Friday evenings. $50,000 BUILDING FOR WICKERSHELM A new $50,000 plant will be constructed by the Wickershelm Implement Co. on the present site on West Commonwealth ave. Plans are being prepared by M. Eugene Durfee. The building will be two stories in height with front 125 feet and 55 feet deep. It is to be an ultra-modern structure of brick, connecting up with the addition to the First National Bank building extension, and will almost finish the business block west of Spadra-rd. JACK SHAW WINNER BOY'S MOTOR TRUCK Jack Shaw, five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Snow, corner West and North-sts., is the winner of a contest in which the Kafeteria shoe store gives away a boy's auto truck. LASKER STUMPS MID-WEST WASHINGTON, June 23—Kansas, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and perhaps other agricultural states will be stumped by Chairman Albert Lasker in his fight for the pending ship subsidy bill. Lasker's object, he said, was to find out whether the farmers opposed the bill, as charged. ALL ENGLAND IN MOURNING LONDON, June 23.—All England is mourning the death of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, who was assassinated at the door of his home in Faton place by two young Irishmen, James O'Brien and James Connolly. The assassins were captured. YOUNG WOMEN TAKE VOWS Catholics of Anaheim and other Orange-co towns attended ceremonies this morning at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Santa Ana at which 19 young women further consecrated their lives to the sisterhood of the church. Bishop John J. Cantwell presided. These ceremonies ended the eight-day retreat of the young women at the Mother House-In Orange, making an epoch in the history of the church in Orange-co. Never before in a western town have young women taken vows in a church instead of the convent. O'DAY JAILED Charged with grand larceny in connection with the alleged removal of oil drilling equipment valued at $7,500 from the Sunrise Consolidated Oil Company's well near El Toro, J. W. O'Day was landed in the county jail too to await his trial, which is scheduled for Monday. His bondmen surrendered him to the sheriff Wednesday, following the announcement that his attorney had withdrawn from the case. ROTARY TO MEET FRIDAYS The board of directors of the Anaheim Rotary club have planned to hold their meetings every Friday morning at the Fairland Inn at 7:30 o'clock, taking their breakfast together. The board is composed of Harry D. Riley, president; Thomas McFadden, Rev. Thomas Walker, Dr. H. A. Johnston, Carl Leonard and S. C. Hartranft. SILVAS TRIAL JULY 5 The trial of Carlos Silvas, charged with having passed fictitious checks on Max Salschieder of Anaheim, was set for July 5, when he was arraigned before Judge R. Y. Williams in Santa Ana this morning. S. B. Kauffman of Santa Ana was appointed by the court to represent him. BERGER LEFT $10,000 Le Roy Berger local realty man, who recently died, left an estate of $10,000, according to a petition filed today in the court of Judge Z. B. West in Santa Ana in which letters of administration are sought. The petition was filed by Mrs. State News Briefs Prescott F. Cogswell, Los Angeles supervisor refuses to be a candidate for congress from the ninth district. After a lapse of more than five years the Yale of the Los Angeles Steamship Company's line came into port at San Diego, resuming the line's service. The voyage from Los Angeles was completed in five hours. A fierce forest fire has broken out near Democrat Hot Springs, in the Bakersfield region, and forest rangers, ranchers and power line employees in the Breckenridge range are busy fighting it, says dispatches from Bakersfield. State legislative candidates have been endorsed by the association for the Betterment of Public Service in Los Angeles. The Imperial valley is in terror lest the Colorado river flood the valley, said Mayor John L. Bacon of San Diego, before the House irrigation commission in Washington according to dispatches reaching Los Angeles. Bacon represented the California League of Municipalities. William H. Joyce has been elected president of the Association of Pacific Coast Joint Stock Land Banks, represented at Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Salt Lake City. He formerly was president of the Federal Land Bank of Berkeley. Four hundred Angelenos will attend the Pacific Coast Ad Clubs' convention at San Diego next week. BATTLESHIPS RESPOND SHANGHAI, China, June 23.—With Admiral Joseph Strauss, comanader of the United States Aslatic squadron here to direct them, three British and two American battle cruisers steamed up the Kan river today, answering the call from Christian missionaries, reported besieged by Chinese troops in the Lazariast mission. PROBATION FOR CHASE Charged with driving a car while intoxicated, Crith Chase was granted probation today in the court of Judge Z. B. West in Santa Ana. ORANGE MEN ESCAPE Frank Stewart, motorcycle officer of Santa Ana and M. N. Claypool, Santa Fe agent at Orange, narrowly escaped being drowned in the high tides and cross current at Newport Beach last night. They were rescued in a boat when almost exhausted by T. G. Carpenter. REALTY MEN AT LUNCHEON Anaheim Realty Men attended the luncheon of the Santa Ana Realty Board at St. Ann's Inn at Santa Ana today. Plans for the 1922 convention were discussed. C. C. C. Tatum, and Glenn Williams addressed the meeting.
