FOREST RANGER USES MOTOR BOAT WASHINGTON, Feb. 23.—A forest ranger who rides a motor boat instead of a horse would be a novelty in the Western States, but is the rule in the Tongass National Forest, Alaska. In a report to the United States Department of Agriculture, of conditions there, A. E. Sherman, associate forester, writes as follows: "The Tongass National Forest is completely equipped with an admirable system of waterways. Here, instead of a saddle and pack horse, the ranger rides a seagoing motor boat. He guides his steed by means of a wheel instead of reins; feeds it gasoline instead of oats; tethers it at night with an anchor in some sheltered cove instead of with a picket rope in a mountain meadow, and used the paint brush in lieu of a curry comb." DOLLARS LONDON, Feb. 24.—The British Isles are preparing for an invasion. From Southampton to Inverness and from Tipperary to Hull, coffers are being cleared of their shillings. But only that they may be filled with dollars which the Britisher says the American tourist throws away by the bucket. Steamship authorities allowed that they were expecting an invading army of unprecedented size to come swarming across the Atlantic. The advance guard was to arrive early in the spring. The army, they declared, would not be composed of the business man and his wife which England had grown so accustomed to, but would be drafted of the old pre-war, hundred proof tourist, richer and more extravagant than ever. Britain cheered and set about getting ready for an enthusiastic reception. From the Irish Free State came reports that the Blarney Stone would be blarner than ever and it was rumored from Edinburgh that a few extra "old castles" could be erected if necessary.
