WINCHELL SMITH
ON HOW IT'S DONE
Winchell Smith, co-author with John E. Hazzard of "Turn to the Right," the Rex Ingram production for Metro now showing at the California theatre, gives the following views on the writing of plays:
"The modern type of comedy, which is the only thing I know anything about at all, should be written with a great many other things in mind besides the dialogue. The dialogue must be as carefully done as we can do it but just as important as that are the pantomine scenes, where there are pauses without anything being spoken. I believe that one of the most essential qualities for a playwright is the knowledge of stage direction. I am sure there isn't a man in the world who can produce a manuscript of mine as well as I can. I tried it with Belasco. He couldn't touch them—and he has forgotten more about stagecraft than I will ever know. It's the man who creates the story who knows—should know—what the lines really means."
"I see lots of plays that are failures because they begin with a lot of explanations about what the author wishes the audience to know about characters. Sometimes an author will have an actor talk about two or three other characters the audience hasn't seen. The first thing to find out is that we can depend on an audience's curiosity. Don's keep it inquisitive too long. Let it see what has been talked about."

CWPRESS NEWS
CYPRESS, June 16. (Spl.)—One of the most enjoyable social events of the year was the birthday surprise party given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. B. Miller, in honor of Mrs. W. C. Miller. The hostess prepared an elaborate birthday dinner just for the family circle. After dinner, Mrs. Geo. Miller suggested some music would be in order, so the lady folks retired to the parlor. The piano drowned the noise of the arriving party, and allowed the merrymakers to enter the house before Mrs. Miller was aware of their presence.
The surprise was a complete success. Games and music was enjoyed during the evening and at a late hour ice cream and cake were served. The honoree received many beautiful and unequal tokens of friendship. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hunt of La Habra, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Monroe, Mr. and Mrs. C.Dufrient, Mrs. Winnie Garret and Trumond Hudson of Hynes, Mrs. Dan Williams, Buena Park, Mr. and Mrs. Meade Shear of Centralia, Mr. Ben Bear of Los Angeles, Mr. and Mrs.H.A.Rue, Miss Larue Reeves, Mrs.M.B.Fagan, Miss Ruby Lucas, Mr. and Mrs.Don Grindley, Weslie Lucas, Mr. and Mrs.W.C.Miller, and the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs.Geo.B.Miller.
