SHIPPING COMPANY OPENS S. A. OFFICES Declaring that cargoes have been assigned for boats operating out of Newport harbor to the Mexican coast that will make the enterprise profitable from start, Louis P. Baumen, secretary of the American-Mexican Fruit and Transportation company, today announced the opening of offices in room 414 W. H. Spargeon building, Santa Ana, and the appointment of McElree and King as fiscal agents for the company. Capitalization of the company is for $200,000, divided into 2000 shares of par value each of $100. It is the expectation of Bauman and his associates to finance the company within 90 days and to have a line of boats operating out of the harbor before the opening of the summer season. Negotiations are now being carried on for the purchase of boats. It is proposed to operate 175-ton boats, the vessels being particularly spdy. "Our boats will be equipped with high power black oil burning Diesel engines, insuring speed and low cost of operation," said Capt. G. S. Purney, president of the company, and himself a skipper of many years of experience. "We will engage in down coast transportation to the west coast of Mexico," declared Bauman. "We have secured proposals for enough down coast freight to pay all overhead and cost of operating both ways, and our boats will bring back cargoes of bananas, pineapples and tomatoes, the latter being available there in the winter season. We can buy these products at low figures and sell them at remunerative prices here. The products are now largely shipped from New Orleans, and there is no reason why they should not be shipped from Orange-co harbor. "The same venture on the Atlantic coast has yielded enormous profits for many years and has grown from a small company to a capitalization of $100,000,000, paying good cash dividends as well as stock dividends. There is at present no organization effort in our line of trade on the Pacific coast, only spasmodic trips being made, and successfully." Bananas costing about 45 cents a bunch in Mexico sell around $2.40 a bunch in California. Tomatoes selling around 50 cents a lug crate there sell wholesale for $2.50 to $2.75 a crate in California. Williams, awarding $1116.50 to Townsend and Medbery, local automobile dealers, who sued L. Hemmerling for that amount, based upon a promissory note. The trial was held several weeks ago. Hemmerling had refused payment on the note on the ground that no consideration had been received for it. At the trial, evidence was offered to show that the note had been given to cover allegedly worthless checks issued to the plaintiff by a son of the defendant. EMILY McCOY STILL WAITS FOR PASSAGE NEW YORK, Feb. 3.—Emily McCoy, lineal successor to the chief-tainer of a lonely Pacific island of the cannibalistic Society group, has been exiled—marooned is the better word—in America for 14 years. Educated as a trained nurse, she has cared for the suffering orphans at the New York City nursery and refused the hands and hearts of adventurers sympathizers and millionaires alike. Ten years have flitted by while the British government and shipping concerns in the United States have combed the ports for some ship that might touch at Pitcairn island in the Pacific, where none but British vessels call. The British high commission of the Pacific, she recently learned, has recently made the first visit to that possession since 1879, yet she does not despair of getting back. Because of the years she has lost, she proposes to adopt some name-less wait and to take him back to Pitcairn island, that he may be her successor and break the bond of consanguinity that has existed on the lonely mutineers' island since 1776, when the crew of the British ship Bounty killed their officer and put ashore. November and December saw nearly a half million jobless out of an Italian population roughly considered to be forty millions. Despite the crisis in regard to coal through which Italy has been passing, the metal trades have not suffered as much as pessimists feared. About 80,000 metal workers have been laid off, but that represents about one-sixth of the workmen in this branch. About 108,000 of the unemployed are from the farms and vineyards, and about 43,000 are textile workers. The Venice district, which is not industrial, but agricultural, reports nearly 190,000 out of work. The industrial regions except for Lombardy and Emilia, have not suffered in proportion. The government has tried to avoid CALF HOPS AROUND LIKE RABBIT, CLAIM JEFFERSON, Ga., Feb. 3 — A heifer calf born here has only one eye, no tail and, although air boasts four well-developed feet and legs, hops like a rabbit instead of walking as shefers are generally supposed to walk. Outside of that her owner, George Williamson, says she is a pretty good calf.
