Monday, February 27, 1922 Anaheim Champs Defeat Vernon Woodmen 9 to 1 Anaheim Elks took the Vernon Camp of Modern Woodmen for a trimming yesterday afternoon here by the score of 9-1. It was a good workout for the local champs who are expecting considerably more opposition next Sunday when the Alexander Giants, fastest semi-pro team in Los Angeles, will come down. Manager Billy Knott has not decided whether to arrange a three-games series. Yesterday, he received overtures from Pasadena Elks for a three-game set-to. Pasadena, runner-up to Anaheim for two seasons in Elks state baseball championship race, will be accommodated as soon as the smoked Irishmen are taken care of. Callahan was back in the center-field again yesterday after missing the game of the previous Sunday. He has been having the flu or something so he only got three hits, one a three-bagger, and a sacrifice fly yesterday. Arch Hawkins also returned to the fold for the first time this winter. When Hughes went in the box in the seventh inning, he struck out the first five men who faced him. The visitors made their lone tally in the fourth when O'Shea trippled and ambled home on a wild throw to first. Vernon M. W. A— AB. R. H. SH. PO. 2A E. The race was called off yesterday at the close of the 93rd lap by General Manager A.M. Young of the Los Angeles Speedway Association, when the rain made the track too dangerous for driving. Tommy Milton led the field by a lap when the race was stopped. His average time was 109.8 miles per hour and total elapsed time $62.53.01 Pietro Bordino, the Italian, was the feature driver, but tire trouble kept him out of first place. The meet was well-fought, but the result largely was a foregone conclusion, because the southern team only brought up about two competitors for each of the 13 events. Santa Ana took eight firsts and San Diego five. McFadden of Santa Ana sprung the surprise of the meet by bating Finley of Santa Ana by a foot in the 100-yard dash. Time was 10:2. Messing of San Diego and McFadden made the highest individual scores, 14¼ points each. Heilman of San Diego won the mile run in 5:05. Santa Ana took the relay race.
