WOMAN UNEARTHS
MASCULINE SECRET
Here, women folks, if you want some advice in buying things for the men, listen to what an expert has to offer on the subject of pajamas.
And this expert on a thorotly masculine bit of attire is not a man at all, but a woman; it's Mrs. Edith Platzer of the men's furnishing department of Schuneman & Evans.
Have you always bought white or plain pajamas for the masculine side of the family, working on the theory that such would appeal to his practical nature? It's very likely you did, but at that you may have done wrong.
When men buy pajamas for themselves many of them buy the brighter colors—pinks, blues, lavenders and saffrons, according to Mrs. Platzer. And the popularity of the brighter colors is increasing, she says.
Plain white or pongee silk pajamas are popular with men of very quiet tastes who do not prefer the "loud" colors, says Mrs. Platzer. But even these, they prefer quiet colors like to have a bit of bright purple trimming to enliven the garment a bit.
And not always does the plain appearing man pick the sedate-hued pajamas. Some of them give clerks a considerable surprise when they pick out the brightest garments in the store.
TITIAN HEAD HAS JUST BEEN FOUND
PARIS, Mar. 3. — A magnificent fragment of one of Titian's masterpieces has just been discovered by Prof. Loula Hourlieq at the Paris School of Fine Arts.
It is the head and bust of a woman who figured in the foreground of a battle picture which the great artist painted for the Republic of Venice and which was bung in the Grand Council hall of the Doge's palace. In 1577 the work which had taken Titian 20 years to complete (1517-1537) was destroyed by fire.
A copy of the picture, however, as well as written descriptions prevailed in the Great Eastern was built—even the present generation remembers her as the world's greatest ship 60 years ago—she was finished like a ship with low-celled rails. A copy of the picture, however, as well as written descriptions preserved at Florence, bears witness to its grandiose conception and brilliant execution. The principal figures described by his contemporaries are easily recognizable, notably that of a girl in the foreground of the picture. Even amid the fierce clash of battle Titian could not forbear painting one of those types of feminine beauty with which his genius is associated.

MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho, Mar. 2.—Railway officials here are looking forward to one of the biggest gold mining rushes in western mining history. The stampede is expected to start with the melting of snow in the early spring and will be directed toward the town of Rocky Bar, just 100 miles across the Nevada border line and 65 miles north of this transcontinental railroad point.
Ten years ago, Idaho made its last gold rush.

build steamships that have lofty interiors like a modern hotel, or metropolitan club. These pictures, taken on the latest ocean levitator to come out, the Homeric of the White Star Line, which is double the size of the Great Eastern, show the degree of spaciousness and luxury that the ship of 1922 has attained. The picture with the colonnade was taken in the ship's lounge, or social hall; the other is in the dining room, which seats 500 people at small tables.
SMALL TOWN RAILWAY AGENT HARD WORKER
Have a little sympathy for the railroad agent.
For, according to John Glasgow, Santa Fe official, the small town railroad agent is the hardest worked man in the world, barring none.
Directly responsible to 11 bosses, the duties of the agent are sundry and arduous, sleeping and eating when he can, and yet on top of it all many survive. Some of the biggest railroad men in the country today made their start as agent in some small town out on the line.
You see him when you're traveling thru a small town, standing out on the railroad platform; a bunch of shipping manifests and passenger tariffs clutched in his hand, watching the train go by. But don't think that he's loafing then.
One of the duties of the railroad agent is to see that every train passes thru his town without a hitch and before the observation platform of your train is out of sight, he's sent a message to the dispatcher, giving the train's time, to show whether he is running on schedule, and a number of other details.
TO BUILD HARBOR ALONG CHILE COAST
SAN FRANCISCO, Mar. 3. — Valparaiso, Chile, is making extended plans to provide herself with one of the best harbors on the Pacific coast, according to reports reaching here.
Valparaiso's harbor is at present not safe during a heavy gale. When a northern begins to blow vessels in the harbor usually put out to sea to avoid being beached.
The government will shortly begin the construction of a series of breakwaters which will make Valparaiso a fine harbor in all weather. Financiers are also making plans for an extensive system of electric railways back into the interior, which will connect directly with the waterfront, aiding in the handling of cargoes.
Valparaiso is now regularly a port of call for the Toyo Kisen Kaisha vessel, the Grange steamship.

Phonograph Records have been made in Chicago of grand operatings during their performance instead of requiring all the singers to aim their voices into a horn leading to the recording mechanism.
PAINTING INVENTION
For the use of painters of high structures an inventor has patented a boatswain's chair beneath which is a tank for paint that can be applied with an air brush by connecting the tank to a source of compressed air.
LIGHTS CIGARS
FROM STREET LAMPS
WICHITA Kan., Mar. 8. — Glenn Hyder is only nine feet in his socks and weighs 325 pounds, but he may be a big man some day. He's only 19 now, but if he doesn't stop lighting cigars from street lamps he may stunt his growth.
Valparaiso is now regularly a port of call for the Toyo Kisen Kaisha line vessels, the Grace steamship company’s vessels, and a number of lines out of Atlantic ports to the west coast of South America through the Panama canal. The German Kosmos line may soon start a regular line of vessels, according to reports.

GERMANY RE-ENTERS AVIATION INDUSTRY
BERLIN, Mar. 3. — Beginning May 3 Germany will be able to undersell the world's airplane makers and to engage in rivalry in European commercial flying.
The allied aviation control commission has decided that Germany was completely disarmed aerially on Sunday, which, according to the Versailles treaty, permits the resumption of air activity in three months after the date of disarmament—or on May 5.
According to the Germans, they were disarmed a year and a half ago, but the entente found technicalities for not calling Germany completely disarmed until today Germany has not 12 airplanes.
In addition to building a zeppelin for America, the Junkers' and other concerns are planning big productions. They will establish a network of lines throughout Europe to Constantinople and Moscow.
CORN FOR CASH IN MINNESOTA TOWNS
MADELIA, Minn., Mar. 3. — Merchants of Madelia and farmers of the surrounding country have been but together as the result of the acceptance of corn as cash in the purchase of merchandise or settlement of accounts.
In a two-month period just ended, the merchants bought more than 35,000 bushels of corn at approximately 30 cents a bushel, or a total of $10,500, which was "new money" released in the community and relieved the financial pressure on merchants to a certain extent.

BERLIN, Mar. 3. — The Berlin city council cunningly discovered how to extract gold out of a sausage.
That the Germans are fond of hot sausage has always been known. Since the revolution the number of street traffickers selling hot sausage is uncountable and may be found on almost every corner during the evenings and even whole nights.
An enterprising man has just signed a contract with the city director for the privilege of erecting 10 sausage kiosks at the largest thorofares of Berlin. The fee for the license will have to be paid in gold—200 grains fine gold per kiosk.
