NEW PACKARD IS WONDERFUL CAR To describe the new Packard 126 and 133 cars from either a mechanical or design standpoint, would be to overlook a large number of individually small, and yet important details that are attractive, and which, in the aggregate, greatly increases the value of the new line. The following are a group of miscellaneous points, according to Dale & Co., distributors. RADIATOR: The new type radiator has a nickel plated shell, with a convex front surface, which relieves the severity of the old sharp corners and, particularly in the nickel equipment, is exceedingly attractive. The radiator is mounted differently than in the past. Herefore, it has been set on built-up pedestals, which are now done away with and the front end frame cross member is so shaped that the radiator rests directly on it. This adds to the stiffness of the front end of the frame, at the same time providing a more rugged mounting for the radiator. This will eliminate a good deal of vibration that was found in some of the 116 radiators. The same front cross member is so shaped that it automatically takes the place of the little pan that was necessary between the radiator and the front end of the motor. The stiffening effect, before mentioned, is exceedingly desirable, with a three-point motor suspension. PUMP PLACING: The arrangement of the pump is one of the most apparent changes in the new motor. It accomplishes several things. First, it makes it easy to take off the cylinder head without loosening radiator, fan, and so on, but also, it shortens the fan belt. The car is equipped with a new type fan, which will give a lot better efficiency. Please note the elimination of outside water pipes and the fact that on this car these are only two water hose connections. All of the piping for the deflection of the water when the thermostat is closed, is cast into the cylinder head, and the water intake manifold is provided for in the bolted-on cover plate. HOOD RESTS: A new feature has been added in the bood rests, both on the radiator and at the cowl. The fabric is placed some distance under strong, serviceable and at the same time, very handsome. COWL VENTILATOR: No water leakage can occur through this ventilator when closed. Notice how the edge is crimped up so that water, when blown up on the cowl, will not enter, but be carried to the back and run off. The ventilator is also provided with a lever adjustment on a tight spring, with three different locations, so that it is quickly and easily adjusted and rattle-proof. SIDE HOOD PANEL: Notice particularly, the hood panels, that the louvers are cut in. This adds very much to the handsomeness of the car. FENDERS: The fenders are of the same type as is now used on the Twin-Six, exceedingly presentable and strong and serviceable. INSTRUMENT BOARD: A completely new design of instrument board has been provided, with two oval glasses, under one of which is a combination speedometer and clock, both of Waltham make, and under the other, is the oil pressure gauge and ammeter. The switch is just to the left of these two ovals and the dash light is operated with a separate button on the top of the switch. The whole thing is simplified and beautified as well. WINDSHIELD MOUNTING: While rubber pads have been provided in previous models to prevent leakage around the wind shield base, these new cars are greatly improved by use of a rubber pad that runs completely under the lower half of the windshield and is entirely made in one piece. The lower portion of the windshield does not move and is also equipped with rubber filters. The upper windshield moves forward and on the inside is equipped with finger hooks to use in closing. EMERGENCY TOOL POCKET: Under the cowl, on the right hand side just in front of the right hand door is a nice little emergency tool pocket, provided for gloves, tools, rags, etc. FLOOR BOARDS: The floor boards have been redesigned to eliminate rattle and cold air in coming through. The front toe board is one piece aluminum. ACCELERATOR FOOT REST: A nice little feature is the three separate steps in this foot rest, making for less tension on the foot. BODY MOULDINGS: The mouldings on the outside of the car... HOOD RESTS: A new feature has been added in the hood rests, both on the radiator and at the cowl. The fabric is placed some distance in under the hood so that a little space is provided both at the radiator strelt and the cowl. This eliminates the possibility of the hood coming in contact with metal, either edgewise or flatly, and consequently eliminates the possibility of hood noises and adds greatly to its appearance. Very substantial fabric is provided and will only need to be replaced at very great intervals, and then is exceedingly easy to do. MOTOR ACCESSIBILITY: Motor accessibility is very apparent on this motor. See how easy it is to get in around it; the distributor mounted directly on top, cylinder head comes off with only a few nuts and studs, fan and front end chain are easily adjusted from the exterior, generator is very accessible, and so on. DASH: The dash is a steel stamping, but it is fitted with a backing of wood, to completely deaden any resounding noise of vibration. FRONT HEADLIGHTS: New design nickel plated headlights are provided, which are water-proof, handsome in appearance and provided with outside focus adjustment. Note particularly, the brackets on which these headlights are mounted. By means of cross tube fender brackets and lamp brackets the whole front end system is tied together so that it is extremely rigid and shortens the fan belt. The car is equipped with a new type fan, which will give a lot better efficiency. Please note the elimination of outside water pipes and the fact that on this car there are only two water hose connections. All of the piping for the deflection of the water when the thermostat is closed, is cast into the cylinder head, and the water intake manifold is provided for in the bolted-on cover plate. Emergency Tool Pocket: Under the cowl, on the right hand side just in front of the right hand door is a nice little emergency tool pocket, provided for gloves, toots, rags, etc. FLOOR BOARDS: The floor boards have been redesigned to eliminate rattle and cold air in coming through. The front toe board is one piece aluminum. Accelerator Foot Rest: A nice little feature is the three separate steps in this foot rest, making for less tension on the foot. Body Mountings: The mouldings on the outside of the car, wherever possible, are integral with the body panels, being stamped in. In one or two places only, is this impossible and there they are put on so that there is no chance of their coming loose. The metal trim rails which run along the cowl and over the tops of the doors are made or are metal instead of wood, beautifully finished, and of course, permanent. All of the doors of the enclosed cars and the rear doors of the open models are now equipped with footman straps, which lay back flat when the doors are closed. Doors: The doors on all models are now made flush so that there will be no overlapping mouldings to break up the body lines. The inside door handles on the new cars are so designed as to unlock the door by either an up or down motion and so shaped that they will not catch the clothing. Muffler Pipe: The rear end of the muffler pipe is equipped with a nozzle which is flattened out in such a way that the exhaust will not strike the ground, sidewalk, nor the spary tire. This is connected by a rod to the spare tire rack and so made very solid. Top Support: The irons for supporting the top when down are not visible when the top is up. They fit into sockets in the body which are hidden by the top in use panel has no NOTES ON the inside of the cloth loop door and is used inside. On the front door on the Coupe, that they will cumstances between dan models, tubular braid which of course cept the right ped with insult only necessary front door from 133 Sedan Lift are provided doors. This is simply a little pushed down, cannot be opened ing the inside will not be dailed the catch has is ajar. All clips with visors may covered and reat at the front very substantially vertical on it the water will through the wable pillars at eliminated. Los Angeles St. ANAHEIM Phone 32J THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA ADJUSTMENTS MADE HERE ON BELL TIRES The Reliable Tire Co., Orange-co. distributors of the Bell tires, wish to emphasize the fact that any adjustment that might come up on Bell tires and tubes, will be handled directly at their store at 147 So. Los Angeles street, Anaheim. To date there have been close to 10,000 Bell tires sold in Southern California, and not one tire has come back for adjustment—something indeed remarkable. However, it can be expected that an adjustment, even in the most perfected piece of merchandise, will come up, sooner or later, and the distributors are glad to assure that in case of trouble, the matter can be taken up with someone on the ground. The boys also want it emphasized that Bell tires are not cheap tires, the list price on same in the East being about on a par with such tires as Goodyear, United States, Firestone, etc., but the price at which they are being offered on the coast is a special introductory price. WORE ONLY EARRINGS BERLIN, May 5.—The local purity campaign has begun, and Lola Bach will wear clothes for the next month at least. Fraulein Bach and her troupe of dancers, who have aroused all sorts of sensations in a cabaret, were in the police court. Fraulein Bach was given a month's imprisonment and her assistants were fined after a purity worker had testified they wore only earrings in addition to the charms Nature gave them. VISORS FOR HELMETS PARIS, May 5.—French army experts are experimenting with a new form of helmet with movable visor. The visor is to be set over the face when the soldier is in action. Other times it is pushed up out of the way. AIR REQUIREMENTS Switzerland requires aviators doing stunt flying to have special licenses and life insurance policies and their planes must undergo official inspection. hidden by the gypsy curtains when the top is up, thus the rear body panel is visible. "Fine and Cheap," Is Feature of Oakland "A fine car at a reasonable price." This is the characteristic, in a word, of the new series Overland touring car that strikes everybody who sees it on display at the Mission Garage, 243 West Center street; Cortis V. Edwards, the proprietor; will be glad to show the car in detail to any one interested. Think of a price of $595 (f. o. b. Totedo) for a fine car completely equipped in all details that make for comfort or convenience! If you want a roadster, that car will cost you the same amount. The latter is ideal for the farmer's quick trips to town and the salesman who must cover a wide territory. It is easily parked in the city, it is agile and powerful on the road, and it is economical in gas, oil and tires. "In the new series touring Overland, that ideal combination of rugged reliability, continuous economy and buoyant riding comfort the public has long sought in truly low-cost motor transportation has been fully achieved. Built of light, alloy steels, with an all-st steel body, mounted on Triplex springs, this Overland stands unequalled among low-priced cars in saving tires, saving gas, saving time. And it looks good in any company. To its economy, Overland adds a restful ease of riding comfort that opens to the nation's business, the back trails and the rough roads that motorists usually avoid. School Demands Skirts Over Breeches RENO, May 5.—Reno schoolgirls have been advised by their teachers that skirts must be worn with riding breeches in the schoolrooms. Several girls appeared with breeches and were told such costumes were not appropriate for classes without the more feminine skirt. The girls explained that they were forced to walk through deep snow on their way to school from their homes. PROFITEERING IN WIVES LONDON, May 5.—Profiteering has spread not only all over the world, but has spread to the wife-market. PORTS are experimenting with a new form of helmet with movable visor. The visor is to be set over the face when the soldier is in action. Other times it is pushed up out of the way. AIR REQUIREMENTS Switzerland requires aviators doing stunt flying to have special licenses and life insurance policies and their planes must undergo official inspection. hidden by the gypsy curtains when the top is up, thus the rear body panel has no such interruption. NOTES ON CLOSED BODIES: On the inside of all doors is a nice little cloth loop which is set into the door and is used for closing it from the inside. The window regulators on the front doors of the Sedans and on the Coupes are moved forward so that they will not under any circumstances be in the way. In all Sedan models, the robe rail is made of tubular braided rope of fine material which of course is seamless. All except the right front doors are equipped with inside locks so that it is only necessary to lock the right front door from the outside. In the 133 Sedan Limousine, outside locks are provided on both right hand doors. This inside locking device is simply a little button, which, when pushed down, locks the doors which cannot be opened except by unlocking the right front door and releasing the inside latches. These locks will not be damaged by slamming if the catch has been set when the door is ajar. All closed cars are equipped with visors made of metal, nicely covered and rolled around a stiff rod at the front edge, so that they are very substantial. The windshields are vertical on the closed jobs so that the water will not blow up and through the windshield and the double pillars at the front corners are eliminated. RENO, May 5.—Reno schoolgirls have been advised by their teachers that skirts must be worn with riding breeches in the schoolrooms. Lord Dewar said in a speech here, "Before the war," he said, "a wife could be bought for four spearheads in Sudan. Now she costs eight. In the cattle country a wife used to cost four cows; now she costs seven." A circular slide rule that can be carried in a coat pocket is the invention of a San Francisco man, a magnifying glass aiding in reading it.
