FRANKLIN SEDANS POPULAR IN CITY
With sales of three Franklin sedans between May 5 and 20 and one touring car, the Bob White Co. is bettering the excellent record established before its removal from South Lemon-st. The purchasers of the sedans were Theodore Meyer of Santa Ana, and J. W. Walls and W. Lee Tully of Anheim. L. R. Cain of Balboa bought the touring car.
Closed cars are becoming more and more popular. During April shipments of this model from the Franklin factory at Syracuse, N. Y., composed 51 per cent of the total of all models, and the sedan led in favor by a wide margin. Broughams, coupes and touring-limousines, however, also were in vigorous demand. Counting the demi-sedan, a convertible type with many of the closed car's advantages, Franklin closed car shipments the past month amounted to 60 per cent of the total.
During the current calendar month Franklin dealers delivered into the hands of customers new Franklin cars have a retail value of $1,004,-515.
The new Nash cars also have taken the public's fancy as none of their predecessors has done. Some of the models are hardly obtainable, because of the demand, and the prospective buyers are advised to order early.
The first quarter of this year showed sales more than 51 per cent higher than in the first three months of 1921, while April was not only the biggest month in the company's history, but 18 per cent ahead of any previous April.
Hitherto August, 1920, has recorded the high water mark in Nash sales.

Sleeve-Valve Motor Willys-Knight Feature
The distinctive feature of the Willys-Knight is the sleeve-valve motor, and lately the story of how it came to be invented and adopted has been broadcasted in the company's publicity. Curtis Edwards, local distributor, points to the account as an interesting example of the triumph of inventive genius.
Charles Y. Knight, when he went to England and told Daimler, head of the famous works where English royalty had their cars made to order, that his motor improved with use was told he was crazy. "That's perpetual motion," said Daimler. Then Knight explained the difference between the poppet valve then in use and his motor. And Daimler was convinced and adopted the invention. Finally the King himself ordered a Daimler-Knight car.
Knight saw three different manufacturers on his return from England, and persuaded all of them to adopt his motor, but their production capacity was too small. Then he took ship back to England, met John N. Willys on the same boat, who was going to Egypt for a rest, and not much later Willies picked out the roughest roads he could find in England and drove a Daimler-Knight car over them as a test.
The motor stood the roughest use he could put it to and actually did improve with age.
Then Willies returned to America and ordered his engineers to perfect plans to build the motor in large numbers. They scouted the idea as too expensive. But they obeyed instructions, and finally turned out 12,000 in the first year of real quality output.
Then the war came and the Knight motor was installed in the terrible English tanks, then an innovation. History has written the rest at Cambria and elsewhere. Now the Knight has climbed the 29 gruelling miles from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek and never has balked.

GOODYEAR MAKES NEW, CHEAPER CORD
Addition of a complete new line of cord tires to sell at popular price has been announced by H. A. Price, manage roof the Los Angeles branch of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., of California. Nenno & Bock are local distributors.
The new line will be called the cross-rib cord, on account of the cross-rib tread design. It will not supplant the well known all-weather tread tire of the company, but will be a companion line to it.
The new tire will be marketed thru Goodyear service stations only and will sell at 20 to 25 per cent less than the All-Weather Tread tires.
It has been in course of development and testing for a number of months and will be ready for general distribution in June.
“There are two reasons for bringing out the new line;” says the Goodyear statement. “One is to give our dealers a tire to meet the needs of customers to whom firstf cost is an important factor. The other is to give the dealers a tire for so-called commercial accounts, meaning firms who have a number of trucks and buy in quantities.
“Two changes only in the construction of the tire as compared to the all-weather tread tire have been made in order to effect the lower prices. The tire, however, should give as high a mileage per dollar as the all-weather tread.
“Second, the design used on the tread permits an economy in the volume of rubber used. The all-weather tread tire, being designed to get the maximum of traction and non-skid properties, uses more actual rubber in the tread than perhaps any tire on the market. The tread rubber in the cross-rib cord, however is a tough, slow wearing stock that should give excellent mileage to users.
The cord fabric used in the new tire will be made of the same quality of long staple Arizona Pima cotton as all-weather tread and the rubber will be of the same grade exactly, except in the tread. The tire will be the same full oversize as the all-weather tread except In the 30x3½ size.”
ALTNOW TAKES OVER COLUMBIA BATTERY
Get a battery man who knows Walter E. Altnow knows batteries because he has manufactured them and is still doing so. As a maker of the I. B. S. battery he has become well-known here and elsewhere in the south. Now he has taken over the Columbia Storage battery. “The Columbia Battery,” said Altnow, “is manufactured by the National Carbon Company, the fourth largest corporation in the United States. It is not a battery built to sell on certain features. It is a simple and reliable battery throughout, every unit of which is the best that its manufacturer can make. It differs from the average battery, however, in that the plates are 10 per cent over-size, giving 10 per cent greater power. The Columbia Storage Battery is built to deliver its normal current for the size car in which it is used plus reserve power for extra frequent starting without suspending its ignition and lighting functions. This reserve power is what often carries motorists through situations such as run down an ordinary battery.
Many people are surprised to learn that no Columbia representative will sell a Columbia battery un-
