FIGHTING FOOD GRIPS GEORGIA SENATOR
Senator Ted Watson is read-headed and he is from Georgia. The combination of sunset-hued hair and Southern blond seems to have brewed a torrid temper in this case. Mr. Watson, who has created more than one scene since he went to the Senate, stirred in a big commotion by quarreling, a loud voice, in the Senate chamber with Senator Phipps of Colorado, our some Georgia post-office appointments. Adjourning to the hall outside the chamber, but still within hearing of the Senate, the fiery Georgian said to the Colorado Senator:

ALIENS SOON TURN INTO GOOD AMERICANS
The assimilable, susceptible European immigrant who comes to America with honest purpose to become a citizen of this country soon is Americanized. Some instances of this nature are truly phenomenal and inspiring. For example:
S. Dabinski, a Polish immigrant who knew no English when he arrived in New York one year ago, has been awarded the bronze medal offered annually by the National Society of Colonial Dames for the best patriotic essay. His subject was "George Washington."
Think of it! A foreigner, who could not speak a word of English, in one year transformed into an English speaking American, with enough knowledge of the language and of American history and enough patriotic fervor to take a prize for an essay in competition with others!
This illustrates the wonders achieved by the American melting pot.

THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA
New York Letter
by Lacey Jeannie Price
NEW YORK, May 27.—New York artists who particularly love Manhattan Island—the real New York—are moving over to Brooklyn, just because they do so love Manhattan. Led by Joseph Pennell, a group of the serious artists of the city are taking apartments high up from the street over in Brooklyn Heights, one of the closest points to this lively borough. For from their windows there, they can see our sky line and our buildings and even our streets as would be impossible from any other point. So windows in Brooklyn facing toward Manhattan have become the desired goal of our art colony.
New Yorkers are the greatest meat eaters in the world, according to John Doheny of the U.S. Bureau of Markets, who insists that we completely outdo the "Beef-eating British." "The per capita consumption of meat in Greater New York is estimated at three-fifths of a pound a day, or 215 pounds a year, as contrasted with one-half pound a day for the rest of the country," said Mr. Doheny. In one work, New Yorkers eat 20,000 cattle, 50,000 sheep and lambs, 22,000 calves, besides vast quantities of pork and pork products.
A Barnard College girl had her hair bobbed while her mother was in Europe. When mother and daughter met at the steamship pier, they gazed at each other for a full minute; then—"Your hair! Your beautiful hair!" screamed the mother. "What will your grandmother say when she sees you with bobbed hair?" The girl remained completely calm under the attack and retorted. "And what will she say when she sees your skirts?"

Comments on What Editors
NICK CARTER, THE UNIVERSITY
In its contributions to world literature the genius of the Anglo-Saxon during the last thirty years has most successfully expressed itself in the person of the detective. By far the best known character of British fiction the world over is Sherlock Holmes, and the best known character of American fiction is Nick Carter, whose author grew weary of his task yesterday after following his hero's career through more than thirty years and more than 30,000,000 words. Long before the war Nick Carter was simultaneously a delight and a problem in Germany, for example, where boys were stirred by the Cypress News
CYPRESS, May 27.(Spl.)—Work is progressing nicely on the foundation to the new school building. There is a car of sand on the tracks now and most of the forms are set, so the foundation will be complete in the next few days. The tile for the walls is on the ground. Cypress will soon be sporting a new school house.
Maxwell Cawthon from Coachella is visiting with his mother, Mrs. J. C. Cawthon for a few days. Max is a successful well man of the Coachella valley.
The Cypress boys have called off their baseball game scheduled with the married men for next Sunday. They will play Los Alamitos instead. They expect the practice will aid them in defeating the married men the Sunday following.

It’s said Will Hays works 20 hours a day. Maybe that’s just what Will tells his wife.
Some politicians throwing their hats into the ring don’t care what happens to their hats.
AS A MEANS OF ESCAPE
Betty—My papa is a mounted policeman.
Nellie—That’s no better than being a walking policeman.
Betty—Yes, it is. He can get away faster when there is trouble.
VERY CLOSE
“Did you say your husband is fond of those clinging gowns?”
“Yes, very. He likes one to cling to me for about five years.”

NO, NO, NANCY!
CHICAGO, May 27. Fawney this Lady Astor was telling how long creeps into one’s vocabulary and sticks there.
“I practically lived with the soldiers at our hospital at Cliveden for five years,” she said. “Naturally I picked up some of their expressions, and sometimes they show up in my conversation.
“I remember talking to Lord Balfour one time, and saying I did not like a certain person.
“Why not?” he asked.
“Because he has no guts,” I said.
“Naturally he looked at me in amazement.”
EXCEPT FROM AN AMATEUR’S SCENARIO SYNOPSIS
“If SUMMER COMES”—Maurice Sword falls in love with another woman, but not being a movie star he can’t marry her. However, like a movie star, he forgets all about his wife—
“There is no greater deceler in the world than liquor,” says Lady Astor, which shows she never drank any near-beer.
In Cincinnati, six robbers blew two safes and got $25,000. Police think robbery was the motive.
A six-toed cat has some seven-toed kittens. They won’t need more than four or five lives.
Was Kippling right about the female of the species? I was chatting with the woman detective in one of our large and gayer hotels the other day when she left me abruptly and disappeared into the crowd. “I saw two girls whom I thought were trying to speak to two men they didn’t know,” she explained upon her return. “And if you saw a man trying to speak to a girl in the same unintroduced way would you get equally martial about it?” I asked. “Oh, no,” she replied. “Of course we don’t approve of that either, but it isn’t so bad because the girls know enough to look out for themselves and the men don’t.”
Gloria Caruso, the two year old daughter of Enrico Caruso, has shown such marked appreciation and memory of music that her mother intends to begin her musical training as soon as she has reached the age of four. She has definite hopes that Gloria may become as great a singer as her father, the Incomparable.
COURAGE
Into a brown wood flew a brown bird.
In the winter time;
The sky was dark with snow unfallen.
The leaves were bent with rime.
Once north he flew, once south he flew.
He perched in a naked tree.
He took into the dreary dusk.
And whistled merrily.
William Alexander Percy.
WISE AND WITTY SAYINGS SAYINGS IN BRIEF
How to get a raise is the male problem; how to keep thin, the female.
In Boston, a neighbor’s rent was cut because a landlord’s baby cried at night. Atta baby!
A Chinaman named Chow can jump nearly 22 feet. Probably a result of the Japs keeping the Chinese on the jump.

MORNING FOLKS:
The June graduate is with us. New frocks, new shoes new suits, gee but Dad’s pocketbook is feeling the strain. If Dad’s paternal pride were not all puffed up he would make an awful fuss, but as it is he foots the bills and explains how John or Mary is sure to be a success.
Of all the graduates the college graduate is the most favored, for a goodly percent of them have fitted themselves for vocations suitable to their gifts. Yet we find many M.D.’s and surgeons that should have been mechanics and engineers that should have been D.D.s.
From the high schools come a great army of young people that have natural trends or gifts which they kill to enter the business world.
They feel that they have not the time or money to fit themselves for their natural walk of life, but they must make money and we see them enter into fields absolutely repulsive to them. They may make a parcial success, but how much more of a success would they have made if they would have followed and cultivated their natural abilities. Would Edison have made a success out of the grocery business, perhaps so, just the ordinary hand to mouth kind. All down through the ages the men of great success were those that loved their work or in other words followed their natural abilities.
With the present school facilities no young person can be cheated out of any goal they wish. If they would but forget the money craze and build for contentment, contentment in attaining an education for a vocation for which nature had fitted them, there would be far less failures and much more happiness as this old world of yours. You’re—SARGUM SPROUT.
ANAHEIM GIRL CLIMBS FAST

Miss Simpson, 22, is a graduate of Anaheim high school and of U.S.C. with a B.A. degree. Next month she will receive her master’s degree from U.S.C. While taking the heavy work leading up to this degree she has been principal of the Los Angeles juvenile home and of the Los Angeles city jail school. Next year she will also be principal of the Clara Barton Home with a large corps of teachers under her.
