DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
There is nothing so melancholy as the operations of a man's mind who has become unsettled in his religious beliefs. It has no stability, it finds no abiding-place; it is restless and unsatisfied; it has no settled convictions, but is wandering hither and thither like the bird flying over the desert waste of water after the flood. Its only hope and safety is to return to a refuge of the ark.—Anonymous.
Seldom is a sultry night experienced in California.
Baseball is the national game, and also the national habit.
In jumping at conclusions you seldom grab a good one.
There is no reading more interesting or more entertaining than a stirring history.
No boy ever was handicapped in the race for the Presidency of the United States because of the fact that he has freckles.
The Ohio mother of a boy has a good time dreaming about seeing her son inaugurated President of the United States some day.
Russia is the reef upon which Europe's economic ship is grounded and is being pounded by the waves of depression and adversity.
Where there is one person who dies from overwork, there are a score who die from indolence and intemperance as to diet and outdoor exercise.
PROVES HERSELF HEROIC UNTO DEATH
Tales of exceptional heroism in ordinary life are frequent. Here is one that makes one's heart glow with pride: Miss Gilbert, head of the art department of the Minneapolis public library, was burned to death in a conflagration which destroyed the fashionable Lafayette Club. She could have saved herself. She could have been rescued. She refused to keep her life, because she would not leave the side of a crippled, invalid friend. She and the friend, to whom she gave the full measure of devotion, went to death locked in each other's arms.
The sordid materialist would say: "How foolish! What good resulted from this sacrifice?" From the stand point of selfish advantage, no good came of it. It made nobody richer, in dollars and cents. But does it not make all who read about it richer in spirit? Does it not make one proud to realize that there are human beings whose devotion, whose love for others, becomes so unselfish as to transcend love for their own lives? Miss Gilbert, the heroine, made an investment infinitely better by dying as she did than she could have given by living and serving as head of the art department of a public library.
GREAT FLEET BASE NEED ON THIS COAST
It is very gratifying to note that provision is made in the naval budget, for maintaining the Mare Island navy yard. Whether or not this particular yard is developed, there should be, somewhere along the California coast, one mammoth naval base, capable of accommodating the whole American fleet, if necessary.

Members of Congress collectively transact business in a manner that would shipwreck the private business interests of any member, if conducted as public business is.
Former President Wilson may not have recovered his health fully. But his vigor of denunciatory speech is up to the old standard, as Senator Reed, of Missouri, can testify.
The United States should nave an army and a navy ample to defend itself successfully, should it be attacked. To maintain adequate armament is not militarism, but common prudence.
California is a land of bold, grand scenery. There is little of the topography of the state that is tame and commonplace. The rugged, the gigantic, the sublime in Nature are the rule, not the exception, in this state.
GREAT FLEET BASE NEED ON THIS COAST
It is very gratifying to note that provision is made in the naval budget, for maintaining the Mare Island navy yard. Whether or not this particular yard is developed, there should be somewhere along the California coast, one mammoth naval base, capable of accommodating the whole American fleet, if necessary.
The Pacific is in far greater need of armed protection than the Atlantic. Indeed, any peril that might arise for this Nation at sea doubtless would be in the Pacific. It were wise, therefore, to recognize this fact and to arrange defensive armament accordingly.
To make this coast defensively impregnable is the acme of wisdom. So long as defensive armament on a big scale is needed, this country should keep its armed strength by land and sea up to the point of adequacy. To do otherwise would be the veriest folly.
In making up the naval budget, Congress is inclined to make a mare's nest of the Mare Island navy yard. Its usefulness is questioned in some quarters, but just as strongly defended in other quarters.
Life, in a way, resembles a slot-machine. One drops kindness and courtesy and fair-dealing into the slot, and one draws out a big package of pleasure and satisfaction.

Chemical analysis shows that all lubricating oils are composed of about 85% carbon and 15% hydrogen in chemical combination.
All lubricating oils form carbon when burned in the combustion chamber. The important thing to determine is the amount and kind of carbon formed by the oil.
Some oils form a good deal of carbon, some a small amount; some produce hard, flinty carbon which will cause a great deal of trouble; others produce a soft, flaky carbon that will do no damage.
The important factors determining the amount and kind of carbon formed by a lubricating oil are the crude from which it is made, the process and care of refining it, its purity and stability.
Advantages of Crude and Vacuum Refining
Great care is exercised in selecting the crudes from which Zerolene is made, to secure only those which contain the most desirable lubricating values and at the same time as little as possible, if any, of the undesirable hydrocarbons such as wax and asphaltum.
In selecting crudes for Zerolene, the Standard Oil Company has the advantage of its own large production of practically every type of crude oil. For this reason the company is not compelled to use any particular crude because it happens to be the only one available.
These selected crudes, carefully refined by our own patented, high-vacuum process, produce in Zerolene, oils of the highest lubricating value, which, when burned in the combustion chamber, develop a very small amount of carbon of a soft, flaky nature, which can do no harm and usually blows out entirely with the exhaust.

ALICE ADAMS' PRIZE NOVEL—Sioux City Tribune
It is cheering to find that the Pulitzer prize for the 1921 novel goes to Booth Tarkington's "Alice Adams" even though the award is not made strictly upon literary merit. The conditions are that the winning book must best portray "the wholesome atmosphere of American life and the highest standard of American manners and manhood." It is conceivable that a novel might fall in these particulars and yet be of exceedingly high quality as literature. But it by no means follows that a work which strikingly presents the wholesomeness and high standard of the American people cannot be at the same time excellent art. "Alice Adams" proves this quite adequately.
In an age seemingly obsessed with sex and its implications, Tarkington's novel shines forth like a crystal spring in a desert. Not that it is "moral," or "uplifting," or of the Pollyanna glad girl school, for it isn't. It deals straightforwardly with a situation which in itself is drab enough and depressing enough. It has not the traditional happy ending. Alice's father is a failure, her mother is nagging, her brother goes irretrievably to the bad, and she herself is left to work out her own destiny at the book's close. The picture is drawn with remarkable realism, but with a realism which does not overlook the silver amid the gray. Tarkington paints in the sunshine as well as the shadow.
Tarkington unquestionably has genius. The peculiar flavor which informs his work is fairly immitable.
The Tarkington touch is elusive when an alien hand seeks to impress it. Take his stories of adolescence. Other writers were quick to see the value of the field which he opened here. They flocked after him. After what have they garnered? Nothing but dross, for the most part. Charisternistically Tarkington looks up adolescence, the awakening of sex as comedy; and that is just what is in the normal boy and girl. If you must be convinced all one needs do is to turn to those writers of fiction who have treated it in a heartfierious, biological manner. They roam off the pathological clinic.
Most of our so-called realistic thrors could not write." Alice Adams" if indeed any of them could do so, is beyond their powers, for it is the work of a master craftsman. It serves the 1921 Pulitzer prize even more than Tarkington's "Magnificent Ambersons" deserved the prize for 1919.

cle in tonight's Plain Den20) about the effect that 10,000 kilowatt condenser on electric service may think that we will be continuous service to our Orange-co. We do not represent matters to our and will state that abso-lutely continuous service is an im-possibility owing to the fact that most of our power comes from the large water power stations on Big Creek which necessitates 300 miles of transmission lines. It is impossible for a line of this length to be operated without an occasional interruption because of varying weather conditions at different points along the line. However, we are trying to make our service as nearly continuous as possible by using duplicate transmission lines as nearly continuous as possible by using duplicate transmission lines and the interruptions to service when they do occur should be of short duration.
As Katella substation is tapped off this line, which extends from Big Creek to San Diego, we are so located that load conditions make it necessary to install this large condenser to boost up our voltage and keep it more steady. If we did not have this machine, as our load keeps increasing, the lights would burn dim, motors would run slower and warmer
