BIBLE CLASS HEARS NEAR EAST APPEAL
An address on the Near East relief was given yesterday morning before the Houser Bible class by Guy Talbot, recently returned from a trip thru the remains of what was formerly Asatic Turkey. He stated that conditions in that country are terrible, and that he saw people falling dead of starvation at the foot of Mt. Ararat in Armenia.
He also stated that the conditions in Constantinople are dreadful. The Turks were ousted from the city in the last war, and it has since been a neutral city for refugees from the other places. Once a refugee gets there he is safe insofar as open assault is concerned, but he is likely to starve. People dally drop on the streets of Constantinople from starvation, he said.
But his appeal is for the hundreds of thousands of children in the former Turkish empire, including Palestine, Eyria and Armenia who are dying of starvation. He said that there only hope is America. He said that sometimes people get the far east and the near east mixed. The far east includes China, Japan, Siam, India and the East Indies. The near east includes the Bible lands, and is the cradle of civilization.

Wally Reid Drives “Bug” 85 Miles an Hour!
WALLACE REID and MARY MAC LAREN in a scene from the Paramount Picture ‘Across the Continent’
An eighty-five mile per hour “bug!” This small car, perhaps the fastest for its size ever built, was especially constructed and equipped to hold the honor place in the trascontinental race which is the principal feature of Wallace Reid’s new Paramount picture, “Across the Continent,” to be presented at the California theatre tomorrow.
The machine is about the size of a stripped-down Ford. It was equipped with all the features of the racing cars, however, including Delco ignition system, Miller racing carburetor and Perfecto two-speed axle.
The car was geared three-to-one and was capable of attaining a speed of 85 miles per hour although, according to the star, it was hard to hold it to the road when it reached its maximum speed.
On the same program, LarrySemon, will known “monarch of mirth,” appears in his latest “rib-busting” comedy, “A Pair of Kings.” This picture is a riot from start to finish, and those who have witnessed it declare that it is the best thing Larry has turned oute. Come prepared to laugh the limit.
Reese will also entertain on the mighty Wurlitzer. He is becoming more popular each day.

Miss Wellman Returns From Study in N. Y.
Miss Luna Wellman returned Sunday evening from New York City after a year's study with the world's greatest woman pianist, Ethel Leginske. Madam Leginske, of international fame as pianist, composer, and artist teacher has been unanimously acclaimed the "Woman Paderewski."
Leginske who was a disciple of the great master, Leschetizky, has taken the best from his method, combining with it her own original genius, which has made itself evident in her own career and in the phenomenal success of her pupils in London, Boston and New York the stern critics have hailed her pupils as artists distinguished by their unsurpassed quality of tone. Not only are they distinguished by their velvety tone, but also by all the other requisites of true artists.
Recognizing the unusual talent of Miss Wellman, Leginske urged that she accompany her to Europe. Owing to a limited leave of absence from the faculty of the College of Music of the University of Southern California, she has returned to resume her teaching immediately. She will also offer a summer course at her studio in Anaheim, beginning Monday, June 26. Announcement will be made of the courses to be offered.

At the present time the state nurses convention in San Francisco is giving one entire day to welfare work, in which Miss Kuehl, community nurse, and Mrs. R. W. Balch, her ever ready assistant in welfare work, are in attendance.
Mrs. Fitzgerald goes to convention with the State endorsement of Senator Johnson's proposed amendment to abolish child labor throughout the country. This movement was also heartily approved at the state convention of Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher associations, held in San Diego recently.
The convention runs from June 19 to 30.

Under a beautiful arbor of flowers, constructed especially for the pretty occasion, Miss Hilda Meger became the bride of Mr. Arthur Hemmerling in the presence of the immediate relatives and close friends of the two at the home of the bride yesterday afternoon at four o'clock. She carried a bouquet of Cecil Bruner roses and baby's breath. She was attended by her sister, Miss Emma Meger, who was dressed in a becoming dress of pale green. Otto Meger, brother of the bride actetd as best man.
A sumptuous supper was served after the ceremony and late in the evening the couple slipped away from the group where they will enjoy a honeymoon to parts unrevealed. Upon their return they will reside in Anaheim.
