BUICK BOOTH AT NEW YORK LAUDED
In a statement received by Wm. Goodrum, manager of the Anaheim Auto Co., local Buick dealers, from E. T. Stropg, general sales manager of the Buick Motor Company who attended the New York automobile show, he says:
"No greater evidence of the fact that the name Buick has come to mean to the motoring public a car of correctness in design, accuracy and efficiency in manufacture and a lasting motoring service than the tribute that has been paid to the Buick at the N.Y. show this year by Buick owners and admirers from all points of the globe could be desired.
"It was the biggest and best show ever held and Buick dealers were present in large numbers. The Buick cars were the center of attraction and dealers seemed to be impressed with the fact that it would be advisable for them to assure themselves of all the cars they will need for spring delivery.
"The demand for the new special 6-54 roadster was so great that it is doubtful whether we will be able to overtake it.
"In this respect the show exceeded all our expectations. This new roadster was acclaimed the handsomest car at the show and a throng of admirers constantly surrounded it.
"This new special roadster was designed to give to those who desired it a car of handsome, snappy appearance, with all the superior mechanical qualities that Buick cars have been noted for during the past 20 years and the tidal wave of approval with which it was met proves that we have hit the mark.
"The public is the court of last resort in deciding the merits of a motor car, for they have acquired a sense of value in automobiles equal to that which they possess of other products and it is more than gratifying to note the esteem in which Buick cars were held by all who attended the show."
Buick was not at the show in an effort to prove the merit of its product
ELTISTE & SONS ORDER TRACTORS
M. Elstite & Sons of Orange received a wire today announcing a cut of $230 on the 8-16 International tractor and $200 on the 10-20 Titan. On the strength of this cut Elstiste has ordered two cartoads of each vehicle. In so doing, he believes that he is helping to give employment to probable consumers of Orange-cooranges.
The company has places of business both at Orange and Fullerton.
BIRCH PRODUCTION 1000 BARRELS DAILY
Just why should A. Otis Birch worry about a few thousand taxes?
That may seem a mystery to some folks.
Of course the $17,000 that his oil company is seeking to recover from the county is worth picking up, all will agree. It merely seems trifling when one learns what the Birch company has been deriving from just one source of income.
From just one source—a thousand barrels of oil every day.
Each barrel worth, say, $2.40 or somewhere in that neighborhood.
One thousand barrels a day, $2,400 a day or $876,000 a year.
From just one source. And there are others.
That was the production of the twenty-acre holdings of the Birch company in the Brea oil fields up to last September. Since that time the production has dropped slightly.
The 1,000 barrels figure was given by J. H. Royer, superintendent of the company, in testifying at the trial of his company's suit to recover approximately $17,000 taxes paid under protest to the county for the year 1916-17.
The county taxed the company $19,500. The company thought it should have been taxed $2,500—a day's production of oil.
That isn't mentioning the by-products and the gas. In that direction there is additional revenue.
The oil and gas are not secured...
GRAHAM TELLS HOW TO FISH FOR LOBSTER
LONDON, Feb. 4.—If you are ever in doubt as to where the next meal is coming from, take a boat ride over to Madeira and there according to Dr. Michael Graham, by letting down some traps, with good smelly decayed meat, on a thousand foot length of cable, you may get some robust lobsters.
Dr. Graham has been there and found some fine ones, and he described the process to the Royal College of Physicians here. He found that near stony ledges on the floor of the deep sea were to be found very healthy edible fish, the only trouble with them being that when brought to the surface from the great pressure, the gas in their bodies expanded so that they died.
He found a fish called the "Sherny," which, he says, is valuable for food. It may be captured at a depth of 2,500 feet. It goes into a helpless spasm when it reaches the surface. One of its peculiarities is that its heart will beat for two days after its death.
So, if when you get to Madeira, you find all your fish die on you or explode, or aren't worth eating, you'll at least have a good fish story.

SIAMESE TWINS CUT APART; ONE DIES
PARIS, Feb. 4.—A case similar to that of the famous Siamese twins has just been brought to the attention of the French Academy of Medicine by Dr. Filliatre. It is the story of Madeleine and Suzanne, sisters, linked together by birth.
Dr. Filliatre performed the delicate operation of separating the French twins when a severe illness attacked one of them and threatened the life of both. Madeleine died following the operation, but Suzanne's life was saved and she is today a healthy girl of eight, normal in every respect.
The French sisters were born linked by a living tissue which bound their bodies together face to face. Shortly after birth Madeleine was taken ill and soon Suzanne began to show the same signs of illness. By medical treatment the health of the twins was for a while restored, but Madeleine soon again became ill. Fever, convulsions and poor respiration rendered her condition critical and also threatened the life of her twin sister. It was then that Dr. Filliatre performed the operation which had only once before been attempted.
Madeleine died three days after the operation, but Suzanne gradually gained strength and developed. A scar where the surgeon's knife cut its way is the only sign left to her of the operation.
BOAT CANNOT UPSET
That it is not only unsinkable but also cannot be upset is the claim of its inventor for a life boat with an air chamber extending under the whole bottom and an unusually heavy keel.
LIFTED BY FLY WHEEL
Of Norwegian invention is a water wheel having paddles that are carried down steam by the current, then lifted by a fly wheel and replaced in the water.
The North Pole is reported sixty feet out of position and it's difficult to get a man up there to fix it.—Denver Times.
"WHAT DO YOU THINK"
of a rental income producing nearly 50% annually on the investment. Nine rentals on a double lot bring in $390.00 per month, with practically no expense. $10,000.00 will purchase this outright and owner will give terms or might accept good house, fairly priced, as part payment.
ALSO—Rooming house netting $500 per month. One of the best producers in Anaheim.
