Saturday, April 1, 1922 BANDIT KILLED BY L. A. POLICEMAN LOS ANGELES, April 1.—The police killed a bandit and recovered a stolen auto yesterday, following the holding up of an oil station of the Standard Oil Company at Avenue Twenty and Pasadena avenue. The policemen were given the number of the holdup man's car, which he had stolen, by G. E. Maddox of 3304 Granada street, who had come to get his tank filled, and headed off the two robbers at Mission road and Lincoln avenue. The identity of the slain man could not be learned from his clothing or its contents. The car belonged to Mrs. Charles S. Thomas of 2420 South Western avenue. The other bandit escaped in the duel with the police. CHANDLER FACTORY FORCES INCREASED First to feel depression, first to put its house in order, the automobile industry is first to come out of the woods and turn the corner to new prosperity. Not only has it stabilized prices in its own line, but the effect of its price recessions and the national attention focused on them by the press of the country, has largely influenced price stabilization in other lines, according to a statement issued by The Chandler Motor Car Co. A recent survey by the Department of Labor points out that unemployment is being relieved more rapidly in the two great automotive centers of the United States—Cleveland and Detroit—that in any other section. In Cleveland not only is the automobile industry showing a quicker recovery than other industries, but it is aiding other lines. For instance, the increasing demand of automobile builders for sheet steel is adding thousands of men to the pay-rolls of the steel mills. Hundreds of men are being added by paint companies to care for the mounting demand for automobile paints and varnishes. Another indication that the auto is the better business pace-maker is the improved demand for tires from Akron manufacturers. Some makers say that the orders booked for February were 200 per cent larger than for the corresponding period of 1921, and February business was approximately 40 per cent larger than that of January. The combined production of the three largest rubber companies of Akron is now 55,000 tires daily. The automobile industry is now approximately at normal production. Indications point to continued, and even increased activity until early fall. Two reasons are advanced by men prominent in the industry for the active buying of cars. First, the widespread belief that the country has started on a new era of prosperity. Second, that the prices of automobiles are now stabilized. First, the widespread belief that the country has started on a new era of prosperity. Second, that the prices of automobiles are now stabilized. A painstaking survey recently completed by the Guaranty Trust Company, one of America's foremost financial institutions, says, "Approximate stabilization of automobile prices is believed to have been reached in the industry." "Inventories have been well liquidated and the industry brought to a sound position, where no further general price reduction appears to exist." Five nationally known car-makers have actually increased prices recently. It weighs a ton and one-half and has Miller cord tires. The steering gear is the irreversible type, worm and gear, with good strong connections and a big steering wheel. The frame is made of pressed steel, channel section, side members 4 7-16 inches wide, 3-16 inch gauge, supported with four heavy cross members. Ant detail with the Guaranty Trust report. It is significant that the Chandler is making more cars than any of the twelve Cleveland automobile manufacturers by a considerable margin, that the factory force was tripled in January, and the production was increased 50 per cent the middle of February. The public has been quick to appreciate the pronounced beauty of the new Chandler Six, its increased strength, and most of all, its exceptional value. The front axle is a Heavy 1-beam forging made in our own forge plant; heat treated, with roller bearings in wheels. The rear axle has an extra heavy malleable iron housing with Timken-David Brown worm drive. The factor of safety in this axle would warrant its use on the average three-ton truck. The whealbase is 124 inches, and the body platform has a loading displacement of 47 square feet. In many cases, the loading space is what limits the capacity of the truck, unless the material handled is of an unusually heavy nature, and the liberal loading space on the Maxwell truck puts it on a par with many trucks designed to carry a much heavier load. The car sells at $1356.50 here. The firm has sold these cars: Maxwell touring cars to F. L. Young of the Anaheim Beef Company, F. Orbach of the Golden State Realty Company, and Mrs. A.
