QUIZ ACTRESS AGAIN IN TAYLOR MURDER LOS ANGELES, March 10.—Retracing their steps in their investigation of the circumstances surrounding the murder of William Desmond Taylor, film director, detectives working on the case today questioned persons who figured in early stages of the probe. Interrogation of a film actress and her chauffeur mentioned early in the case was continued today by detectives to co-ordinate conflicting statements declared to have been made by the witnesses in the case. Interest in the suicide of an unidentified man believed possibly to be Edward P. Sands, missing secretary of the director, wanted in connection with the murder probe, was revived today when it was said that a photograph of the suicide victim is expected here shortly. All questions as to the possibility of the suicide victim being Sands will then be settled, it was said. AT ANAHEIM HOSPITAL New patients at the Anaheim Sanitarium include: Mrs. F. P. BRITISH SECRETARY PUNISHED LONDON, March 10.—Advocacy of publication of a message to the Delhi government urging the restoration of Turkey to her prewar position in Europe and Asia Minor has been punished by the British government with dismissal of Edwin Montagu, secretary of State for India. Montagu resigned, but under pressure, it is believed. Publication of the message seriously interfered with the Near East conference to be held in Paris on March 22, Austen Chamberlain declared. AUTO SMASHES HIG WINDOW A car driven by G. Smith made an effort to turn on too short a curve at the alley just south of the S. Q. R. Store, and smashed into the plate glass of the Ross Bros. garage, breaking the glass. No one was hurt. The statement of the youth came after testimony had been introduced to show that a baby would be born to the defendant. Mrs. Sampson's mother came into court and filed an answer, objecting to the proposed annulment, and the case promised to be a test of the new state law raising the age at which youths may marry without the consent of their parents. Under the old law a marriage was valid if the boy was 18 and the girl 15, but the law which went into effect a few months ago made the age limit 21 and 18. SHOWERS TONIGHT Unsettled weather tonight and Saturday, probably with showers. That was the forecast announced today for Los Angeles and vicinity by Col. H. B. Hersey, government meteorologist, in charge of the federal weather station in the Central building, Sixth and Main streets. The forecast for Southern California was: "Tonight probably showers. Saturday fair." MOTHER PEEVED AT SON'S MARRIAGE SAN DIEGO, Cal., Mar. 10.—"Yes, I have a son Robert in New York," said Mrs. John D. Savage at her La Jolla home here today. "I have not heard of his marriage there. He has stated that he is waiting to hear from his mother." Mrs. Savage was told. "Well, he'll wait a long time," was the instant rejoinder. Mrs. Savage thereupon thanked her informant and hung up. SKYSCRAPER GARAGE NEXT ON PROGRAM (Continued from Page 1) that dealers had contracts that were liabilities rather than assets. Then the trade acceptance came into vogue with one result, that the manufacturer unloaded on the dealer. Now a wise manufacturer studies his dealer and the community. Accessories Business. The battery business is growing fast, with new shops constantly being started. The sales manager for a well known motorist told Martland that his business the past January equalled that of the first four months of 1921. Human Equations Knocking. The public must know that the automobile business is conducted in a legitimate way. Knocking of every sort hurts. The business itself is injured when a man raps a competitor. Automobiles became safe in Portland when all the dealers stopped telling prospects that some other machine was unsafe. The employee must sell himself, but he must sell his agency or shop first. Don't knock your co-worker. The customer is the man who pays the salary. Courtesy—it is the cheapest thing the industry has. An employee should not criticize the way his place is run. Loyalty—it is an asset. The sacrifice hit in baseball has its application in every place of business. Big business and little business—each is necessary to the other. The latter is the tail of the kite. Co-operation—the switch engine makes a lot of noise, but it never gets out of the railway yard. Every individual and unit of business in the industry must work together. The speech of M. E. Drumm, on character analysis, was practically the same as the one he delivered at the last joint meeting of employers and employees. In general the theory of character analysis is that, while all persons are different, they may be put into five classes, according to profile—concave, convex, plane or composites of concave and convex—and studied according to color of hair, profile, head shape, texture and consistency of flesh and person, and expression. These physical traits have corresponding mental and moral CALIF. MAY GROW OWN HARDWOODS SACRAMENTO, March 8.—California may grow its own hardwoods if an experiment now under way is successful states Woodbridge Metcalf, Associate Professor of Forestry of the University of California Experimental Station. And experimental area established near Fort Bragg by the Union Lumber Company has been planted to six important eastern hardwoods. The Lumber Company is furnishing the land and trees and the entire area is under the scientific direction and supervision of the Division of Forestry of the Agricultural Experiment Station. If the redwood region can advantageously produce these timbers, it will save the transcontinental haul of a very bulky product. WOLVERINES PICNIC Dr. M. R. A STANDARD QUALITY PRODUCT MOTHER PEEVED AT SON'S MARRIAGE SAN DIEGO, Cal., Mar. Robert Savage, university student, and his 17-year-old girl bride, who formerly was Miss Genevieve Mitchell could not be located today. Edward Savage, brother of the young husband, was "out of town." At the office of Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., it was said that Mrs. Savage was in the chorus of "Sally" as usual last night and that she probably would be there again tonight. Young Savage is from Pasadena, Cal., and his family controls the immensely wealthy John Savage Co., iron and steel producers in the West. PARIS WELCOMES RICH AMERICANS NICE, March 10.—A squint down any page of a Riviera fashionable hotel's register is like picking the cast of characters for a dramatization of "Who's Who." Only this year anybody would think he had stumbled into the American edition. More and more Americans have been coming to spend all or part of their winters among the colorful bays of the Riviera. Although the fashionable winter population of Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo, Beaulieu and Menton continues to be predominantly English, each season finds more and more Americans of all sorts that travel—idle wealthy, pleasure seekers, lovers of color and the artistic, or just tired business men searching relaxation from worries, winter and winstelessness in Europe's playground. SACRAMENTO, March 10.—Upon his return to Berkeley today, President David P. Barrows of the University of California announced that the Regents of the University, at their regular meeting held in Los Angeles yesterday, had adopted a policy of development for the institutions under the University located in Southern California. The rapid growth of the Southern Branch and the still inadequate provision for students seeking instruction there, they believe, will warrant the University asking from the three next ensuing Legislatures certain provisions additional to the general measures for the support of the University. The rapid growth of the Southern Branch and the still inadequate provision for students seeking instruction there, they believe, will warrant the University asking from the three next ensuing Legislatures certain provisions additional to the general measures for the support of the University. Under this program, the end of eight years will see a greatly expanded University institution in Southern California embracing instruction in three colleges: the Teachers’ College; the Junior College of Letters and Science; and the Junior College of Agriculture. It is believed that the development here recommended will, by 1929, be adequate to take charge of that considerable body of students who will prefer to receive Junior College and Teachers’ instruction in Southern California rather than in Berkeley. DRINK TO HEALTH OF GIRL CHICAGO, March 9.—Every fifth drink shipped in Chicago’s Greenwich Village today was to the “health” of Miss Mary Virginia Lester, 17-year-old artist model and writer. Miss Lester took poison after an unrequited love affair and was near death. In a farewell note to her sweet-heart and other “villagers” she asked: “Would it be asking too much to request that every fifth drink be drunk to me?” Plain Dealer for Good Job Printing. A.
