WELL AT SANTA FE
FLOWS 3200 BBLS.
By Calif. Mining Bureau
In bringing in oil well No.1, "Dallugge" flowing through the water string while balling for test of water shut-off, Amalgamated Oil Co. is the first concern to get a producing well at Santa Fe Springs oil field since Union Oil Co., opened up the highly productive area in October, 1921. The production of the well is reported at 3200 barrels per day of 32 gravity oil. The well is about 3000 feet northwest of the discovery well of Union Oil Co., No.1, "Bell".
Increasing attention is being given to the possibilities also of developing a commercial supply of gas at Santa Fe Springs. General Petroleum Corp. has advised the state oil and gas supervisor that it will test the gas zone in well No.87, "Hill".
The protection and development of the state's reservoirs of natural gas for domestic and industrial uses is a matter of increasing importance. The extent to which this convenient means of fuel and power is used, in preference to coal, wood or oil depends greatly upon the availability of the supply. This is exemplified in So. Calif., where most of the natural gas production of the oil fields is consumed and where 65 per cent of all of the gas of the state, natural and artificial, is used.
During 1920, according to records furnished the state oil and gas supervisor, 37 and a half billion cubic feed of natural gas was produced and sold. This does not include the gas produced and used in operation of oil and gas properties. The production of natural gas was considerably increased in 1921.
Kern, Fresno, Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara and Ventura-co.s hold the present development sources of natural gas.
The gas producing area of the Buena Vista hills in Kern-co is the largest developed field in the state. Gas is transported over 100 miles from this field, by pipeline, to the Los Angeles district. This gas area extends in a narrow belt along the axis of the United and Honolulu anticlines of the Midway oil field and covers an area of possibly ten square miles.

This gas area extends in a narrow belt along the axis of the United and Honolulu anti-clines of the Midway oil field and covers an area of possibly ten square miles. The natural gas reservoirs of the Elk hills oil field in Kern-co., lie principally within Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 and as yet have not been sufficiently developed to determine the total areal limits or probable potential capacity. Two areas of production, separated by five miles of undrilled land, indicate a possibly greater supply of gas, when the intervening expanse is drilled, than that of Buena Vista hills. The first gas production in Elk hills came from several wells on the Hay lease of Standard Oil Co., Sec. 36, T. 30 S., R. 23 E., M. D. B. & M'. These wells are remarkably consistent and therefore important producers of gas.
One hundred millions cubic feet of gas is daily run into commercial gathering lines from Buena Vista and Elk Hills areas. The greater part of this gas is used in the San Joaquin valley for operating steam plants to generate electric power and for other industrial and domestic purposes. About one-third of the output is transported for use in the Los Angeles district.
In Los Angeles and Orange-co.s, the Coyot hills, Montebello and Richfield oil fields furnish considerable gas. About 45,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas is produced and used.

district. These fields turn out about three million cubic feet per day above the quantities used in operation of the oil fields.
The gas production of the Coalinga field in Fresno-co is only sufficient to meet the local needs of the oil industry.
In northern California no natural gas supply if importance has thus far been developed. It may be said, however, that favorable clues of possible underground reservoirs of gas exist in an number of places in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys. Gas under considerable pressure was discovered in the prespect wells drilled at Buttonwillow, in Kern-co; natural gas has appeared in a number of wells drilled near Tulare Lake in Tulare and Kings-co.s. Numerous water wells drilled thruout the San Joaquin valley have shown some indications of gas which at least warrant careful study, and investigation as to the source and probable supply.
Some gas has been developed and produced near Stockton and a small quantity of gas was produced from a well drilled in Sec. 24, T. 5 N., R. 1 W., S. B. B. & M. in Solano-co. The Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is now prospecting for gas in a well being drilled in the Montezuma hills in Sec. 2, T. 5 N., R. 1 E., M. D. B., & M.
Practically all of the gas consumed in northern California and a large proportion of the gas used in the gas producing counties, including Los Angeles, is manufactured from crude petroleum or refinery residuum. Natural gases now being produced and utilized range in heat value from 800 to 1200 b.t.u. which is considerably higher than that of manufactured gas. In many cases the consumer buys a mixture of natural and manufactured gas.
Under ordinary conditions, therefore, the price and the heat value of most of our gas for domestic and industrial uses is not only dependent upon available supplies of natural gas but also upon petroleum.

The city of Long Beach is now getting some natural gas from the Long Beach oil field. Results of drilling in the Long Beach field indicate a gas bearing horizon of importance above the producing oil sands. The Santa Fe Springs field has already been mentioned as a probable source of natural gas.
In Ventura-co the gas production of the various fields is entirely consumed locally. The Ventura field supplies some gas to the city of Ventura. The cities of Santa Maria and Lompoc, in Santa Barbara-co and San Luis Obispo are supplied with residual gas, following removal of the gasoline through absorption plants, from the oil fields of the Santa Maria county.
