ANCIENT GREEK TOYS LIKE THOSE OF TODAY
LONDON, Feb. 14. — Now that Christmas is safely out of the way, and the first of the procession of monthly reckonings has come, perhaps the gentle reader would like some suggestions for his next Christmas shopping.
Anyhow, the British museum has some samples of what the long-suffering pa of 2,000 years ago devised to amuse the kiddies. You turn to the left when you get past old Cheops and his mummy harem and there you have the cradles of the cradle of the race. There you may see what made Alexander great, what inspired Xerxes to join the army, what instilled in Helen of Troy her womanly virtues.
As the modern children of firemen play with small fire engines, and those of war profiteers play with toy battleships, so, one might suppose, the children of ancient Greece played with bootblack stands. But not at all. The only trace, in fact, of what the uninitiated might expect from the fount of Greek culture is a pair of dolls' shoes that could be put on or taken off. There are, instead, nicely dressed little Greek lady dolls, looking like Antigone fetching the vase of nectar.
Tiny dolls in little carts drawn by horses, bronze chairs or dolls' houses, animals, tops and marbles, in fact, quite a number of the toys that are snatched out of the Christmas stocking or swiped from the neighbor kids today, are to be seen in the case there, labeled two thousand years ago.

TALKS OF MUCH ELSE THAN BUSINESS
TOKYO, Feb. 14. Upon a silk cushion on the matting floor the Bo-son sat cross-legged, his toes folded under him. He clapped his hands and the amah brot more tea. The paper walls of the Bo-san's house were faint protection against the cold of the snowstorm outside. He hustled another habachi, and we huddled over the charcoal broilers' puny glow and talked, thrud an interpreter of, everything on earth except the business at hand—which was that I wanted to rent the Bo-san's house.
Bo-san means honorable Bhuddist priest, and this one was especially honorable with scores of strange temples and extensive Bhuddist properties under his jurisdiction. He was a keen little middle-aged man, steeped in mystical lore. Scholls of sacred writings he had been studying were strewn about him. He low booming of pagan bells sounded across the temple grounds and the ghosts of old Japan seemed to cluster about the ancient place.

Keen competition was shown this morning in the debate at the Junior high school when the comparative merits of Lincoln and Washington were presented. The judges, Ray Callor, Fred Witman and Wilton Abplanalp gave the decision to the supporters of Lincoln. The speakers on the winning side were Eugene Booth, John Bovee and Edmund Beebe.
Prior to the debate, patriotic songs were sung by the audience, led by Miss Owen, Modesta Van Boooven read "The Perfect Tribute." A number of the parents were present to enjoy the program.

BELLS ON THEIR FEET
NEW YORK, Feb. 1—It must make life difficult if one feels an urge to be completely in fashion all the time according to the latest whimsical edicts. Every once in a while there comes something which is just a little too much for a fairly sobrietous person to follow wholeheartedly. For instance, the dressing of one's feet. Bells on one's goloshes may be jocular, but I insist they are not the most appropriate things for city streets. They are one of the moment's fads, however, and the well-goloshed girl goes jingling up the avenue in audible imitation of an old-fashioned sleigh. Then, even worse, fringes of monkey fur on the ankles of one's hosiery. Sticking straight from each ankle, like a cat's whiskers, this long, scant fur finds its latest use. It's too much!

THIS GIRL LOVES WILD ANIMALS
This girl prefers wild animals for her playmates and takes after her famous father. Her name is Gladys Ditmars, 17 years old, and she can be found almost any day at one New York Bronx Zoo, where her father, Dr. Raymond Ditmars, has charge of all the animals. Gladys permits the snakes to climb about her as though she was a real snake charmer.
FRENCH GIRL REAL FOOTBALL ADMIRER
French girl is becoming a real sport "fan." Until a few years ago the last place a Parisian would expect to meet his feminine friends was a stadium. Women then saw their brothers or their sweethearts come home from a football match or a rowing race without displaying any more interest than if they had simply returned from playing cards in a cafe.
All this is changed, now that French women have taken so enthusiastically to sports of all kinds. The aspect of a stadium anywhere around Paris is transformed by the presence of an ever increasing gathering of feminine spectators.
Women, indeed, are among the keenest of "fans" and, to see a football match, think nothing of standing an hour or two in their filmsy Louis XV shoes and silk stockings in ice mud or slush, or of braving a downpour of rain to witness the victory of their favorite team or champion.
And in the train or street car or motor car carrying them homeward women may be heard discussing the relative merits of the teams or clubs with all the warmth and competency or regular followers of athletic meets.

AIRPLANE IS USED AS AMBULANCE
HUONOT, Kas., Feb. 14—When snow-blocked roads made travel impossible in this section recently, Dr. Sutton established a new record by traveling some distance in an airplane to the farm of Roy Patterson to attend a 5-year-old injured boy and then taking the patient by plane to a hospital at Liberal, sixty miles away. The entire trip required less than an hour, and was the first time an airplane was used as an ambulance in this section of the state.

Mars Leers at Venus; Will Cause Big Riot
PARIS, Jan. 31. The year 1922 is going to be one grand riot of wild debauchery, according to Mine, de Teleme.
She has taken the place of the late Mime, de Thebes as the recognized spokeswoman of French astrologers. Madame de Teleme is not referring to Montemarte, or the Latin Quarter, or the all-night foes of any part of Paris. Her dictum goes for the whole world.
It all comes from the facte, patent to all those to whom star-gazing is an exact science, that old man Mars is leering at Venus in the most approved heavy villain style. He did that several times in the course of history, Roman and other, but this time there’s no mistaking his intent.
“Venus will be under a pernicious sign, which will be governed by Mars,” is how Mime, de Teleme puts it in her almanac. Asked to explain a little more fully, Mime, de Teleme, remarking the slightly incredulous air of her interviewer, replied:
“Mon cher monsieur, this is no joke. Astrology is not something to be laughed at.” What I predict is...
