Friday, April 7, 1922 THE ORANGE CITY SPORTS SPARKES & MABEE HURL CHALLENGES Al Sparkes and Roy Mabee have started hurling challenges at one another again. The two big local huskies still appear bent on getting together and finding out just who is the best man of the two. From all appearances, the rivalry is just as keen, if not more so, than it ever was between the two. Both men have kept themselves in fair shape since the last postponement about three months ago. It is hoped, now that Billy Darnley, athletic manager of the Anaheim Athletic club, is able to be on the job once again after being laid up with a broken leg for the last couple of months, that the match can be arranged at a very near date which in all probability seems very likely. FULLERTON RIDERS IN HILL CLIMB SUN. William Green, William Vance, Peter Peterson, and R. G. Peek, all well-known Fullerton rider, have entered the annual Capistrano hill-climb for motorcycles, set for next Sunday, it is announced. It is anticipated that several hundred Fullerton people will be on hand when the program opens at noon. Says Dame FASHION NEW YORK, April 3.—The very latest and most astonishing bit of wearing apparel as yet designed by Fashion for spring wardrobes is the "motor rug," which may be either a top coat or cape, according to Madam's wish. Made of soft, wool-plaid, it is shown in all the color combinations most desired for sport wear. One model wraps the figure like a cape, with a scarf collar crossing at the left side to flutter halfway down the garment. Deep fringe finishes hem and ends of the scarf. To wear with these "motor rugs" the shops are showing small sports bats of wool-lace. White serge appears to be the most desired of all fabrics for sports suits this summer. One sees it again but again in smart show rooms usually combined with some brilliant color, and fashioned into three-piece models. A short, circular coat of the sort so stylish this season was used with one of these suits. It was trimmed with a wide border of red leather medallions appliqued loosely about the bottom of the coat, sleeves and collar. The bodice was finished with an insect of the leather. Another type of suit which applicants take no thought of trouble nor expense to be caused everybody connected with its quaint existence is the demure little coat and jacket of blue whipcord with Eton collar and bell sleeves. It seemed a most sensible little garment, until you noted that the wide, scalloped cuffs, the scalloped outline of the collar, and even the scalloped hem of the coat itself were made of white muslin. These muslin bands were not detachable. Their starchy, whiteness WANTED TO BUY—Valencia grove, Anaheim district. Improvements not essential. Address "Buye." care Plain Dealer. The red hat still holds the center of Fashion's stage. It appears in all shapes, sizes and shades of red, from deep pink to heena. One of a geranium shade, which really is a dark rose, is made of heavy taffeta with a roll back brim of geranium blossoms. A small, straw mushrroom sailor in the new "Ipstick" red is finished with a series of wings, lacquered to an iridescent black and deep blue all around the crown. Another red straw, with a rolling brim, is trimmed with luscious looking cherries. They hang off the left side with a green leaf or two. Finally, there is the big hat, most popular of the moment, with crushy round crown and "bonfire" red brim traveling endlessly in all directions, to end eventually in a binding of gross-grain silk. A great pom-pon of gross-grain silk peaches on the crown. If it's from Witman's it's good. U. S. J. M. COOK 214 S. Citron St. Anaheim, Calif. Pub. March 22-28-30, April 4-6 New York Letter by Larry Johnson Prize NEW YORK, April 7. — Undoubtedly New York's most interesting group of residents—as a group—is composed of fifty-seven men. They are Consuls or Consuls-Generals from as many countries, and they represent not only the whole of the civilized world, but the semi-barbaric, as well. A number of them have private telephone numbers and cannot even be located in that haven of information, the telephone book. Plans are being considered for a Consular Association to bind them closer together and to give them as authoritative standing, which for some reason they have not gained here, they say. Many European posts are more attractive consular positions, because of that very fact. "In Europe we have the same authority we have here," explained one of these foreign representatives, "but there we enjoy a certain amount of recognition which we do not have here. I am convinced that many New Yorker look upon a Consul as a man whose duties are finished when he has signed a passport." Women will scorn the one-time envied "Mrs." and clind to their maiden names if debates mean anything—which of course they don't. Heywood Brown won the debate with Arthur Somers Roche, novelist. Heywood Brown won the debate with Arthur Somers Roche, novelist, the other night. Mr. Broun, whishe wife is "Miss Ruth Hale," contending that such was the proper way, and Mr. Roche insisting that "Mrs. Arthur Somers Roche" has the only right idea. The debate was staged by the Luey Stone League, which is organized to do away with the sign of woman's bondage. Religious subjects are all that interest New York's child artist, eleven-year-old Marie Kempton, whose picture, "Under the Palms," won a prize at last year's Independent Artists Exhibit. Marie has drawn pictures ever since she was old enough to sit beside her father in the organ loft while he played for the church services. Evidently the atmosphere of those hours entered her artistic soul to the exclusion of all other themes. Two years ago, she was about to enter the lists for the Chandler prize with study abroad, but art critics advised against that forced training at her age. Not only spring but summer seems to be in our midst. Coney Island is the hand that turns our calendar leaves here, and last Sunday over 125,000 persons visited that summer time resort, while at least 1,000 of them took a dip in the ocean. There is no spot on this terrestrial globe where a woman may not safely go alone, provided only that she is accompanied by common sense, declares Gertrude Emerson, who has just returned from two years of travel around the world. The small but intrepid Miss Emerson is associate editor of "Asia," and in her wanderings she gave special time and attention to the less frequented parts of the world, where one would grasp at the thought of a lone American woman making her way. She traveled by hotel lobbies! Does anything belong more wholly to our time than the modern hotel lounge? Time was and not so very long ago, when a hotel was a place where one went when business compelled and where ladies rarely were seen alone. Today, the hotel is almost a public utility, a community center, with women on every hand. The lobbies are now show places of beauty and fashion, with hundreds of women who drop in as regularly to sit and chat for an hour or so, as though they were keeping office hours there. This is true of every city in the country, of course, but nowhere is the new condition Los Angeles Markets Butter ... 34 Fresh extras ... 25½ Case count ... 22 Pullets ... 22 Cheese ... 20@25 Hehs under 3¼ lbs. per lb ... 25 Hens, 3¼ lbs. and up, each per lb ... 25 Hens, colored, 4 lbs. and up, each per lb ... 31 Broilers, 1 to 1½ lbs. each ... 23 Broilers, 1½ to 2 lbs. each ... 37 Eryers, 2¼ lbs. to 3 lbs. each ... 40 Roasters, soft bone, over 3 lbs. and up, per lb ... 38 Ducklings, Pekins, 3½ lbs. and up per lb ... 30 Stags, per lb ... 18 Old ducks, 3½ lbs. up, each lb ... 30 Geese ... 30 Young tom turkeys, 13 lbs., and up, each per lb ... 40 Young tom turkeys, dressed, 12 lbs. and up, each per lb ... 45 Hen turkeys, 8 lbs. and up, each per lb ... 37 Hen turkeys, dressed, 7 lbs. and up, each per lb ... 42 Old tom turkeys, per lb ... 35 Small hen turkeys, under 8 lbs., per lb ... 15 Belgian hare, 2 to 3½ lbs each, per lb ... 16 Plain Dealer want ads get results quite so emphatic as on Manhattan Island. When Mitsu put his arms above his head the vials would run up to his arm pits; when he stood erect with his arms down, they would drop down to his knees.
