MONDAY, April 3, 1922 SPORTS ANAHEIM DEFEATS RIVERSIDE AFTER 9 VERY FAST INNINGS Basball bugs yesterday afternoon at Anaheim high school field had every thrill the national pastime affords when the home team came from behind and tied the score in the eighth, then put over the winning tally in a ninth inning finish. The competition, the recently organized Riverside Elks team, is the best aggregation of lodgemen the locals have bumped into recently. The pitcher, Troy Vintage, has a puzzling side-arm delivery that had the Anaheim heroes baffled for seven innings. Mr. Vintage and his team, with the 3 to 0 score in their favor, went into the eighth inning feeling like a million dollars. Then the fun began. Captain Buster Callan walked. The one and only Bush, always playing the game and again demonstrating the old slogan of "Run It Out," shot past the first baseman who had picked up a grounder and that he had plenty of time to tag him out. Then Eddie Dunn, got his eye on the ball for a bingle that filled the bases. Hughes was hit by a pitched ball, forcing in a run. Callahan drove a sacrifice fly to rightfield, scoring Bush. With Dun on third, Hughes started to steal second. He slowed up to allow Dunn to steal home and then made the third out. With a play at second and home plate almost at the same instant, Umpire Jimmy Heffern couldn't see both ways at the same time. The question was whether Hughes was out at second before Dun scored. Heffern decided the tally counted, Riverside athletes were much chagrined. The winning tally was made in the ninth when Pendleton led off with a triple down the lift foul line and scored on Glenn Callan's out, pitcher to first. The Riverside aggregation seems to be a real ball team. PLACE YOUR CLASSIFIED ADS BEFORE 13,000 READERS. NEW TODAY FOR SALE—Dahlia bulbs. Phone 348-W or call 219 S. Lemon-st. MARK BEVERLY HILLS SPEEDWAY, April 3.—Establishing a new world’s record for 50 miles Tommy Milton in his Durant Special was victor in the sprint races here. He averaged 115.2 miles in the final feature 50-mile sprint, compared with 112 miles, the previous mark established by Eddie Hearne. Fifteen thousand saw the 11 speed kings fight for the championship. Milton was fully two miles ahead of Jimmy Murphy of San Francisco, who was second. Harry Hartz, Bordino and Sarles were third, fourth and fifth, respectively. The wheels of the cars of Bordino, Art Klein and Frank Elliott became locked on the home stretch in the 22nd lap and it was only by a miracle that they escaped death or horrible injury. Bordino’s car ran into the other two, and all three turned three times around and than, without overturning, went into the pit together. The cars were considerably damaged, but the drivers escaped with minor injuries. Bordino by a few inches won the first sprint heat of 25 miles. Milton hugging him in second place. Milton won the second heat. Murphy the third and Frank Elliott the fourth. Results in the form heats were: First heat (25 miles) Pietro Bordino, first. Tommy Milton, second. Jimmy Murphy, third. Frank Elliott, fourth. Jerry Wonderlich, fifth. Harry Hartz, sixth. Time—13:06.68. Average speed—114.4 miles per hour. Second heat (25 miles)—Milton, first. Murphy, second. Elliott, third.
