Tuesday, February 7, 1922 SPORTING EVENTS APPLEBY BROTHERS, CUE WIZARDS, WHO ARE SEEKING NATIONAL AMATEUR TITLE Edgar T. Abbleby (at left) and his brother, Francis S. Appleby, of New York, as representatives of the East, carried off the major share of the honors of the national class A. 18.2 balk line championship in Brooklyn. Edgar won his first two matches easily. In the second set he made a new amateur mark when he made a run of 142. Francis, his younger brother, also played brilliantly. AUTO CLUB GIVES ROAD CONDITIONS The Auto club of So. Calif. today gave out this bulletin of road conditions: Coast Route north: Was not in the least affected by the recent storms, and travel has been going thru without interruption. Inland route north: Ridge Route will probably be clear of snow about February 10th or 11th. Snow plows are now at work clearing the road, and until their work is done it will be a hazardous trip for anyone to undertake. The road is passable to Bakerfield by way of Mojave but G. & L. Calif. today gave out this bulletin of road conditions: Coast Route north: Was not in the least affected by the recent storms, and travel has been going thru without interruption. Inland route north: Ridge Route will probably be clear of snow about February 10th or 11th. Snow plows are now at work clearing the road, and until their work is done it will be a hazardous trip for anyone to undertake. The road is passable to Bakersfield by way of Mojave but very poor, especially on the detonations around construction work between Lancaster and Mojave. Conditions are O.K. from Bakersfield north to San Francisco. San Diego Coast Route: Now in excellent condition. With the opening of the Montebello bridge the tour thru the oilfields is eliminated. San Diego to El Centro: Passable by way of Potrero Grade and Campo. Long Beach boulevard: Now open to travel as the bridge across the Los Angeles river has been repaired. Valley Boulevard: El Monte bridge is still closed. It is necessary to tour by way of the Garvey-rd and go from Los Angeles via Montebello and the oilfields to the Valley -blvd., striking that road just east of El Monte. Foothill Boulevard: Open and in excellent shape to San Bernardino. Cajon Pass: On Feb. 6th the road was still blocked with snow. Two Auto club cars managed to get through this road. Will be open and advisable just as soon as turn-outs have been provided in the snow which now makes travel difficult. LAUNCH MOVE TO REDUCE U. S. ARMY WASHINGTON, Feb. 7—A demand that the army be reduced to 100,000 will be the first congressional move resulting from the arms conference, which ended yesterday. This would cut taxes and give the American people an immediate benefit from the conference, supporters of the plan pointed out. They believe that with causes of international misunderstandings removed an army of 100,000 instead of 150,000 would be sufficient.
