LAW MAY REFEREE CARMEL BATTLES CARMEL, Cal., March 31.—The stern hand of the law may stage the next round of the battle between Literature and Art. The district attorney of Monterey county was today reported making an investigation of the fictile duel in which Harry Leon Wilson, creator of "Ma Pettingill" and "Ruggles of Rec Gap," humorous literary masterpieces and Theodore M. Crilley, former hotel man and now landscape artist, were principals. The feud between the two men was well known here in the local colony. Last fall the Open Air theatre, a community affair, presented "Pomander Walk," a romantic play. Mrs. Wilson was chosen for the role of heroine of the play and Crilley played opposite her as hero. Wilson is said to have become jealous and this latter fanned itself into bitter enmity. PREFERS DEATH TO PRISON SENTENCE LOS ANGELES, March 31.—Dead than sent to the penitentiary, claring that she would rather be Mrs. Julia Johnston, convicted slayer of her husband, appeared before Judge Avery today to beg for mercy inspired by the threefold need of her child, her aged mother and herself. Before she went into court the convicted woman declared her horror of the life that looms dangerously near her. "I would rather be dead than go to the penitentiary," she cried, as she turned to enter the court where judgment was to be pronounced on her. From the very first this quality has been one of the most notable characteristics of Hudson cars. Four years ago this announcement of the first Super-Six marked a new epoch in automobile design. By the use of an exclusive Hudson principle a motor was built which gave 72 per cent more power than other motors of equal size. This was accomplished through the minimizing of destructive vibration and without sacrificing simplicity or increasing weight. The result was the supreme endurance which has been demonstrated repeatedly in the most terrific tests to which any car ever has been subjected. Everyone recalls how Hudson stock cars set new records for speed, among them 1819 miles in twenty-four hours. The run from San Francisco to New York and return in ten days and twenty-one hours remains unmatched although many efforts to better this time have been made by others. In addition a Hudson stock car in an acceleration test went from a standing start to fifty miles an hour in 16.2 seconds and from a standing start to sixty miles in twenty-three seconds, establishing new world's records. Also—a Hudson Super-Six special broke all records in a climb to the "Top-of-the-World" up Pike's Peak, 2½ miles above the sea level, in 18 minutes, 24 seconds. This record was made in competition with many of the most cars built. The Super-Six was not designed as a racing machine. It was put on the speedways, not to display mere brute speed, but to conclusively demonstrate its endurance. The snappy acceleration, and wonderful hill climbing ability has been a source of intense satisfaction." FRANK R. DRAKE 1106 Eim Street, Manchester N H. Townsend & Medbery, Inc. 226 S. The estate is valued at approximately $100,000. The question to be decided is whether Franz, the 11-year-old boy who is known as the son of Rosa, had two mothers or a mother and an aunt. The amount of Franz's inheritance and the interests of other relatives hinges upon the answer to that question. Physicians say only an autopsy can determine the answer and are seeking permission to hold a post-mortem inquiry. Some physicians assert that the twins were one individual personality. Others declared they constituted two separate entities. Jess Rose, who managed the twins on their vaudeville and museum appearances for 12 years, declares that Rosa was the guiding genius of the two. What Rosa would think, she said, Josefa would do; when Rosa became bungry Josefa would demand food; when Rosa willed to walk, Josefa would automatically step forward; Rosa always planned and Josefa put the plan, without even words to convey the suggestion, into execution. "The fact that both women were able to nurse the child at birth," Rose said, "proves the intimacy of their physical relationship." PINEAPPLE FOR 40,000 KRONEN VIENNA, March 21. — A man walked into the bar of one of the big hotels and placed a pineapple on the table. "One pound sterling or 40,000 kronen," he said. There was no sale, but the incident serves to illustrate the chaotic idea of values prevalent here. An Austrian smelled it gratefully, remarking: "It's the first one I have seen since 1914." MEASURES LOSS A gauge has been invented to measure the loss of compression in gasoline engine cylinders and to show whether it is due to the pistons or valves leaking. "The Spenders" is seen today at the Fairland, It is a Benj. B. Hampton production featuring Nile Welch, Joseph Dowling, Claire Adams, Robert McKim and others. SEEK VETERANS FOR FARMS SEATTLE, March 31.—Ex-service men are being sought by the American Legion here to take over farms on the Yakima Indian reservation, renewal of leases of which has been refused former Japanese tenants by the state. Preference is being given disabled and malmed soldiers. OBSERVATION OF MOON Fifteen years of observation by an English scientist has disproved an old theory that a full moon radiates enough heat to cause clouds to disappear by drawing moisture from them. SWISS LOCOMOTIVE The Swiss government railways are experimenting with a locomotive in which a steam turbine revolves a shaft that is connected by wheels' connecting rods. POWERFUL BURNER The burner of a new gasoline torch is so constructed that it heats the fuel inside the can, causing a gas pressure that blows the flame without compressing the air in the can. IRON ORE FIELDS South African iron ore fields may be developed and some railways electrified by harnessing the Orange river at the northern boundary of Cape Colony. PUMP IN SILVER MINE Aftr it had been under water for 17 years a pump in a Montana silver mine was cleaned and put in service again as though it had stopped for only a few hours. SCOOP LIFTS FISH A Massachusetts man is the inventor of a motor operated scoop to lift fish attracted to it by a stream of water over the face of a dam. How Would You Say It? IS ENGLISH WELL TAUGHT? Writing to a New York newspaper, a correspondent says: "Today's newspaper contains the statement that the public schools of this city graduated a record number of pupils yesterday, and on the editorial page of the same issue appears a letter in which the superintendents are blamed for the poor English of high school students. 'May I add this bit of personal experience. Two girls brought their autograph albums to me. They have just been graduated from a public school of this city, and I found these 'gems' among the verses signed 'Your Fellow Graduate': 'May you sailed the sea of life.' 'Climb the latter of success.' Flowers may whither. Both girls expressed a desire to attend high school, but finally circumstances compete them to go to work. They appear bright and intelligent and expressed a fondness for study, but one said: 'My father says, "Youse must work now, but youse can go to evening school."'
