SPORT ATHLETIC CARNIVAL AT ELK CLUBHOUSE All arrangements have been completed by the various committees in charge of the athletic carnival at the Elks' club Thursday evening. The show will be open to Elks and their friends and arrangements have been made to take care of 1200 persons. It is expected the ladies will turn out in masse as there have been quite a few surprises and novelties arranged for their benefit. All the boxers who are to take part are reported in the plink of condition and ready for the gong. The novelty bout between Dad Rice, the steward of the club, and Chas. Goff, secretary, is creating a lot of excitement around the club and should be a seream from start to finish. The mixed wrestling and boxing bout between Al Sparks and Guess Stoval is also creating a lot of guessing as to who is the better athlete, the wrestler or the boxer. The program as a whole is one of the best ever put on by any club in this part of the state and those attending should witness a high class entertainment. Secretary Chas. Goff is figuring on starting a handball tournament in the new handball courts just installed the first of next month. The club is also arranging to organize a volley ball team for the summer months. The boxing and wrestling classes are increasing daily and the new gymnasium is full form morning to night, keeping the clubs new physical trainers busy caring for the members taking exercises. All proceeds from the athletic show will go to buy new equipment for the local Elks ball team, winner of last year's Elks state championship. Billy Darnley, popular athletic manager of the Anaheim Athletic club, has been engaged to act as referee which means that nothing but fair and impartial decisions will be rendered, something that always meets with approval of all fairminded fans. High School Athletics Anaheim tennis players defeated Tustin in a league tournament here last evening. The local players won all the matches with the exception of the girls' second singles, girls' doubles and mixed doubles. The point winners were Bob Gibbs and Ray Cailor in the boys' first and second singles, Lorena Poirier in the girls' first singles, and Stewart Gates and Clayton Cook in the boys' doubles. Huntington Beach diamond men defeated the local athletes in a game on the local diamond last evening. The beach boys proved too fast. The score was 7 to 12. The lineup for last night's game was as follows: Janss, c; Cook and Carroll, p; Mann, 1b; Giese, 2b; Newkirk, ss; Bushard, 3b; Clayes, lf; Carroll, cf; Crist, rf. He made such a request last Sunday of Manager Billy Knott, but the local mentor couldn't see it. Today, Corpe telephoned to Knott with such a request again. Again Knott told him nothing doing. So the next game will be played here as per schedule. Knott assumes the attitude that the Anaheim Elks are the champions of the state; if they want to play the champs they will have to come to Anaheim—until the league season opens when the locals, of course, will be without a foul ball. Plain Dealer for Good Job Printing, Anahaim Elks last Sunday, like to stage the deciding contest of the series on his own sandlot. He made such a request last Sunday of Manager Billy Knott, but the local mentor couldn't see it. Today, Corpe telephoned to Knott with such a request again. Again Knott told him nothing doing. So the next game will be played here as per schedule. Knott assumes the attitude that the Anahaim Elks are the champions of the state; if they want to play the champs will have to come to Anahaim—until the league season opens when the locals, of course, will play half the games away from home. Youngman and Lewis will probably be in uniform next Sunday. Daley, a Los Angeles umpire, will be seen behind the bat. Manager Knott has received a request for another three-game series from the Alexander Colored Giants of Los Angeles. It is probable they will be accommodated when Arcadia is disposed of. ILLINOIS WOMEN RUN FOR CONGRESS CHICAGO, April 19—"Hall the woman!" Tradition was completely disrupted in the history of Illinois politics with the filing of petitions of candidacy for congressman-at-large by two women, both of whom are mothers. One of the new candidates is Mrs. Winifred Mason Huck. She seeks the office formerly held by her father, the late Congressman William E. Mason. The other is Mrs. Mary Belle Spencer, public guardian of Cook county. PREPARE FOR CALIF. JAIL SENTENCE WAS SOCIAL SUCCESS SAN JUAN, Porto Rico, April 19. George R. Shanton, for many years chief of police of Porto Rico, has just served a sentence of 48 hours in jail for contempt of court. He refused to appeal to President Harding to set aside the sentence which had been imposed by Federal Judge Odlin. The contempt charge was based on a letter Mr. Shannon wrote to the judge asking for an order to destroy some of the evidence which had disappeared after the insular police had made arrests and seized liquor in Volstead cases. Although Judge Odlin gave Shanton until March 18 to enable him to appeal to the President, the former chief decided to take his medicine instead of asking for presidential favor. The San Juan Times says he received 600 callers while in jail and refers to his term there as a "social success."
