EASTERNERS ARE GUEST AT PRETTY AFTERNOON PARTY In her prettily decorated home on South Clementine street, Mrs. T. L. Hoag entertained a company of friends yesterday afternoon. A combination of freesias and acacia, the latter being presented to Mrs. Hoag by Mrs. Hamler, was spring like in effect. Fancy work was the occupation of the ladies, while the men of the company visited and discussed the countless fine qualities of California, and especially in comparison of the weather between the state of Illinois, the home of some of the guests, and the sunny Southland. Later the guests were invited to the dining room to partake of a three-course luncheon. The table was beautifully appointed, a large cut glass basket of freesias centering it, and the pretty silver and other cut glass service gave a rich appearance to the luncheon. Guests at the pleasant affair were Mr. and Mrs. George Hamler, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Frandsen and daughter, Miss Norma Frandsen, who are wintering in Anaheim, their home being in Illinois; Mrs. Bilyew, Miss Zola Vanatta, Olinda; Mrs. John Zeigler and Mrs. Carl Vanatta. Seven-year-old "Bobby" Hoag played several piano selections, which were delightfully received, as the little chap is an embryo artist. HOTEL VALENCIA GUESTS Guests at Hotel Valencia yesterday included: M. Katz, Los Angeles; William E. Andrade, Los Angeles; Leo F. Nash, San Diego; Mrs. J. P. Martin, Los Angeles; W. L. Jett, Los Angeles; E. Wager, Los Angeles; Henry Tonjes, San Francisco; Mrs. C. E. Calin, Los Angeles; A. L. Carthay, Los Angeles. CONTINUE SERVICES IN GRAND BROTHERHOOD MAKES PLANS The meeting last night of the Brotherhood of the First Presbyterian church was not so well attended as had been hoped, owing to illness of several of the members, but the meeting was interesting with a round table talk of the plans of the organization for the future. The 6:30 dinner was enjoyed, as usual, the Ladies Aid furnishing this portion of the evening's entertainment. Election of officers, which was scheduled for last evening, was postponed, probably to the regular meeting on the first Thursday in April, although a special meeting was called. Community singing was a pleasant feature of the evening. Each member present expressed himself as to the needs and good plans for the work of the Brotherhood, this being only the second meeting since its organization. MANY ATTEND SILVER TEA About thirty-five members of the Ladies Aid society of the White Temple church attended the Silver Tea yesterday afternoon in the church parlors. The regular business meeting was held, the important item of discussion being the coming banquet. The Men's Bible class will have big dinner on March 13. Monday evening and the Aid society will furnish the meal. After the business meeting a social hour followed and refreshments were served by the hostesses, who were the Mesdames D. M. Forsythe, Paul Hester, J. T. Hutchinson, Hartley and the Misses Forsythe. BUILDER TELLS OF MASTERPIECE Paris, Feb. 28. There was no more important contribution to the success of the allied armies than the aid rendered by the wireless telegraphy post of the Eiffel tower. Particularly was this so during the German advance on Paris in the early days of the war. G. Eiffel, the builder of the tower, whose engineering masterpiece so well served his country during the crucial days, has told how he came to erect the famous tower and why it is that he believes there will never be another one built like it. Eiffel is 89, yet full of vigor. He is short of stature, grey haired, and wears a little grey beard. During the war, Eiffel established a factory for the testing of aeroplane motors. He also wrote several volumes on the subject of aerodynamics; In recognition of his many services to his country the French government has made him an officer of the Legion of Honor, the rosette of which he wears in his button hole. The famous engineer lives in a beautiful mansion on the rue Rabelais. "SPARKLES" TO TELL NEW JEWEL STYLES "Sparkles" is here!
