CASABA TEAM NEXT SEASON According to Coach Youngman, Anaheim will have a fast team next year in basketball, a championship team if the boys will work for it. All the first year team boys but one will be leaving. The prospects for a baseball team are bright as there are only a few boys leaving the team Bushard, Cook, Clayes and Giese. With the departure of the seniors, Anaheim's football team for next season is badly crippled. Cook, the brilliant star, will say good-bye as also will Clayes, Fergus, Seims, N. Hile, Tuma and many of the others. Alfred Hile, Ingram, Gutosky and Mann are the only ones beside the lightweight team of this year who could be picked for a team next year. Mulvey is the only end who will be left. All the tackles are leaving. Newkirk will be left to support the backs. Schmidt will possibly be out of the team next year on account of injury last fall. Betzold will be one of the mainstays next season. The team next season will be lacking in weight as well as experience and much practice will be necessary to put out a team that will be a credit to the Blue and Gold. PAIGE 6-66 SCALES BIRCH HILL GRADE There’s a stubby, low hung little racer on the floor at the salesroom of Sam Hubbell, local Paige dealer, bearing a very conspicuous sign with the wording “If Did It.” This particular car is a Paige 6-66 special, equipped with a stock motor and the achievement to which the sign makes reference is the scaling in high gear the grades of Birch hill, the famous trysting place back of Brea, where local motorists are in the habit of meeting to test the hill climbing qualities of their cars. The Paige negotiated the hill with ease, roaring up the extremely rough, gravel strewn incline at 30 and 35 miles an hour. In fact the roadway was so broken with bumps and ruts that it was almost impossible for the observers who rode with the driver on the various trips to retain their seats. Owing to the many curves and bad road surface it was impossible to hold the car in the course under full power and even after going directly into a grade after slowing down to 15 miles an hour on a switch-back, the motor failed to display the least exertion. Sam Hubbell is much elated at the performance of the Paige as it is the first car to make the ascent in high gear and dealers conceded the grade to be impregnable under these conditions. Mr. Allen of the Southern California Auto club was the official observer. Others who made the trip were Mrs. Sam Hubbell, Miss Beulah Hubbell and Mrs. Carl Torres. “Knights of the Roaring Road” on this occasion were Lester Pulitz, Ralph Hubbell and Carl Torres. When it comes to directing our attention to the potential qualities of water Anaheim has a man by the name of D. W. Gregory who is devoting about as much of his time and energy in increasing the popularity of his beverage as Mr. Volstead. Gregory's specialized trade is the installation of pumping plants and his exhibit in this line at the Valencia Orange show proved a surprise to many who here-to-fore did not realize that such an extensive stock in this line was carried in Anaheim. This exhibit included everything needed for the domestic plant including the simple gas engine and pumpjack outfits to the more elaborate pressure systems. Gregory carries one of the most complete lines of this nature on the coast. CLUB GOES TO LONG BEACH Motorizing to Long Beach yesterday, the ladies of the A. F. L. card club met with Mrs. Eugene Mock at her pretty home in the beach city for an afternoon with five hundred. Mrs. Mock was a member of the club when she lived in Anaheim, and continues her membership since her removal. She had tastily used flowers for decorative effect, sweet peas on the table for a centerpiece, and yellow flowers about the rooms. Prizes were won by Mrs. Varcoe, first; Mrs. Hammon, second, and Mrs. McKeivy, consolation. Among were the Mesdames Trippett, Black, Varcoe, Reese, McKeivy, Benningsdorf, Dugas, and substituting were Mrs Denshay and Mrs Hannon, of Long Beach, and Mr. Mock, who was pressed into service when the twelfth lady failed to arrive. He later admitted he liked the substitute job just fine. Mrs. Mock served excellent lunch late in the afternoon.
