"JAY WALKER" BANE OF MOTORIST'S LIFE
"Safety Week would be a good time to begin a war on the 'jay-walker,' said a distributor here.
*As everyone knows, the jay-walker is the gentleman, or perhaps the lady, who cuts corners or darts out from behind cars parked at the curb or from behind street cars and never looks either way when crossing the street in the middle of the block.
“This gentleman is the bane of the motorist's existence and I really believe the time will come when law will prescribe for him just the same as it prescribes for the motorist who drives past the 'stop' signal or passes a street car that is loading or unloading passengers.
"The jay-walker is responsible for many accidents and, as it often happens, he is not the one who suffers for his carelessness and negligence.
"It should be a violation of traffic for any person to cross the street in the middle of the block in the downtown section during the rush hours of the day.
"Lots of these jay-walkers drive automobiles and their traits are here displayed by cutting in front of other cars and 'hogging' street; by turning sharply one way or the other without giving any warning whatever and by running down the people who are trying to get across the street at the intersections.
"All of which brings us back to the human element in walking and driving. If, when we are walking, we would cross at the corner and go with the trffic; if we would let the approaching car know that we see..."

The most competitive, the most discriminative and most desirable market in the United States has been won by Studebaker cars because of their quality and service records in the hands of owners.

If, when we are walking, we would cross at the corner and go with the trifffic; if we would let the approaching car know that we see him coming and wait for him to pass and not dart in front of his car—just to see if we can make it—we would help matters a lot.
"When we change over from the pedestrian, and drive car, if we would always give hand signals; slow down at the crossings and give the pedestrians a chance; if we would remember that courtesy on the road is just as desirable as in your home, then the number of wrecks and accidents would decrease appreciably.
Our criticism of the street car service is that the cars usually are going the wrong way.

April was the biggest month in the history of Studebaker!
Each month this year has seen our former high marks broken under the ever increasing leadership of Studebaker cars. January was our biggest January. February not only eclipsed any previous February, but, up to March 1st, was the largest retail month we ever had. March shattered ALL previous records.
And here we are with April TOPPING ALL.
Our retail sales for April, 1922, were practically double our combined sales for January, February and March, 1921! That represents an achievement without parallel in the history of the automobile industry.
Every Studebaker sells another!!!
Standing upon the principle inaugurated by the founders of this business 70 years ago—the principle of complete satisfaction to everyone who deal with the House of Studebaker—WE SOLICIT YOUR VALUED PATRONAGE.

SURF FISHING LURES MANY
TO BEACHES OF SOUTHLAND
This Is Safety Week; More Than 1,500,000
One of the "keenest" of sports open to the lover of rod and reel in Southern California is the surf fishing that may be enjoyed almost the entire year around at any point along the coast line where kelp or rocks do not promise danger to tackles and difficulties in playing and landing the fish, once hooked.
Probably the old veterans—and the younger ones, too—who belong to the Southern California Rod and Reel club are the most consistent followers of surf fishing. Hardly a Saturday night gets by from April 1 November that these tanned experts at long distance casting are not to be found on their way to near the mouth of opango canyon, to Alamitos Bay, Anaheim Landing, Huntington Beach, Laguna or San Onofre. Clad in typical outing costume, laden with pack bag full of tackles, bait and food; smoking a much abused pipe of old vintage, and wearing a look of faith such as the confirmed fisherman never loses, however infrequent the "bites."
While enjoying a spin along the beaches recently, George Dunton, Anaheim dealer for the Lincoln, discovered a party on one of these surf fishing excursions, and he learned that the angler's trip to the seashore had been made in a Lincoln de Luxe Phaeton.
When the surf fish are biting at all well the fisherman is happy. The labor of continually casting far out beyond the breakers and then slowly reeling in, is a labor of real love. If there be a noble, a jerk, and a wild run of the line—he is doubly happy, and with good luck and considerable skill, may expect to bring in a good-sized beauty of several pounds weight on the end of his line.
The sport is far more interesting than that of sitting on the railing of one of the beach pliers, waiting patiently for a bite—sometimes unwillingly for an hour at a time—for there is action all the time. Bites are far between there is plenty to keep the fisherman busy—keep breakers and small sharks—and it is a real sport.

This Is Safety Week; More Than 1,500,000 Persons Killed, Hurt by Autos Last Year
This is to be Safety Week. In 1921 there were more than 1,500,000 of our people killed and injured in automobile accidents—more than six times the number of Americans that were killed and injured in the World War. Those accidents caused disabilities and propriety damage amounting to over one billion dollars, says a well-known auto manufacturer.
With 10,000,000 automobiles in every imaginable state of mechanical fitness on the streets and roads of America today, directed by 10,000,000 drivers of every conceivable shade ofexperience and carefulness, the question of safety in motoring has developed into a problem which is the subject of much study and discussion all over the United States.
The Safety Week cards which are displayed in the downtown stores give some good advice to both the pedestrian and the motorist.
The first one is to "Cross the Street at the Corner."
The people who cross the street in the middle of the block are known as "jay-walkers" and are the causes of many avoidable accidents. The place to cross the street in the downtown districts is at the corner and the time will undoubtedly come when "jay-walking" will be a violation of the law, just the same as passing a street car that is taking on passengers.
Don't be a Jay-walker.
The next suggestion is also directed at the pedestrian — "Look Before You Cross."
It seems absurd to have to tell a sound minded man to look before he ventures out into the street, but if you will stand on any street corner for five minutes you will see person after person start across the street, their heads down, walking with as much nonchalance as a debutante strolling across a ballroom.
In capital letters, the words—"DRIVE CAREFULLY"—hit you right between the eyes. Every person who has ever driven knows what this means and we assume that it needs no further explanation.
Next comes the most important, or possibly the next most important piece of advice on the whole card—"Always Give the Hand Signals."
Upon investigation it was found that a majority of accidents are caused by the failure of the driver to give the hand signal. For your information, the adapted hand signals are: To stop, put hand straight out horizontally from the body; for right turn, hand is held above the horizontal position; for left turn, is placed below the horizontal position. It is such an easy matter and requires but an instant to give these signals, which tell the car behind exactly what you intend doing and the pedestrian on the corner which way you are going to turn, failure to give them is inexcusable.
"Test Your Brakes" is the next good suggestion.
Motorists in general do not attach sufficient importance to the brakes on their cars. Safety will drive and drive, knowing all the time that their brakes are not 100 per cent without once considering the responsibility which would be theirs in case of an emergency. A well known brake lining company has compiled a chart which shows the distance in which your car should the crossing at a sensible speed Unless your car come within this standard it is dangerous to both yourself and the public. When the brakes are not as they should be the time to get them fixed is right now—tomorrow may be too late.
In the interests of the pedestrian the card asks that you "Give the Pedestrian a Chance." At the intersection the pedestrian has a right to cross. If, by slowing down for the smallest fraction of a second, you can allow someone to pass without causing him to jump for his life, so—it is merely being courteous. Another way in which the driver can cooperate to make walking more enjoyable and safer is to stop behind the white line and by approaching the crossing at a sensible speed when it is apparent that the "Go" signal will not turn for him for a minute cause.
"Watch the Car Ahead"—this is evidently intended for the youth—and some of the older men—who watch the side walk when driving downtown rather than the car in front of him.
"Slow Down at Crossings"—either comply with this or someday you are (Continued on Page 2)

Duty of Distributor
Transportation by automobile and truck has grown so rapidly—traffic is such a different problem from the days of horse drawn vehicles and bicycles—that it is both fitting and proper that something should be done to call the public's attention to the present day traffic problem in a forceful manner.
"The time has come," says a leading manufacturer, "when the automobile distributors must all realize that their business is not only to sell transportation, but to include in their sales and advertising work an educational feature that will assist the ultimate buyer to a better understanding of transportation and traffic problems.
"We can't just heedlessly sell cars and trucks. We must show the people how to use them properly. First, the thing that will make driving and vehicle operation safe is to build safety into the car. This is the manufacturer's first big job."
"Cars must be easy to handle, they must have good brakes, they must be able to jump out of the way of danger by fast acceleration and they must be made of such dependable material that they will not crumble up in a crash."
*First of all we built good brake. Official and unofficial tests have proved how far we have gone mechanically to make a car as safe as possible from a braking standpoint.
"But we have not stopped here. Our sales department is continually preaching the gospel of how to handle CAR THIEVES BALKED BY CLUB
With still another week of successful work on the part of the Auto Club of So. Cal. in recovering stolen cars, and in some cases the thieves themselves, the club's list of cars missing continues to dwindle. In four days this week the club recovered 33 cars. This phase of the club's work never has been more fruitful of results.
The new system whereby the club keeps a careful check on cars entering and leaving the state, in co-operation with the motor vehicle department is believed to be responsible.
The recent breaking up by the authorities of organized gangs of thieves in So. Cal., whose loot amounted to millions, also has had a large part in cutting down the ratio of thefts to recoveries.
Means of Maintenance Is Important Factor
"To realize the importance of maintenance to the automobile owner, one has only to think of what..."
Cars must be easy to handle, they must have good brakes, they must be able to jump out of the way of danger by fast acceleration and they must be made of such dependable material that they will not crumble up in a crash.
First of all we built good brake. Official and unofficial tests have proved how far we have gone mechanically to make a car as safe as possible from a braking standpoint.
But we have not stopped here. Our sales department is continually preaching the gospel of how to handle a car in traffic—how to accelerate—how to turn corners and how to brake a car.
We try to teach every person these things for his own good and for the good of everyone else who drives a car or walks.
Safety Week will undoubtedly do lots of good if the people will only co-operate with the traffic police and realize that everyone who drives a car should play the game—and play it on the square."
FAGEOL BUSSES FOR CROWN STAGE, ORDER
No more Fageol tractors to be delivered before August is the word which Fageol distributors are issuing. The reason is the factory at Kansas City is busy manufacturing a new passenger bus, of which the Crown Stage has ordered three, says H. S. Gelnette, of A. A. DeVaux.
Features include a body hung low with a running board only 13 inches from the ground; drop windows, doors extending to the running board, over-all height of six feet, three and five-sixteenths inches, increased ventilation, ample dome lights, upholstery of the finest No. 1 leather, etc. Ease of entrance and exit are among the marked improvements.
