Saturday, June 17, 1922 JORDAN CAR IS SAFE ALL THRU, ALL OVER Almost every lever etc. on an automobile is useful in helping a driver to stop, if he knows how to use them. The makers of the Jordan have realized this in including such parts among the improvements made over the ordinary motor car. Here are the distinctive features of the car as compared with others, according to the J. E. Walter Company, distributors: Every nickel plated part has a foundation of brass. Steel rusts very quickly when exposed. Every exposed nut, bolt and fitting is rust proofed—then painted. Clutch and brake pedals stay black. New design accelerator stirrup is of aluminum. It's the filmsy frames, weaving and twisting that make the body builders trouble. The new Jordan deep frame has tubular torsional resisting cross members. The bodies do not gap at the door openings. The Jordan velvet spring shackle, the most happy feature on uniformly quiet car, is improved. Drop forged parts with water and dust proof metal boots. Leaky radiators are caused by undue strains. The new Jordan radiator is hung in a cradle, mounted snugly on corky gaskets. The transmission is new with a positive lock. That means dollars saved in insurance. Longer control lever. The clutch is of the latest design ENNIS PURCHASES AUTOMOTIVE ELEC. The name of the Ennis Electric Service has been dropped and the name Automotive Maintenance Company adopted by Ennis, who has purchased the latter concern and moved his shop to its quarters. With much more space and added facilities, Ennis expects to provide an even more complete and satisfactory service to his patrons than before. —none smoother or more positive. There's a new axle, the first of a new pattern produced by the world's greatest axle builders. Stronger—lubricated completely but non-leaking—silent. Rear wheels easily removed. There's the new gasoline tank, shaped to conform with frame. Shut off cock on the line. The new gas tank cap locks with one turn of the hand. Filler stations like it. No threads to bother. Lubrication is the life of the car. Now Jordan has built a car with scarcely a point where friction can wear. Alamite system protects thrust out. Pressure will put oil where gravity will not. But that's not enough for Jordan. A new independent lubricating system brings oil to inaccessible points under car. Nearly always neglected. Rear axles are mean things to reach. Flexible tubes, easily accessible for filling, do the trick. A new braking system. Levers cannot jump backward and forward on rough roads. Plain Dealer for Good Job Printing. The Frank P. A.-SALT LAKE RECORD SMASHED Smashing a record that has stood for five years a Nash six touring car, a standard stock model in every respect, last week negotiated the 853 miles between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City in the remarkably fast time of 26 hours, 21 minutes. This new mark cuts 7 hours and 5 minutes off the old time of 33 hours, 26 minutes, which has held since 1917, according to Bob White, local distributor. The Nash was driven by Charles H. Digelow, who laid out the famous L. A. to Phoenix course in 1907, and who competed in a Mercer in three Santa Monica road races at Indianapolis in 1911, in the Vanderbilt event on Long Island in 1910, and who drove the first car across country from New York to Los Angeles in 1910. Alternating with Bigelow at the wheel of the Nash six was Arthur B. Marshall, of the Troy Motor Sales Company mechanical apprentice, who drove the Nash last year in its record breaking runs to Bishop and Phoenix. R. J. Grawer of the Los Angeles Times staff rode as observer, while the times at start, finish and interview points was checked officially by representatives of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Following the route via San Bernardino Las Vegas, St. George, Cedar City, Nephi to Salt Lake City, the record breaking Nash maintained a high average of speed throughout the run in spite of the fact that fog and rain interfered between Los Angeles and Victorville and rain again on the last stretch of the journey into Salt Lake City. Only 120 miles of the entire distance is over hard surface roads, while 427 miles is through bleak and arid desert country, much of it one way track, with sand stretches, chuck holes, rocks and stair grades. Throughout this grind the Nash gave a wonderful demonstration of its ability to stand up under severe punishment and of the abilities of modern automotive engineers who have guided the advancement of automobile transportation. The run was made without tire or mechanical trouble of any kind, and at the finish in front of the New- Buss Concerns Prefer Willys-Knight Cars Recently we told how the Willys-Knight was used the year round by a stage plying between Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek in the Rockies, one of the most difficult trips particularly in winter, in all the world; Here is the other extreme, in which conditions practically parallel those of Orange County, with its fine boulevards, says Curtis Edwards, proprietor of the Mission garage, distributors. More than 60 per cent of the equipment of the Fifth Avenue busses is now Knight. Each one travels more than 100 miles a day, during which period it successfully negotiates several hundred strats and stops. It is operated at one-fourth less fuel cost than any other motor; it runs for longer periods without repair than any other; it needs no surplus equipment; it never develops any valve trouble; it requires less skill to overhaul it than does any other motor. One of the officials of the Company is authority for the statement that the Knight motors on the Fifth Avenue busses have traveled a total of 5,000,000 miles with practically no service attention. The Willys-Knight sleeve-valve motor has duplicated for itself the record of its cousin Knight in the Fifth Avenue busses. Taxicab service is another use about as rough and tough as a motor can possibly be put to. That's why the instantaneous recognition of the merits of the Willys-Knight sleeve-volute motor, achieved in Chicago and New York, have been sagratifying to The Willys-Overland Company. The La Salle Hotel, in Chicago, owns a fleet of 55 taxicabs; the Westcott Express Company, of New York, operates 162 of these cars. "In six months," says one of the owners, "and after the hardest kind of service, the motors have noticeably improved with use. During the war we should have been helpless if the motors had not stood the grind without the repair requirements common to most motors." 61 SUPERIORITY POINTS IN REO Sixty-one points of superiority of the new Reo six are enumerated by the manufacturers in a circular received by Dale & Egge, distributors for Orange county. Some of these points are: FLAT TUBE RADIATOR—Solid copper and brass throughout. One piece fins—frost proof. Flat tuber expand but do not open up through freezing. Practically indestructible. Reo made. STEERING ARMS—Forged integral with steering knuckles—instead of being made in two pieces which may loosen or let go. For many years an exclusive Reo feature. LYNITE (Alluminum Alloy) PISTONS—cost more but weigh less—won't score cylinders; won't hold carbon; smooth running and because of lightness, less wear on bearings. Cheaply made cars don't have them. Reo—and Rolls-Royce—do. PISTON RINGS—of two piece construction—two eccentric rings, pinned together and finished as one concentric ring. Give equal wall pressure and completely fill slots in pistons—cost twice as much, but worth it, because compression—hence power—is always uniform. FOUR BEARING CRANKSHAFT—with all bearings 2¼-in diameter. Every crank balanced for dynamic, as well as static conditions. No vibrations at any speed. Seventy-three square inches main bearing surface—one-third of total length of Reo crankshaft rests on the four main bearings. This is life insurance. SIX CYLINDER BLOCK—castings Cylinders accurately ground and each cylinder completely surrounded by water. If there is water in the radiator and oil in the reservoir you can't overheat this motor. GROUND CYLINDERS — reamed or rolled cylinders may be just as good, but Reo Engineers don't think so. Only argument we ever heard in favor of those processes was—cheaper. Besides, you should use a Lynite piston only in a ground cylinder Only 120 miles of the entire distance is over hard surface roads, while 427 miles is through bleak and arid desert country, much of it one way track, with sand stretches, chuck holes, rocks and steep grades. Throughout this grind the Nash gave a wonderful demonstration of its ability to stand up under severe punishment and of the abilities of modern automotive engineers who have guided the advancement of automobile transportation. The run was made without tire or mechanical trouble of any kind, and at the finish in front of the New-Louse Hotel in Salt Lake City, where the headquarters of the Utah State Automobile Association is located, the occupants of the car were given a great ovation by representative Salt Lake business and newspaper men. The time of 26 hours, 21 minutes, is elapsed time between Los Angeles, the checking station at Littlefields, and Salt Lake City, and is not actual running time, as it includes time for meals and cleaning in at the various telegraph offices along the way. The time mark set, in addition to locating the former record, is several hours under the record to San Francisco from Salt Lake City, yet several years ago by Ralph McFarland and marks the Los Angeles road as being the shortest distance in time between Salt Lake and the Pacific Ocean. While the performance of the car played a greater part in setting the record, a word of praise has been extended to the nervous drivers, Bigelow and Marshall, who drove the tire distance each taking tricks at the wheel of several hundred miles at a stretch. Members of the Troy Motor Sales Company organization were high in their praise of car and driver, and a telegram was sent immediately to President John J. Troy of the company and General Manager R. S. Breyer, who are now at the Nash factory, informing them of the wonderful performance of the car in its severe test. NEAR EAST RELIEF SPEAKER HERE SUN. E.
