Anaheim vs. Pomona in Elk League Opener Sun. Tomorrow afternoon the Cal. Elks Baseball league gets off to a flying start. Diamond athletes from one end of the state to the other will play the initial games in the great elimination contest to determine the Calif. champions. Last year the Anaheim Elks baseball team carried away the state honors, defeating San Francisco at the state convention. The year before, the first for the league, Anaheim won the So. Cal. title and was runnerup for the state title, losing in the finals to Sacramento. REAL BOXING SEEN HERE LAST EVENING Fight fans who attended the weekly doings of the Athletic club were treated to a bang-up boxing. Each of the six bouts was a feature and the big crowd went home tickled to death. There wasn't a substitute in any bout and as fast as one event was over, the next pair was in the ring. Everything went off with a bang, even to the starting of the show at 8:30. If the card last night is a forerunner of what the future shows are to be it is only a question of time before the old S. R. O. sign is hung out. Manager Billy Darnley is to be congratulated on the manner in which he came back last night in such strong shape. Next week's show should bring out a capacity crowd. As to the winners and losers, the biggest share of the credit belongs to them. They all fought hard and the losers were just as popular as the winners. In the main event Young Dudley of Anaheim, (the colored flash) and William Hunt from Fresno gave the crowd a real main event and what a battle it was—first it was Dudley and then it was Hunt. Dudley showed the hardest punch but Willie shook the colored lid up on more than one occasion with this year's Anaheim team is admittedly the strongest aggregation to represent the local "Bills." In addition to the old dependables in the box, Harry Hughes and Herb Salveson, the slab squad has Perry Callahan, who has loked good on two recent Sundays, and Ray Bush. The back stop position is held down by the veteran, Captain Buster Cullan, without a peer. Ramage will be at first for his third season. Bush plays his second year at second. Jack Pendleton is at short for the third league race. At third is Eddie Dunn. The outfield will contain such material as Ray Bush, Glen Callahan, Phil Schrott and plenty of other talent on the bench ready to set into their shoes. Anaheim opens the season on the local high school field with Pomona. The league is expected to be warm from the jump of as every other team in the state is laying to trina Anaheim by any possible hook or crook for the local Bills are, recognized as the one biggest handicap between the aspirations of any other aggregation and the state gonfalon. Joe Chaney came thrush with another win, out-boxing and outfighting tough Frankie Duffy in four rounds of torrid milling. Duffy tried hard but Chaney was too good for him. The Whittier lad is showing a warld of class in his recent bouts. Bobby Gray of La Habra gave Young Fisher, a colored youth with a wicked wallop, from the Angel City, a stiff argument for about three rounds, only to be fouled shortly before the end of the third by a left hand swing into the groin which no doubt was not intentional. The affair had been about even up to the unfortunate occurrence. Fisher asked for a return match which was granted by Gray. The curtain raiser was a real bunch of live fireworks and set the crowd wild with excitement. Young Montoyo and Mose Mootch battled ever inuch of the way to a draw. Only for a knock down that Mose scored on Montoyo in the third the Placeka youngster might have won his fight. It was a good draw. ELKS NO. Whys, Wherefores of Valve-in-Head Motor (Continued from Page I) are pure and the electric spark has the minimum distance to travel in doing its work in the Valve-in-Head motor. The net result of these characteristics of design is to give the Buick motor more perfect combustion, a quicker ignition of the charge and a smaller loss of heat through the water jackets. The sum of these advantages is more power and less gasoline consumption. And with the new automatic heat control, ideal vaporizing conditions are obtained, as all the heat required for the proper handling of the car is at low speed and at the various ranges of speed applied. ALL DODGE MODELS CHANGED IN BODY Behind the simple phraseology of an announcement which Dodge Bros. Detroit automobile manufacturers are publishing today in every important city and town in America, lies the story of a new achievement in automobile development. "Dodge Brothers announce a business coupe; conservative changes in the body design of all other types," he advertised reads. The business coupe is the first of all-st steel closed car ever marketed. In this respect it takes a new and distinct place in automotive history, for it involves an entirely unique principle of coupe body construction. The steel body not only practically eliminates the problem of limited production, due to the tedious and costly individual workmanship required on wood bodies, but also enables the manufacturers to give the coupe the same lustrous baked enamel finish which has already contributed so much to the reputation of Dodge Brothers open cars. This process in itself will also facilitate quantity production, as an enormous amount of time was consumed heretofore in applying the numerous coats of paint required on wood. Naturally, these are important factors in the determining of the selling price, resulting in economies which Dodge Brothers are passing directly to the purchaser. "Wood is practically eliminated from the construction of this car," said Chris H. Mann, the local dealer. "Ever the framework and panels are of steel, and the natural result is a lighter, quieter and more durable car. Steel prolongs life and reduces the possibility of squeaks and rattles." "The Business men of America have been expecting such a coupe and Dodge Brothers have given it to them." "It is in reality a coupe at a roadster price. It is particularly designed for the business man—who needs the comfort and protection of a closed car in his work, but who can easily get along without a few of the luxuries which, in the past, have made the closed car so expensive. The business coupe is built inside and out to withstand the wear and tear of every day use—and yet it retains the same lightness and beauty of line which everyone is accustomed to look for in Dodge Brothers closed cars. It lacks only what I might term the depreciation liabilities of the more expensive coupe. It is upholstered in genuine leather, has a wide, comfortable straight seat, is equipped with cord tire, heater, dome light, windshield cleaner and adjustments for raising and lowering windows. The doors are unusually wide and are fitted with new easy closing Yale locks. There is more than the usual amount of leg room and convenient and spacious luggage compartments are provided. Doctors, real estate men and salesmen of all kinds will find it just the car they need. We already have good indications of a tremendous demand. It is Dodge Brothers' policy to make improvements year after year and month after month and this is simply another step forward." SANTA ANA OBTAINS MUSIC CONVENTION Santa Ana has been chosen as the city for the 1922 annual convention of the Calif. Federation of Music Teachers, according to a telegram received today from Clarence A. Guastlin, Orange-co director of the Federation. The fedtreation board has been in conference at the northern metropolis. The dates will be announced later, but are expected to fall in May. The Chamber of Commerce invited the federation to come to Santa Ana. New Carburetor Will Double Ford's Mileage In last Saturday's auto section of this paper an announcement was made in regard to the wonderful performance of the new type Stromberg carburetor on a Ford car. In this announcement the story was told of a Ford car making 514-10 miles upon one single gallon of gasoline. To the average motorist this perhaps looks like a "fish story," but nevertheless is true." This test is verified by the Auto Club of Illinois and the Auto Association of America and was made through traffic in the city of Chicago, a couple of weeks ago. Such a record was thought impossible before this time. This new type Ford equipment inasmuch as it includes a special HOT SPOT Manifold which vaporizes the gasoline immediately, facilitating easy starting and quick get-a-way. This carburetor has been in the making for more than three years and all those that have witnessed its wonderful performance declare it marvelous. The factory is unable to supply the demand, so for this reason motorists are taken care of in turn as their names are received. West Bros. (The Auto Electric Maintenance Co.) Stromberg representatives for Northern Orange Co., have many names on their list and are installing this carburetor as fast as they receive them. Since the publicity in the Plain Dealer interested people from all of Orange county have visited them to find out more about this wonderful product. This Stromberg carburetor is installed on 10 drive trial. The motorist is the judge. In many cases the present miles per gallon has been doubled. If you own a Ford, put one on and watch the big results. West Brothers are located at Los Angeles and Chestnut streets, Anaheim. "Even in hard, overland transport, often operating huge pneumatic-tired trucks state that these freighters ride as gently as passenger cars."
