ECONOMY RUN TO HAVE 5 CLASSES
LOS ANGELES: April 29. — The complete entry blank, including the rules for the Seventh Annual Camp Curry, Yosemite, Economy Run, to be held May 12-13, was mailed during the week to the American Automobile Ass'n. Contest Board in New York with the request that they wire the sanction for the event in order that blanks may be printed and issued to dealers desiring to enter, at the earliest possible moment.
George F. Stephensson, technical representative of the A. A. A., who has drawn up the rules for the run ever since it was started, drew up the rules in which a number of important changes have been made for the event this year.
Instead of the four classes into which the cars have been divided in past years, there will be five divisions. There have been many complaints that six cylinder cars were expected to compete against 'fours', and while on several occasions the 'sixes' have won in their class against 'fours' it was thought best to make a change. The classes therefore have been arranged as follows:
1-E—Four cylinder cars, 1922 model; $800 and under, factory.
2-E—Four cylinder cars, 1922 model; $801 to $1200, factory.
3-E—Four cylinders cars, 1922 model; $1201 to $3000, factory.
4-E—Six or eight cylinder cars, 1922 model; $1001 to $3000, factory.
5-E—Four, six, eight or twelve cylinder cars, 1922 model; $3001 and over, factory.
In addition to these five classes, of Southern California, with its plethora of wonderful scenic places, was never more beautiful than it is at this time, for the abundance of moisture that was precipitated last winter has clothed mountain, valley and plain in a dress of most attractive green. Springtime is blossom time and the varied hues of the poppy and other flowers that bloom in riotous profusion on mountain and in gale, lure the motorist over highway and byway to happy retreats.
Springtime sounds "The Call of The Open Road," and invites the toller and his brood to the open in search of healthy recreation that stimulates both body and mind. So Calif. is justly called "The Motorists' Paradise," and the key to it is the motor car. Without a motor car, one misses the real pleasures of the southland's great outdoors.
Where else in our land can one find such a wonderful combination of scenery, resorts, climate, highways and conveniences, as are to be found in So Calif.? From mountain to sea, the panorama is spread in wonderful and almost kaledioscopic color, and all may be enjoyed in a day's easy drive over perfect highways. Nature and man have effected a combina-

In addition to these five classes of course, there will be the usual sweepstakes for the car, regardless of class, making the best showing on ton-miles per gallon of gasoline. The ton-mileage is determined as follows: Total weight of car (and load) in tons, times the number of miles driven (approximately 364 miles), divided by the number of gallons of gasoline consumed, which equals 'ton-miles' per gallon of gasoline.
No entry fee is charged in this event, which, however, is limited in its eligibility to cars which are at the time of entry, the property of established automobile dealers of Los Angeles.
The first day's run will be to Fresno, with cars leaving starting point in Los Angeles at one minute intervals after 7 a.m., and with a time limit of ten hours in which to make the control at Fresno. The run in to Camp Curry will be made so that contestants will arrive sometime Saturday afternoon, May 13. The limit on arrival at the Camp Curry control has been set at 6 p.m.
All entries must be in the hands of J. A. C. Waters, 732 South Springstreet, not later than 6 p.m., Saturday, May 6th. The Run this year will again be in charge of H. F. Weller, as manager.
The Spanish government has ordered that all articles of food and drink be subjected to sanitary inspection before they are admitted to Spain.

Returning from an exhausting plunge into the wilds of Death Valley in search of the old Mormon trail and the famous lost wagons of the early pioneers, a crew of the Automobile Club of Southern California reports that preparations have been completed to make the desert safe for motorists.

Returning from an exhausting plunge into the wilds of Death Valley in search of the old Mormon trail and the famous lost wagons of the early pioneers, a crew of the Automobile Club of Southern California reports that preparations have been completed to make the desert safe for motorists.
Difficulties almost beyond belief were overcome by the club representatives in their endeavor to penetrate the desert to the north of the fateful valley. At one point it was necessary to hire horses to drag the car through a body of water known as Maynard Lake.
Emigrant Gap, that famous passage-way through which some of the early wagon trains found their way to California from Utah was negotiated without difficulty, as was Red Rock canyon. In this vicinity, charting notes of all water holes were taken.
The Auto Club is now preparing metal signs which will be used to mark the roads and water holes of the desert, so that motorists can tour the "lost" regions without danger.
Good news for those who wish to visit the ghost cities of the west, those abandoned towns of the gold rush in Nevada is contained in the club's announcement just made that a comprehensive map of that territory is being drafted. Some of these ghostly ruins included Bullfrog, Ballarat and Rhyolite.
The streets of these towns were once trod by thousands of gold-mad folk, and now they are deserted, the fine buildings falling to ruins and the pavement crumbling under foot. Occasionally a lone and decadent prospector is encountered, hoping against hope that he may be the one to find the lost lodes and to wallow in wealth during his declining years.
HUDSON BUYS ESSEX STOCK
DETROIT, Mich., April 29—Stock of the Essex Motors Corp. will be purchased by the Hudson Motor Co., which manufactures the Essex cars, R. D. Chapin, president of the Hudson company announced. The latter has increased its capital from 200,000 shares to 1,200,000 shares, no par stock.

AIDS SPEED DEMON
Three California built motors will
be contestants in the biggest automobile race of the year, when the starter
gives the "go" signal for the Indianapolis 500 mile grind on Memorial Day. And these motors will be driven by three of the most noted speed demons on the American speedways.
Last year there was but one California built motor in the Indianapolis race, Ira Vall's. This year, however, Frank Elliott, Jimmie Murphy, Grand Prix winner, and Champion Tommy Milton are expected to have California motors.
Both Elliott and Milton have had phenomenal success, Milton winning the first two races of the year, as well as having clinched the 1921 speed title. Elliott was a consistent price winner last season and has started the 1922 season with a good record. Murphy will appear in all of the big races with his new speed wagon.

"Probation Is Poor Penalty," Auto Club
An example should be made to warn some of the younger boys of the county who have lately taken to borrowing(?) automobiles and going for joy rides. During the past few months, police in different portions of the county have arrested several different pairs of these youngsters, says the Auto Club of Orange county.
But in most cases when brought before the judge, they were placed upon probation and allowed to depart. Naturally enough this does not discourage other youngsters from trying the same stunt.
A week ago two Santa Ana youths stole an automobile and drove to Balboa, where they were caught and brought back. One of them told the policeman that arrested him that he wasn't worried, for he knew all he would get would be probation.
While probation is a good thing, and we naturally enough dislike to see lads of more or less tender years go to jail or homes, something should be done, something sufficiently severe to discourage other lads from attempting the same trick in the future, secure in the knowledge that all they would receive would be probation.
