AUTOMOBILE SECTION VOL. XXV—NO. 155 CHEVROLET CARS ARE GOING FAST The Frank P. Taggart Co., agent for the Chevrolet cars, has sold and delivered 20 cars during January from its Fullerton and Anaheim offices, John D. Van Buren, manager of the local office, reports. Anaheim, Placentia, Fullerton, Yorba Linda, Buena Park and LaHabra, in fact all territory north of the Santa Ana river is covered by Taggart, and most of the communities mentioned are buying the car. One carload of cars, six machines, was received on Friday and another on Tuesday, and all had been sold by Wednesday of this week. In the last three months more than 60 cars have been sold and delivered. At the close of 1921 more than 600,000 Chevrolet cars were in the hands of the public. "It isn't any wonder," said Van Buren, "considering the fact that the Chevrolet car is actually the cheapest completely equipped car on the market today." The latest shipments of cars were largely spoken for, and Wednesday was the first day, according to Van Buren, when an order could be filled the same day it was received. Bill Hauser, who has been with the office here for the last six years, is largely responsible for the excellent showing made. The 1922 is another improvement over predecessors. Its equipment includes a Willard rubber threaded batter and a spiral bevel gear in the differential, which has made the car as quiet fin operation as any car. AMERICAN HUMOR OF CLEAN VARIETY YOUNGSTOWN, O., Feb. 4 — American humor differs from the fun of other countries in a variety of ways without losing anything in the comparison. There have been many men of letters in this country who have achieved fame and fortune as "funny men," and it is pleasant to remember that practically all of them have won their laurels through a humor that aims to entertain and instruct, without leaving anything in the form of a scar. In some countries sex is at the bottom of nearly every idea of fun; in others satire is the standard of wit, and in others the "board" jest is best understood. Inhumor's nail of fame as Americana know it are such names as Mark Twain, Bill Nye, James Whitcomb Riley, Artemus Ward, Eli Perkins, Robert Burdette and a long list of others, few of whom ever found it necessary to throw any verbal brickbats or resort to vulgarity, to gain the followings which they enjoyed. Recent years have developed successors to the delightful jokers of other days, but the standard, and in a measure the form of expression, is loyalty retained. American humor frequently gains its point through inference rather than rounded expression. Chandler-Cleveland Repairs Provided "Let George do it" is no motto of Adams & Dohm, auto repair experts. Its equipment includes a Willard rubber threaded batter and a spiral bevel gear in the differential, which has made the car as quiet in operation as any car built, except the most expensive. The car is in baked enamel thrustout, the back of the seats has been raised four and one-half inches, bringing additional comfort, and a new type of one-man top, with gypsey curtains has been added. MORE DANGERS IN MOONSHINE BREW HOUSTON, Texas, Feb. 4.—Lye, fusel oil, and wood alcohol are not the only poisonous substances in bootleg whisky, according to Deputy Sheriff Hampe. Mr. Hampe, Harris-co deputy, who claims the state still-capturing championship, is considered the local bootleg authority. "Not only do fusel oil and lye exist in poison moonshine whisky, but frequently cockroaches, mice and wood insects go into the deadly concoction," Sheriff Hampe said. "Barrels used for fermenting mash are left uncovered," according to Mr. Hampe. "This allows the rodents and insects to fall in and die. Moonshiners make no efforts to take the dead animals and bugs out. A dead pig was found in a barrel of mash destroyed on one of his raids, Mr. Hampe asserted. Witman, eyesight specialist. Chandler-Cleveland Repairs Provided "Let George do it" is no motto of Adams & Dohm, auto repair experts, at 119 North Lemon-st. They do all their own work in their own shop, and depend upon neither factory nor other mechanics for it. Besides the Cole the firm specializes in service for Maxwell, Chandler and Cleveland cars. The concern claims to be the only one in Anaheim or the immediate vicinity which provides a complete Chandler-Cleveland service. Adams had experience for several years in Chandler repair work on the coast, and knows the machine from bottom to top and every other way. With all of their own hand tools as well as larger tools and machinery required, an efficient, dependable service is possible. All work is guaranteed. MEXICAN GAMBLERS SENTENCED Ten days each were given by Judge J. B. Cox in Superior Court to Juan Chavez, proprietor of a place on N. Lemon-st near the Anaheim sugar factory for gambling. Jesus Espinosa, Frankalliro Carrillo, Lorenzo Villabon, Anastasio Perez, and Antonio Hernadez, Eldoro Morales and Casistro Deanda, who were arrested in the same party by Sheriff C. E. Jackson on Wednesday night, were dismissed. Buick Economy of Upkeep "Stretches motoring dollars" It goes a long way with me! VALVE-IN-HEAD Rubber Dollars--- What do you mean, rubber dollars? We mean just this—that the new Buick certainly stretches the dollar over lots of highway, and over lots of motoring pleasure. More automobile, more gasoline and oil mileage, more riding comfort, more resale value, are pretty good examples of dollar stretching—aren't they? Buy a new Buick and see how much fun it is to spend this rubber money. It certainly stretches a long way with the Buick. ANAHEIM AUTO CO Wm. Mrs. Horace Dodge was seen wearing a pearl necklace of great value, while in New York recently and it is now said that the strand was that which forms the basis of a $387,778 law suit against Cartier, Inc., by Paris Art Dealers, who alleged that the sum is due them in commissions. The necklace, tradition has it, brings ill luck to the owner and Mr. Dodge is said to have died immediately after his acquisition of the jewels for Mrs. Dodge. 1900 LICENSES TO DATE ISSUED HERE Nineteen hundred licenses issued by the local office of the Automobile Club of Southern California to date, compared with 800 up to Feb. 20 last year! At this rate, the number may triple instead merely of doubling that of last year. The rate is slowing up, however, because non-members were refused licenses after Feb. 1. The central office of the club in Los Angeles last year gave no warning of the date when no more licenses would be issued. The only way the office here found out was but the return of applications. The issuing of licenses to non-members during most of the period, however, has resulted in many new members for the club in the Anaheim district, it is declared. The former outsiders appreciated the courtesy of not being compelled to go to the metropolis and stand in line for hours awaiting their turn. The coming of non-members to this and other offices afforded an opportunity also of demonstrating the many advantages and privileges which membership provides for. Double the registration was predicted many weeks ago by the local office, which is gratified that its hopes have been so abundantly realized. J. H. Metzgar of Santa Ana has joined the office staff here, succeeding Frank A. Krause, who has been transferred to Long Beach. Metzgar is a bright, accommodating fellow and well known to hundreds of Anaheimers and Orangeites as well as Santa Anans. REFUSES TO SELL $5 BILL FOR $1000 MARYSVILLE, Cal., Feb. 4. — A. Bailey, a rancher near here, refused to sell a $5 bill for $1000. The note bears the date Dec. 21, 1839, and is an heirloom of the Bailey family. It is printed on one side only. It was signed on the back by the president and cashier of the City Trust and Banking company of New York City. It is of the bank note variety, and was issued during the time when the "national bank" fight was on in congress. Notes of this variety are very rare, declare collectors. No one can have health who eats when tired, hurried, worried, anxious or excited. BUYS AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR PLAY LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4. — Simeon Gest, a younger brother of Morris Gest, announced in Berlin the other day that he had secured the rights for the American presentation of the popular comedy drama, "Die Balle-rina des Koenig's." "The King's Dancer," as the play will be called in the American presentation, is written by Rudolf Presber and Leo Walther Stein and deals with incidents in the life of Frederic the Great, the four acts laid in Berlin and Sans Souci. The story of "The King's Dancer" has to do with the love of Frederic for Barbara Campanini, familiarly known as the Barbarina. A very slight story it is, its action scarcely more than etched as a background for the whims, and tantrums, and moods, and charms of the Italian girl—part child, part courtesan, part tiger kitten. DODGE QUALITY IS UP; PRICES LOWER With better materials, equipment and workmanship than ever before being put into Dodge cars, the cut in prices made by the factory mean an even more substantial reduction than indicated, Charles H. Mann, Anheim Dodge agent, pointed out. These reduction from factory prices are announced as follows: Touring, $105; roadster, $85; sedan, $345; coupe, $305; screen commercial car, $155. Delivery prices here retail will be approximately $1076 for the touring car, $1027 for the roadster, $1667 sedan, $1488 coupe and $1,042 for the commercial car. The demand for Dodge cars has reached such a point that Mann urges prospective buyers to put in their orders as early as possible in order to be accommodated. Lemon St. Anaheim In rear of Cole and G. M. C. Truck Agency REPUBLIC WILL MEET TRADE RELATIONS RIGA, Feb. 4.—Latavia, one of the world's youngest republics, intends be coming a "bridge" for what is hoped will be a tremendous traffic in merchandise between the outer world and needy Russia, according to V. Salnais, assistant minister of foreign affairs of Latavia. In an interview with the United Press Salnais outlined Latavia's optimistic plans for the future. "It is our policy to make a 'bridge' of Latavia for trade relations between Russia and the western world," he said. "So far the main part of Russia's imports have gone through Estonia, by way of seaport of Revel. But this is due to the fact that Estonia concluded peace with Russia much earlier than Latavia. Now the amount of goods going via Latavia is constantly increasing. Statistics now show that 46 per cent of the total Russian exports passed through my country." AGENCIES STILL SEEK PROTECTION The movement among the Dealers' Craft of the County Auto Trades Assn. to have legal enforcement of cooperation between agencies that have sold cars and garages that repair them is not new or confined to the county association, according to certain dealers here. At the last session of the state legislature an attempt was made to have a law passed. POPULARITY OF DURANTS GROWS The Anaheim and Santa Ana territory served by the agency of James E. Appleby has been "shown," so far as the Durant car is concerned. People are buying Durant cars all the way from Piacentia to Santa Ana. Ten more cars, all of the popular model A-22, arrived this week and were divided up between the two offices. Practically all of the principal communities in the territory covered are represented among the sales. A representative of the local agency pointed out some of the superior features of equipment of the Durant, that account for its popularity. These include Timken wheel bearings throughout, genuine leather upholstery and unusually durable construction of fenders and body, including extreme rigidity of frame, due to a patent tubular backbone extending between the center cross member and the rear cross member. These members are built of heavy, pressed steel, the front one eight inches deep and the rear five inches. Combined with this feature is a 34-inch spring in front and 42-inch spring in back, which give the car the riding qualities that one would find ordinarily only in a machine weighing between 500 and 1,500 pounds more. The A22 touring car weighs 2225 pounds. The company has gone in considerably for standardization, both of parts and models, and this largely accounts for the reasonable prices asked. The touring car, sedan and coupe are the only models offered at AGENCIES STILL SEEK PROTECTION The movement among the Dealers' Craft of the County Auto Trades Assn. to have legal enforcement of co-operation between agencies that have sold cars and garages that repair them is not new or confined to the county association, according to certain dealers here. At the last session of the state legislature an attempt was made to have a law passed requiring repairmen to communicate at once with the owner, whose name and address are or are supposed to be indicated on the registration card. Not much was said about this desire of county dealers at the last regular monthly dinner of the dealers, because of the wish on the part of all present for harmony and the adjustment of differences. But there was a somewhat sharp discussion, and the movement to have the cooperation mentioned assured is not dead. Various other states, it is understood, have laws requiring such cooperation in the cases of repairs or overhauling costing more than $50 or $75 at one time. In this way, the equity of the dealer, if he is the real owner, is not wiped out in case the repairs are costly and the possessor of the car declines or is unable to foot the bill. Dealers in Anaheim point out that there isn't the least cause for any friction, because the co-operation of the dealers helps to protect service concerns as well as dealers.
