Unusual Plot in “The Silent Call” John Bowers and Kathryn McGuire in “The Silent Call” Extremely unusual in the plot of its narrative, "The Silent Call," the feature attraction at the Fairyland Theatre this week, also has an unusual cast consisting of seven men, one girl and a remarkable police dog. The photoplay is the first Lawrence Trimble-Jane Murfin Production presented by H. O. Davis and distributed through Associated First National Pictures, Inc. Slam of Door Heard Clear Around the World Proves to Be Keynote to Nazimova Photoplay Ibsen Idea Developed Into Present Day Status of Women In All Circles When Henrik Ibsen wrote the words, "The sound of a door is heard from below," as the finishing touch to his now famous drama, "A Doll's House," he made a phrase the echo of which has been heard around the world, and laid the corner-stone of an idea that has developed in the last forty-odd years, into the present day status of women in the home, in the business world, in politics and in the nation's life in general. For several years the startling realistic portrayal of Nora, the doll-wife, as presented on the stage by Nazimova, the noted Russian actress, has made this remarkable character more and more familiar to the American public. Nazimova has won her greatest distinction in this role, and no one ever has given a more clear-cut impression than she of the petted and spoiled young wife dependent on her husband's every whim and wish till the great crisis comes, and she suddenly awakens to the right of every woman to create her own destiny, to develop her own personality, and to live her own life along lines her conscience may dictate. And now Nazimova has transferred this characterization to the motion picture film, and her screen version of this great Ibsen drama, produced by her own company for United Artists Corporation is seen today at the California theatre. So consummate an actress is Nazimova and so perfect her understanding and interpretation of the role of the doll-wife's subjection and ultimate revolt against the standards under which woman existed at the time Ibsen wrote "A Doll's House," that the character has lost none of its realism, none of its appealing qualities, in its transfer to the film. Nazimova and her director, Charles Bryant, have adored exceptionally close to the drama as presented on the speaking stage, and every detail of characterization of the outstanding characters, Helmer Torvald and Nora, the doll-wife, is kept intact through the superb artistry of Nazimova and her leading support, Alan Hale. From the first action in the play, when Nora hears of her husband's promotion to be manager of the bank in which he has been employed, and believes that her fondest hopes for him have come to realization; through his illness when she forges to obtain money to save his life; through all her secret saving and ALSO— LARRY SEMON in “THE SHOW” A Riot from Start to Finish.
