Watch Your Battery,
Urges S. R. Walter
Practically all motorists recognize the benefit of Spring overhauling for the car. And within a few weeks, thousands will be attacking this task more or less assiduously according to their enthusiasm or their familiarity with the subject.
But the elimination of carbon, the tightening up of the bearings, bolts and nuts, and the freshening effects of a coat of paint are not sufficient, according to S. R. Walters of the Anaheim Auto Works, local Philadelphia Service Station.
"The battery", says Mr. Walters, "requires more or less attention at all times of the year, but especially after it has stood in the car—idle or otherwise—throughout the winter."
"Corrosion may have taken place around the terminals. This should be carefully scraped off and vaseline spread over them to prevent further trouble of this kind.
"The cradle in which the battery rests, is frequently so badly corroded by acid, that figuratively speaking, the battery is only held by a thread. In fact, I have seen a man's battery drop out on the road because the motorist had failed to examine his cradle.
"The wisest course is to drive the car to the nearest service station either before or after you have completed the rest of the overhauling. Here, an expert battery man can test your battery, tell whether it needs and repairs and in other ways, assures the success of your spring overhauling.
"One way to avoid this—if you lay your car up for the winter—is to store your battery with your battery service station until spring. The cost is nominal, but when you are ready for the touring season, you can be sure your battery is in good condition.
"To sum up, remember your battery is an important part of your car. Give it at least the same attention you give to other parts and you will have no cause to swear at the battery—rather, you will swear by it."
GELNETTE GIVES UP OLDSMOBILE AGENCY
H. S. Gelnette has given up the agency for the Oldsmobile and will concentrate on the H. C. S. and the Fageol tractor, Charles A. Davis of Santa Ana, Oldsmobile distributor, will cover Anaheim hereafter, it is understood.
Gelnette has sold tractors recently to E. Kulpe and S. M. Salisbury, of Long Beach. So far this year he has sold 23 of these tractors, besides various automobiles. He will sell out his used cars also. He does not specialize on used cars, but takes them in in trade.
ALTNOW PURCHASES BATTERY STATION
Walter E. Altnow has purchased the Independent battery station at 301 North Los Angeles-st from Donald Feemster who has had the place for the last six months. Altnow now enters a line of work in which he has had a great deal of experience. For a year he was foreman of the largest battery concern in Arizona and more recently has been working in Anaheim. He was connected with the Ford garage for a while. He first came here 15 years ago.

Existing Owner Is Best “Ad” Prospect
Motor car merchandising today is a far different business from what it was back ten or fifteen years ago in many ways. In the earlier days an unscrupulous salesman would often take out a prospective customer for a demonstration and, if the differential had proven noisy on an earlier test, he would fill up the housing with ground cork and heavy oil and no ton thousand dollar car ever traveled more noiselessly.
Today the motor car distributor, dealer or salesman has a reputation to sustain. He expects to obtain repeat orders from the same owners—perhaps he may be able to sell a car of the same make to the same owner year after year.
Only those who possessed these qualities of good business in the old days have survived the weeding out process. Among the more prominent veterans of the game is George Pearson, Jr., manager of sales for Union Motors, Inc., distributors of the Maxwell. Pearson knew the automobile game in So. Calif. when it was a real game and not entirely a business. This week he is celebrating the anniversary of the opening of the Union Motors as distributors for the Maxwell with a year's record behind him of which any executive might well be proud.
“I think we have done wonderfully well, at that,” said Pearson. “We have built up a family of owners who swear by their cars. They are really our best salesmen and frequently people come in here and buy just because their neighbor owns a Maxwell and is pleased with it. That is the kind of owners that really prove a car's worth.”

“You have long admired the 47 MONTHS IS VESTA USER'S RECORD Forty-seven months' battery service without a recharge! This is the claim of Walter S. Burley of Escondido, according to West Bros., agents for the Vesta storage battery in Orange co. Burley installed the battery on his car at El Paso, Texas, and has just ordered a new one from the local distributors. The battery is guaranteed for two years.
West Bros. declare that they have many other letters of testimony from satisfied users.
IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR VALVE-IN-HEAD
One of the policies constantly adhered to by the Buick Motor Company is always to put better materials and workmanship into their cars than actually is demanded and to submit tighter than any actual use harder than any thanactual use might be imagined would require.
Any car will run under ordinary circumstances and no trouble or deficiency develop. The Buick is built to meet the unusual, the extraordinary emergency and not be found wanting.
The valve-in-head motor was adopted in accordance with his policy of taking no chances in respect to service under extraordinary conditions. Racing drivers prefer it because it consistently develops more power and is a dependable long distance performer. Racing provides the only typical illustration of the extreme stress and strain to which cars may be subjected. The ordinary car owner realizes this in regard to tires, but not so clearly in regard to the car itself.
Have you ever got stuck on a grade, because power was lacking? Or in the mud? The next time you do, remember the Buick and its valve-in-head motor, and don't get caught again.
The Anaheim Auto Co. will cheerfully explain this exclusive motor feature to inquirers.

"You have long admired the smooth power, the quick pickup, the fine appearance and wear resisting qualities of the big, costly six cylinder cars," says the circular.
"The these fine car qualities are now yours, in the Jewett Six, coupled with the low operating costs of a light weight car, and at a price within the reach of everybody. There is no longer any reason why you should do without a six."
"The new Jewett is being built to quality standards in the Paige shops. The Paige organization is squarely behind it.
"It will be on display for the first time in our showroom, during the coming week. We invite you to come and inspect it personally."
"Take this opportunity to find out just how much your 1922 automobile dollar will buy for you."

HIGH RAILROAD FARES
SANTIAGO, Chile, April 8. Considerable press criticism has been directed recently against the federal railway administration for its continued policy in raising passenger rates.
The last raise of 30 per cent or first-class fares, it is stated brings the increase up to 130 per cent of the original first-class tariff, and as a result many of those who formerly always traveled first-class have been driven into the second an in some instances the highly uncomfortable third-class carriages.
