DURANTS SUPREME IN RAINY WEATHER The characteristics and qualities of construction of the Durant Special, which Tommy Milton drove in last Sunday's rainy day no-race contest on the Beverly Hills Speedway, are not peculiar to the racing car, James E. Appleby, northern Orange county agent for the Durant, points out. Milton led his competitors with an average speed of more than 112 miles per hour, and held firmly to a wet track, largely because of the perfect distribution of weight and the low center of gravity of the car. The Durant stock car possesses these same advantages to the same degree, although it naturally cannot show equal speed, and Appleby or his men can prove it to anybody on pavement or road any wet day that may be. On a dry road, the friction of the tires suffices to hold any car in place and the differences among cars are not evident. But accidents due to skidding, etc., occur in wet weather for the most part. The Durant stock car is built lower than any other. The overhead valve, demonstrated long since on all racing cars, enabling a power 27 per cent greater than the ordinary valve, was valuable in enabling the Durant Special to show up so well. The new cheap car of the Durant Motor Company will be on exhibition in Los Angeles on March 9. Its name READS WIRELESS SANS INSTRUMENTS ST. PAUL, Minn., Mar. 4. — Floyd Hanson has startled scientists here by reading wireless telephone waves with no other instrument than his ear. Hanson is a barber and said today he was unable to explain his peculiar ability to detect wireless waves. "The first time I knew about it was when I heard grand opera music a few nights ago. Two days later I read of wireless grand opera concerts being given out at Chicago. Then I realized it was what I heard." Scientists plan tests to determine just how well developed Hanson's sixth sense may be. SAVES FROM DEATH DALLAS, Texas, March 4. — Mrs. Fred McCormick, 38, whose husband shot and killed himself last night after he fired a bullet at her, was saved by a silver dollar in her pocketbook, it was learned today. The bullet fired at her struck the dollar after passing through her arm and was deflected from the direction of her heart. The bullet was found in the pocketbook. is not yet announced. It will retail here at $495. Four models of it will be on sale—sedan, coupe, touring and roadster. The present $1095 car is in only three models, the roadster being omitted for the present. Within two weeks the new $1895 Durant 6, with Anstead motor, the best made, and a guaranteed possible speed of 80 miles an hour, will be shown here in five bodies, including five-passenger and seven-passenger touring models. Pease-Kolberg & Company West Chapman Street, Next Santa Fe Tracks, Orange "CAR'S AS GOOD AS FIRM SELLING IT" "A used car is only as good as the reputation of the firm that sells it." This is the slogan of George Duntom, local Ford agent, who has opened a used car department on the lot to the north of the Rimpau building on North Los Angeles street. Not only a good slogan, but sound common sense, we'd say. There is a good-sized variety of makes on hand, from roadsters of previous years to late models of sedan. The firm makes it a point to keep the turnover as frequent as possible, and prices are $50 to $100 lower than the prevailing averages in the city. In addition to the regular clientele, therefore, Dunton is building up a new clientele of owners of cars other than Fords and new buyers who don't feel they can afford a new car. Re-conditioned cars are among the number on sale, and while no guarantee is given, these cars are believed to be as reliable as any rebuilt cars on the market. Deliveries of cars during February totaled 40, including 26 new pleasure cars, six tractors and eight used machines. Two carloads of tractors now are en route to the local agency. An additional explanation of the way the tractor is selling may be seen in the fact that Ford himself has a farm, the facts concerning his operation of which are just coming to light. His out-of-town home is on the farm where he was born, between Detroit and Dearborn. Here he meets the farmer's problems first hand. He has multiplied the acreage of the old place and now has 9,000 acres, of which 5,000 are kept under careful cultivation. Here he has a grain elevator, a flour mill with a daily capacity of 100 barrels of Ford flour, 90 per cent of which is sold to employees; and every modern farm device to run it. He says 21 days are enough to complete all the farm work needed. P. A. CURTIS BUYS MAXWELL P. A. Curtis of the Anaheim Beef Company, purchased a Maxwell sedan Reo Speed Wagon Stands Hard Test One of the greatest advances made in the history of fire-fighting apparatus was the change from the old type of steam hydraulic pumps to those driven by internal combustion (gasoline) engines. This change produced a much more powerful pump, with less expenditure of room and less weight. Then came the department and battalion chiefs with their requirements for a speedy car that could be easily handled in city traffic or on wet streets and that would stand up under the strenuous service conditions of a metropolitan fire department. In placing a recent order for equipment to fill the needs of the department and battalion chiefs the City of Los Angeles had these special requirements in mind and purchased seven Reo "Six" roadsters and a Reo "Six" touring car, thus following the lead of many of the larger eastern cities which have standardized on Reo equipment, even to engines and hose wagons. Manager Byron C. Foy of the local Reo factory branch, in speaking of this order said: "Drivers of trucks who have handled various types, including the Reo Speed wagon claim that they can make better time through crowded streets with a Reo than with any other car because of its special braking equipment. Its durdiness and long life are also important factors, as dependability is an absolute necessity in such service. "In addition to this order we just delivered to the Los Angeles Fire Department, we sold a completely equipped apparatus, mounted on a Reo speed wagon chassis to the town of Montebello." FRANKLINS OF CLOSED TYPE Two Nash cars have been delivered last week by the Bob White Company: A five-passenger touring six, to C. C. Lamb, and a five-passenger touring four to F. A. Criss. Criss is a derrick builder of Brea for the Union Oil Company. A Franklin sedan arrived this week and a carload of Nash cars, comprising one sedan and two touring cars, will get in next week. The general public doesn't know that the Franklin Automobile Company was the first to manufacture sedans. The company first offered this car in 1913, making 13 closed cars that year. In 1921 52 per cent of the cars put out by the company were closed cars. Closed cars represented 1.5 per cent of total production in 1915, says the Class Journal Company. There was no change in 1916, but for the succeeding years, 1917, 1918 ,1919, 1920 and 1921, the percentage of production representing closed cars was 4 per cent, 7 per cent, 10 per cent, 18 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively. Commenting on these figures, S. E. Ackerman, sales manager for the Franklin Automobile Company, has recalled the spirit of skepticism with which the Sedan, which was first offered the American public in 1913 by the Franklin Automobile Company, was received. During that year, the Company built and sold thirteen closed cars. Later the Brougham was added to this line, and more recently the Touring-Limousine and the Coupe. Statistics produced by the Commercial Research Department of the Franklin Company show that growth in the number of enclosed cars produced by the Franklin Company each year since 1914 is as follows: 1915, 13 per cent; 1916, 11 per cent; 1917, 21 per cent; 1918, 31 per cent; 1919, 28 per cent; 1920, 45 per cent; 1921, 52 per cent. Numerous, narrow escapes from disaster kept the vast crowd on the constant qui vive. Numerous skids and slips were indulged in by the drivers, but skill and brawn always came to the rescue and injury was averted. When the race was called 'no contest' Milton was in his 94th lap, tagged by Hartz and Thomas in the order named. Milton's average time was 109.8 miles per hour when the end came, and this is considered a real marvel of speed when the condition of the track and weather is taken into consideration. Given a dry track, it looks as if the winner will run about 114 miles to the sixty minutes or even better. But for tire trouble Piétro Bordino, the entry from Italy about whom the spotlight has centered for the past few weeks, would have been pressing the leaders for first honors. Bordino's Fiat responded nobly to every request of its driver and was only in a back position because of trips to the pits for a change of tires. Bordino showed that he has a speedy car and the nerve that is requisite for a champion, and Sunday's race may tell an altogether different story. The drivers who will line up for Sunday's race will be competing for a cash purse of $25,000 to be distributed according to position. It is expected that at Sunday's battle many spectators from out of town will be present as so much pit drama has already been indulged in that the event has called for unusual interest.
