BIG RACING STARS BEGIN WORK-OUTS LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15—With the exception of Ralph De Palma, driver of the French Ballot; and Pietro Bordino, the Italian speed hero who arrives today with his Grand Prix Fiat, all the speed kings entered for the 250 mile championship classic scheduled for the Los Angeles speedway Feb. 22, were on the boards yesterday in the first official workouts. Thursday is the day set for Bordino's first trial spins on the fast Los Angeles course and the Fiat driver will undoubtedly be the center of interest. This is the first time that one of the famous Italian cars has been brought to this country for a motor classic since the days when Teddy Tetzlaff was the terror of the race course with the big Fiat 120. It is also the first time that a car has been imported direct from Europe for a California race since the first Sunbeam 12 was brought over from England by George Adams for Hughie Hughes to drive. This is the first time that an Italian has ever come to California to dive a car that has been tuned and primed on the other side of the Atlantic. It is therefore little wonder that the great Bordino holds the center of the stage at this time. One of the features of the opening practice was the driving debut of Peter De Paolo, formerly mechanician to Ralph De Palma. De Paolo is a nephew of the famous Italian pilot and is to appear in his first race as a driver on Washington's birthday, mounted on the Frontenac. De Paolo's driving was critically watched by the spectators at the RAYMOND HIGH MAN IN WEEK'S BOWLING Bugs Raymond smashed his way to high man for the week in the City League, hitting 592 for total. Dick Losefell toppled the inpies for high in the B class with 541 for totals. The city league is having a close race this year; any one of the eight teams figure to finish first place. De Paolo is a nephew of the famous Italian pilot and is to appear in his first race as a driver on Washington's birthday, mounted on the Frontenac. De Paolo's driving was critically watched by the spectators at the first practice and the verdict was that he showed the training under that greatest of all strategists of the speedway. De Palma. Art Klein, Jimmy Murphy, Joe Thomas, Eddie Hearne, Roscoe Sarles, Eddie Miller, Frank Elliott and Harry Hartz, are all now in condition for the meet and confident of the ability to defeat the Italian on the Flat. GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM WINS TITLE The Anaheim H. S. girls basketball team has added more laurels as a result of a speedy victory 22 to 19 at Orange last evening. Orange disputed the rights of Anaheim to carry away the championship and to settle the quarrel once and for all the local team went to Orange and gave those cabsa tosera a batting they will not soon forget. As a reward for the honors the local girls have won the Santa Ana Monogram club will present the team with a silver loving cup. Miss Irene Jacques has coached her girls in a very pleasing manner and the team has made her proud. Participating in the game yesterday were the Misses: Katherine Hurte, Helen Daly, Esther Hile, May Reqarth, Elia Cook, and Frances Adams. A number of social events have been planned for the girls. FULLERTON TO MEET ALHAMBRA ON TRACK Coach H. G. Tracy's track team was this afternoon holding a dual meet with Alhambra high school on the Fullerton track. Altho strenuous work has been done in an effort to develop a track team which would cop some of the So. Calif. honors, the Fullerton school officials are not making any untoward boasts. It is admitted merely, that the team will be a little better than last year. Last year Alhambra had nothing startling in track material, but it is reported that a number of stalwarts capable of wrestling honors from the locals are included in the roster today. Coach Tracy, who has been working faithfully with the teams, is a former Pomona college track athlete. HOLLYWOOD TIGERS WILL COME SUNDAY Manager Billy Knott believes he has lined up the fastest team that has faced the champion Anaheim Elks this season for next Sunday's pastime at the local high school field. The opposition will be furnished by the Hollywood Tigers, who include five professional baseball players. "The AA league has completed its winter season in Los Angeles, releasing for contests here the best baseball talent wintering in So. Cal., says Manager Knott." "From now on, I expect to be able to bring teams here that will make the Elks hump from start to finish." GOODYEARS LOSE TO FULLERTON JUNIORS Fullerton junior college basketball team outplayed the Goodyear Rubber Co. team of Los Angeles in a basketball game last night by a margin of 10 points. The J. C. team is scheduled to play the Larry Semon team of Los Angeles Friday night. The baseball season has opened, and the Fullerton high school is scheduled to play Huntington Beach tomorrow. SANTA ANA DEFEATS LOCAL CASABA MEN Anahiem high school casabas tossers came home from the county seat last night with the small end of a 38 to 7 score. The Santa Ana hoop artists were too fast for the local five. 874 ARRESTS FOR STOCK SWINDLING WASHINGTON, Feb. 15. — Stock swindling cases involving more than $140,000,000 await the action of the department of justice. ENGLISHMAN LIVED CENTURY AND HALF LONDON, Feb. 15. — An extraordinary instance of longevity is that concerning an agriculturist named Thomas Parr, born in Shropshire, England, in 1465. He was engaged in agricultural pursuits and worked in the field after his 130th birthday. At 120 he married a second time, and had the responsibilities of another family; his wife presenting him with offspring. At 152 he was introduced to the court of Charles I by the Earl of Arundel as a remarkable prodigy, but the change of air and new mode of living caused his death. A post-mortem examination of his body was made, but no internal symptoms of decay could be discovered. A grandson of Thomas Parr died in Shropshire at the age of 120.
